The year before you are drafted is your draft year. Consider that year 0. Then starting adding and subtracting for years before/after.

Knies draft + 1 was this past season. The first year after he was drafted. This coming season will be draft + 2

Literally every competitive team does this, and most of them can't supplant through other means like we can.

And I am not even a personal fan of rentals.

Rentals are fine if you’re actually having success. But let me ask you this. Would you rather have spent the 1st as an all in move this past deadline and actually gotten past Tampa and maybe Florida and New York, or to flush out Mrazek in July?

I think you need to look around the league at what some other teams have done to prioritize cap space and flexibility. Sliding back 13 spots to clear 3.8 x2 isn’t something that creates an unsustainable. It’s what creates long term viability by being creative to carve out flexibility with the cap
