Finn McLaughlin is the random player I’m most excited about. I don’t believe he’s grown to be 5-11 though.

I think Jamiro Reber has the highest upside. I would not say its an amazing group but I like it more than the 04 and 05 classes.

I watched the exhibition game yesterday and liked Reber the most too, among forwards.

It was not even a particularly good game from him for his standards. He dominated internationally last year especially with his skating and vision, altough against much weaker competition. I thought he played very well defensively though, yesterday. It was interesting to see them play the czechs. I expected them to play stronger and at least keep the game somewhat close. They had really bad puck luck though and could/should have scored at least two goals, maybe even three. Since this was really the first game against a good opponent for this U17 national team, I expect them to adapt and get better in the coming games. At least I hope they will...

I watched this game and also the U18s games. And it felt like i was watching the same game over and over. Both swiss junior categories managed to match the czechs in skating and stickhandling, but the difference was that the czechs knew how to score. I am gonna repeat myself, but I have no idea why the best 16 year olds in Switzerland play almost exclusively in the U17 league. In the swiss system, you can't produce high-end talent players like that. The kids have potential, but it's simply getting surpressed I feel.

I also didn’t think he had a great game but he clearly showed the most upside on a team that I thought was completely dominated. Sure, they had a couple chances but a 4-0 final score was a much better representation of the game than a 4-2 would have been. Especially the Benak and Kral lines were dominant and I didn’t see anything close to that from Switzerland. I think Switzerland will even have a tough time vs. Germany in Colorado Rapids.

I strongly disagree here too. The Swiss U17 absolutely did not match the Czechs in skating and stickhandling.

I don't know the how the germans progressed since last season but this swiss team dominated the german U16 squad last year in international competition. So it will be interesting to see where the teams stand this year. I also disagree with the take that the 4-0 result was an accurate representation of the game. Sure the Czechs were better in any aspects but "we" still hit the post once and had about 4 or five high danger chances that could have resulted in a goal with more luck/finishing ability.

Swiss prospects are notorious of having bad shots/finishing ability, mostly due to lack of good junior coaches that can teach them the technique when they are young. As far as the leagues they play in I don't know exactly what you mean. I guess you would propose to move them up to the U20 faster? I think the best course of action would be to have a U18 national team that plays in the U20 like Slovakia does it in their program. The issue is that neither the clubs nor the federation is interested in doing that.

Sure, but Czechia also could've scored a couple more goals with more luck/finishing ability. Benak with his between-the-legs shot on a breakaway, Kubiesa who made a D miss with a toe drag and then just missed the net with tons of time and only the goalie ahead of him, and there was more. I thought 4-0 was fine but so would 6-2.

Anyway, I actually didn't see the U16 teams last year but it's quite surprising that Switzerland dominated them. Not sure about the German depth, but Edwin Tropmann, Paul Mayer and Lua Niehus (Swiss-born) are excellent on D and I really like forwards Julius Sumpf and Paul Vinzenz.

Still, I only saw that one game yesterday, so no idea how good Switzerland really is. Looking forward to the next two games and then the tournament next week.

You are talking about 05 born players though, those play for the U18 NT team at this point and not the U17 team...

Ha damn. You're right. Stupid me.

I do like a few of the 06s too, though, especially Hense, Pape, Schams on D. Might not be much worse than Tropmann/Mayer/Niehus. The forwards.... not sure. Will be interesting to see them at the 5 Nations.

EDIT: Nevermind

While I liked some of the guys last year playing for the U16, they did not do that well against Switzerland. It was a rather disappointing effort.

The last two CZE-SUI games were much closer and Switzerland even got a shootout win to wrap up the series. But I was still much more impressed with the Czechs overall, in terms of top-end talent, depth and also tactical aspects. Czechia was much more effective on breakouts and zone entries, with set plays and strong passing, whereas for Switzerland it often came down to individual efforts and luck. Anytime I tried to focus primarily on the Swiss players to get to know them better, I noticed some Czech player instead.

I was dissapointed with the Czech team to be honest, and I didn't have high expectations, given their play/results in the U16 category. The Swiss team played well though, better than I expected and all things considered, deserved to grab the W today, even if only in the shootout.
