Even if he has slowed down some, having Slavin as his partner will cover up for a lot of issues 5v5. Dougie commented on how having Slavin as a partner let him be more aggressive on the ice because he knew Slavin would alway have his back. I suspect we'll see some of that with Burns as well.

Burns was paired primarily with Mario Ferraro (923 minutes) and Jaycob Megna (255 minutes) at 5v5 for most of the season last year. Going to be quite a treat for him to be paired with Slavin this year.

Also, with Slavin, Pesce, Skjei and CDH, he shouldn't have to expend as much time/energy killing penalties for almost 3 min/game like he did last year.

yeah we're setting him up in the perfect position to have success. I honestly think his overall impact on our team's success will be greater than Dougie's and TDA's were. Including his leadership ability and intensity/hyping up teammates come playoff time.

Ive always thought Burns was good but haven't really seen much of him since I dont really follow the west very closely at all... but I kinda wonder if Burns isn't already the player that Dougie Hamilton hopes to become. And I'm a major dougie stan

I haven't watched him all that much either, relative to players in the east, but he seems a touch more mobile than Dougie.

I wouldn't be shocked if Burns has a major renaissance season in Carolina. Not only is he an athletic unicorn that very well could still be in the NHL in his 40s, Slavin is the best partner that Burns has had since Vlasic in his prime, and probably a few degrees better than even him.

That last part is true every year. I really thought he won the Bing because a lot of the voters thought this dude is the best defense in the league, ut does have enough offense to win the Norris

Shutting down the league’s best forwards game after game while only taking a single penalty all season (which was a delay of game, iirc) is damn impressive on its own.

Who wins the jobs on defense has been a point of intrigue all camp, but there are also a few forward spots to be claimed. Don’t be surprised if Stromwall sneaks in and steals one.

5. It’s preseason, so take it with a grain of salt, but Andrei Svechnikov looks like he’s ready to make “the leap.”

He seems bigger and faster than last season, seemingly hasn’t lost one puck battle all preseason, and is just an utter handful for opposing defenders.

It’s easy to forget with Svech.

If you sort the league by points last year, Svech is on the “second page” (not in the top 50). But when you look at the ages of the people above him, no one was younger. Svech was the highest scoring player in the league at his age or below last year.

Also easy to forget because it’s his 5th season and that makes it feel like he should’ve “arrived” by now, but he’s 22. A month and a half younger than Jack Drury.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a full step into stardom this year either.

What decisions are left to make? I guess Drury is pretty much a lock on offence. On defence, there is a battle for 6th and 7th spots. How has Morrow looked in pre-season? I haven't heard anything about him, good or bad.

Morrow isn’t at camp, he’s with his college team.

i would guess Drury isnt a lock to the make the team. I doubt 4LW is up for grabs either but that would be the only other forward spot available.

I thought that might be the case. Do we know why he didn't partake?
be a part of pre-season at school (their first game is this week) and he would have to pay for all of his transportation, housing, etc down here while at camp.

Aho, Svech, Teravainen, Jarvis, Staal, Kotkaniemi, Necas, Fast, Martinook, Kase, Stastny - that's 11 locks. Who is beating Drury for the 12th spot? Pederson? Dzingel? Plus, there will likely be 13 forwards.

Pono has looked strong in and out of the circle (unlikely), Stepan, and Stromwall are all possibilities too.

drury has struggled in the dot the games he has played.

If I had to bet I would say Drury and Stepan are the 12th and 13th forwards but from the most recent reports they're not set yet and it was mentioned Stromwall might steal a slot.

Edit: I forgot Noesen is still in the conversation too.

If Stastny takes the 4C spot I can see Drury starting the season in Chicago, although putting Drury on Staal's LW instead of Kase also makes sense if Stastny is centering the 4th line.

I think I’ve always been a little colder on Drury so this might just be prejudice speaking, but I think there’s been a bit of an inflated narrative around him lately. Dom’s season preview amplified a Corey Pronman comment suggesting he could play middle-six minutes, and I’m sitting there like what the hell are these guys talking about? We’re icing a veteran-heavy team which is making a no-nonsense push for a Cup. If he can make the team, hold the 4C position for the entire season and avoid getting TDL’ed to the pressbox, that will be a phenomenal season for him.
