If Stepan is getting signed, we have 2 cuts to make. Patches will not count as a roster spot yet.

Isn't it 1? They are "officially" at 25 today with Gardiner (who is under contract) and Pacioretty. Once those guys go on IR, they will be at 23 roster spots so would need to cut 1 to fit Stepan, no?

Or are you talking about signing him now before Gardiner and Pacioretty go on IR the first day of the season?

Or am I confused by it all (most likely scenario).

25 players left on the roster, which includes Pacioretty.

Forwards: 14
TT-Aho-Jarvis
Svech-KK-Necas
Kase-Staal-Fast
Martinook, Drury, Stastny, Stepan (PTO), Noesek

Defense: 8
Slavin-Burns
Skjei-Pesce
de Hann-Coghlan
Chatfield-Bear

Andersen
Raanta

Fitzgerald and Suzuki: Injured non-roster. Waiting for them to be healthy to send down.
my guess is Bear gets traded so they can keep Stepan with the team. I believe Noesen has done enough to stick and he provides some of what Nino used to. Can play heavy and cleans up around the net. RBA likely values the veteran presence and experience Stasny and Stepan provide, given you have Jarvis, KK, and Necas in top six. Have to figure out who plays LW on Staal's line. Guessing its Kase with Stastny as the alternate. Once Patches comes back, Noesen or Stepan get sent down. We'll see if my Carnac the Magnificent powers prove accurate.

They are at 25 without Gardiner

I don't see that. I see 25 on the "training camp" roster, WITH Pacioretty AND Stepan who isn't under and NHL contract.

file.pdf

But the official " Under contract" roster is 25 with Pacioretty and Gardiner (but without Stepan).

So I go back to my question. IF when the season starts, the Canes put Pacioretty and Gardiner on LTIR, they are at 23 (without Stepan). So wouldn't that mean they need to trade/send down 1 player to fit him?

EDIT: Or are the rules that if Pacioretty doesn't go on LTIR, he is counted on the roster so you'd need to lose 2 players to fit Stepan?

I don't know all the rules here so asking partly out of ignorance.

These last few moves aren't as obvious as they were for past few seasons if my memory serves me right (which it usually doesn't).

What sticks out to me is that this year it feels like one or two guys who are legitimately good enough to play in the NHL are going to be cut. I feel like we've always gone into the season knowing we had a pretty clear hole in the lineup, last year we were probably a little weak on the 4th line for forwards and knew we really had no margin for error on defense regarding injury. I don't see that being an issue this year.

I disagree with this a bit. Noesen hasn't done anything special in camp and has been notably out-played by Stepan IMO. I'd even say he looked fairly bad out there last night. That's where the last battle is, between Step and Noesen, I believe. Noesen's waiver protection is his two year contract with a high guarantee ($500K).

fair points. Noesen's lack of speed is evident as is Stepan's. If Max P was healthy, one or both of these guys would be in Chicago already (or on his way).

I'm just gonna go ahead and start working to find more evidence that Aho is better than Datsyuk since the masses aren't happy with my username

For me it’s as simple as, Noesen turns 30 in a few months and is super proven to be a quad-A player. This guy was drafted in the same round as Ryan Murphy if that tells us anything about how much untapped potential there is left to discover. It’s great that he scored 48 for Chicago and that he has hung in there through camp, and that elevates him to a level where it makes sense to keep him in mind if we run into deep injury trouble at some point. But making the roster outright, that’s a different story. I might be a little down on Drury, but there are obvious reasons to move him up to the big leagues whereas with Noesen there would need to be something incredibly compelling, like he has been on meth this whole time and finally kicked the habit over the summer. Otherwise he is what he is, and what he is isn’t an NHL-level player.

you guys are all confusing the hell out of me. I'm just gonna go ahead and start working to find more evidence that Aho is better than Datsyuk since the masses aren't happy with my username

Not that I’d ever get engaged in a pedantic HFBoards player comparison. But if I did, I’d be quick to point out that Aho has easily had a better career than Datsyuk to this point in their respective careers. And so if he were to contribute significantly to a Stanley Cup, well, that would be something Datsyuk didn’t do until much later. So that would leave Aho a decade or more to accumulate star seasons and, even if he doesn’t quite hit Datsyuk’s peak, easily pass him in career value.

So Aho > Datsyuk

And good points! But I'm not taking this too seriously, so unless until I do I will hold off on coming in with the big guns

Stepan has looked pretty decent this preseason, but also looked pretty good in the lineup last season when he got a shot, and still would end up as odd man out. Would not be surprised if he isnt signed for whatever reason.
