Leafs would do that easily, no brainer.
Completely unrealistic though.
They would be getting ~3M of cap space and staying in the first round. They also likely can trade Mrazek for another asset if they wanted and save Murray's cap hit completely, unlike with Murray who they're going to have to pay AND retain to get rid of.

Dubas's comment about having a clearer picture within the next 24-48 hours yesterday was very telling. Feels like they are getting Murray. I don't like it at all unless we can somehow get the 7th oa as part of it. i am a huge fan of Savoie. I would much prefer a Fleury Blackwood or Husso tandem. Not sure I can stomach the Leafs going back to the Gareth Sparks days.

If Jiricek is available at 7 I’d be doing whatever I can within reason to get Murray + 7OA on the floor

Strength can be taught... speed to some degree too, of course you are born with certain range of achievable speed. Offensive talent is something you are born with or not as well..... So is IQ. You can teach positioning, reading plays... if someone can learn.

What makes you think Beck has the offensive upside, that warrants a #25 pick? He's a guy I've actually named as someone I'd pick in the second round, if we had a pick in the top half of the second round though. Seriously, sell me on why he has more offensive upside, than he's displayed.. what are we missing there.
Absolutely nothing wrong with a 50 point 2C in 3 years who is a plus 30 and tips ice in your favour when he is on da ice .. he has great speed, he has great strength and he has hockey IQ for playing winning Cup type hockey .. if you want him to win da scoring title well go with someone else (that is wrapped up anywho for next 10 years easy)

Savoie #1 da best
We have da 25th pick not a top 10 pick my friend .. I did not even consider da top end of da 1st round as ZERO chance he gets us us

Lol hilarious stuff. Yeah, they should draft another Freddie the Goat because he’s big strong and can skate. Never mind he has absolutely no mind for the game. Skill & IQ over everything. You can put on meat or work with a kid to have better feet. You can’t teach between the ears, or high end skill
Like Scotty used to say and Joe says today .. NHL speed 1st, NHL size 2nd (Scotty) and NHL hockey IQ 3rd (Joe 2nd) .. when you find those 10-20 guys in each draft then you look to skill and prioritize according to team needs .. but no sense gambling on a highly skilled guy with not much else until later rounds

Thanks for the explanation. If you use the typical NHL e calculators, that are predictors of someone's offense at the NHL level, based upon their minor league stats, he is projected to be a 20 point C at the NHL level.

My question is, and was, what do you see in him, that suggests there is more offensive upside than he's shown so far?

Nobody is trading a top 10 pick to unload a contract, that's simply not happening. That would be horrible asset management.

So they gain 3 million in cap, move sideways in net (at best) and drop 18 places in the draft? Did i miss a step here? Like who would do this?

If this means Jiricek you say yes no questions asked.

Murray + Jiricek vs. Mrazek + 25. Both goalies have same remaining term so the extra cap hit is easily worth it to buy a future 1-3 D anchor on an ELC.
I think there should be some retention also, Murray has $15M in actual cash still owed to him.

$15M in cash for a player in the AHL isn't something Ottawa can afford to do with their internal budgets.

Mrazek has negative value so you aren't moving up from #25 to #7 by adding him.

Perhaps the offer is missing and simply overlooked Sandin from the Leafs side. :)
Murray has HUGE negative value big cap hit and real $$ goes up each of the next 2 seasons too. Also, he hasnt had a decent season in 4 years and cant stay healthy.
Mrazek had ONE rough injury plagued season, and there is no reason to believe he doesnt bounce back ...that said, i hope we deal him.

Da only thing I can add is I am told he was completely misused with Steelheads and played by himself most of time (as he can carry his own line) .. but I don't watch enough OHL games anymore to know .. I leave it up to a few friends who live/scout/coach in league for a living to tell me .. and of 5 guys I know who are still in da league all of them say he will only get faster and better as he plays with more talent .. 1 of them tells me it is possible he could be next Point

The reason it could happen is because Ottawa nearly had a deal with Buffalo for their 16th pick and Ottawa giving up the 7th pick. Murray just wouldn't waive.

The idea came from the actual trade which was Murray retained + 7 + for 15. Essentially we take away the plus, they drop 10 more spots and no retention. Also gives them the ability to trade Mrazek and get out of both contracts.

Thanks, that's the type of information that I was looking for.

I wish to god I could get the American ESPN coverage of the draft. That probably has Bobby Mac and Craig Button covering. I'll have to watch online otherwise I'm stuck with sportsnet and Pierre Mcguire
Seriously, Pierre Maguire is going to be on Sportsnet?!?!?! Sigh

It certainly feels like the kind of draft where a guy we should never have a crack at(25th) falls down due to some uncertainty/doubts within other organizations. I.e He has all the tools but what about his toolbox ? A lot changes between 18 and say 21/22 years of age and other GM's may not be around in 4 years and know it.

That's a difficult trade to consider, the shiny #7 pick would help us down the road, but we would be committing to starting Murray which is a pretty big red flag for me, and you can't just bury that 6 million dollars or use him as a backup that would be like 10 million in net we can't afford.

So what would be the move after? Buy him out? Or truly take the 7th and gamble on Murray in net?

In that case, I think the play is Fleury with Murray as the back up. I'm thinking Dubas has something other planned if it does happen, because spending what 11 million on goalies makes no sense for us.

No way this management team can reasonably gamble on Murray returning to his form from 5 years ago in such an important stage of the team’s development.
