How many games will Charlie cost the Jays this year? Can't Zimmer play LF if you wan to give Gurriel a day off in the field? I bet Zimmer makes that catch.

Some of the acquisitions this management group makes are weird.

I still don't get the Tapia one.

I get the attempt. He's theoretically a slap-hitting contact OF with speed.

It just didn't work. I don't fault them for trying, especially if the assumption that he was maybe a fallback plan until a potentially better player in Zimmer came along (and that he was specifically valuable as a means to get away from the Grichuk contract while also getting an interesting prospect in the deal.)

I will fault them for keeping him in a spot where Charlie's going to keep using him in spite of his struggles because he's the new Panik.

Charlie doesn't seem to get that you run good players out there while they're struggling because of the upside. You don't do the same for replacement-level/bench guys.

Matt Chapman deserves runway to sort himself out because he's Matt frigging Chapman. Raimel Tapia doesn't because you can get another Raimel Tapia for a song and try again.

Also, it wouldn't seem as bad if Montoyo didn't overplay him.

Only thing he slaps is the dirt as he drives another ball into it.

He has no plate discipline, an atrocious approach to making contact and doesn't have a lot of pop either.

At first i thought maybe they'd attempt to make mechanical adjustments, but it appears Charlie is content letting him swing like garbage

True. But like you said, the likely hope is that a) he's closer to his 2017-20 version of himself that's a .280s hitter and a wRC+ between 80 and 100 and he's kind of the poor man's Ben Revere or b) they can fiddle with his swing a bit and coax a tiny bit more elevation out of him so he's not restricted to getting hits by beating out the infield D.

and that he's not a trainwreck defensively.

I'd try to sneak him down to Buffalo and give him a couple months against AAA pitching with swing tinkering to figure things out. If he clears waivers great. If not we've got Zimmer to take his job already on the roster.
