veteran FA contracts are almost always signed expecting that they're going to suck on the back end. If you get value out of them on the front end, you call it a win and you swallow it if the wheels come off.

Springer's contract is nearly guaranteed to suck before it's finished. It won't suddenly make it a bad signing if he delivers for the first few years.
