Was Gausman pitch count to high. Wanted to see him close out the inning. Not good from mayza with a 8-1 lead.

Absolute stupidity taking Gausman out at that point!! Boneheaded unjustifiable managing.

They wanted to turn Santana around because he has far less power hitting right-handed. Decent idea but it didn't pay off.

Take out Gausman after 95 pitches in a 8-1 game when he already got the last two outs after loading the bases. If you left him in for Frazier, you can leave him in for Santana....Some teams are doomed by managers overthinking everything. I'm all for analytics even though I've played the game at a decently high level but this is too much, understand momentum and feel for the game one time....no chart or stat is going to show you that. These goofs would probably never let prime Halladay ever complete a game.

Mayza threw a decent pitch not like he threw it over the middle of the plate. It might have even been a ball if he didn't swing. It was just a great hit.

That said, why on Earth are you taking Gausman out after he grinds those two outs back and had pitched so well all game. Give the guy the opportunity to save himself. Hate that decision the most out of that sequence.

98 pitches at 5.2 is slightly on the high side but he was taken out because Santana missed a homer by an inch off him last time up.

If you separate yourself from the disappointment of it, Gausman was nearing 100 and was already in a self created jam. No guarantee he gets out of it. But Mayza had one job and he couldn't do it.

This.

You can make the right move and it backfires. A move being correct or not and it having a positive outcome or not are entirely separate things and can coexist.

Mayza also had a strong year, but people only remember the failures and therefore he's a gas can.
