There’s no reason for Karlsson on BUF. They need much more of a defensive presence
The more I think about it, you’re right. It is an offensi defenseman’s heaven though. Maybe theyll take MEV for a 3rd or something

I can’t believe the Sharks have had a Gooch and a Cooch in our history..

My crazy Karlsson idea that I have not fully thought out:

Karlsson to Toronto
Tavares and BOS 1st to SJ

SJ then flips Tavares to DET for NYI 1st, Wallinder, Fabbri, and Copp

Toronto shakes up the core and takes the offensive load off of Rielly who has shown he can’t handle it.

Detroit adds a still very good C who can help ease Kasper in while keeping their early pick.

Sharks pick up a mid first, a late first, and a solid prospect for Karlsson while basically fully getting out of his contract. If they need to retain Tavares is only signed for 2 more years so the retention would be a lot shorter.

Sharks pick up Michkov/Carlsson, Willander/Stenberg, Simashev/Dragecevic, and Musty to refill their prospect pool at the draft.

Toronto lines that matter:
Marner-Matthews-Jarnkrok
Knies-ROR-Nylander

Brodie-Karlsson
Rielly-Liljegren

Detroit lines that matter:
Raymond-Larkin-Perron
Berggren-Tavares-Kubalik
Suter-Kasper-Rasmussen

I believe they have a few prospects coming up that might be able to bump Suter down too.

Sharks lines:
Eklund-Hertl-Zetterlund
Copp-Couture-Barabanov
Fabbri-Sturm-Peterson
Kunin-Lorentz-Labanc

Thrun-Benning
Ferraro-MacDonald
Wallinder-Vlasic

Does Tavares have a NMC?

Here is my ideal semi-realistic offseason plan:
  • Karlsson ($2M/yr retained) to PIT for 2023 1st (14th overall), Granlund, Petry, Pickering
  • Future considerations to LA for Cal Petersen, 2024 2nd, 2025 3rd
  • Future considerations to NYI for Josh Bailey, 2024 2nd
  • Sign Zetterlund 2.5Mx2, Gregor 1.75Mx2, Peterson 0.95Mx1
  • Buy out Labanc
William Eklund - Tomas Hertl - Mikael Granlund
Josh Bailey - Logan Couture - Alexander Barabanov
Noah Gregor - Nico Sturm - Luke Kunin
Oskar Lindblom - Steven Lorentz - Fabian Zetterlund
Jacob Peterson

Marc-Edouard Vlasic - Jeff Petry
Mario Ferraro - Matt Benning
Henry Thrun - Radim Simek
Nikolai Knyzhov - Jacob MacDonald

Taanko Tankonen
Tank Tankersen

Total cap hit is 82.5M including all the dead money. We get 3 1sts in 2023 and 4 2nds in 2024 plus a truly awful roster top to bottom that should be the betting favorite to finish 32nd. Only significant commitments beyond 2024-25 are Hertl, Couture, Vlasic and Ferraro so there’s a path to dramatic improvement in just two seasons if we hit on our high picks the next few drafts.
I have a lot of time for this. I think that’s one of the more fair and reasonable Karlsson proposals out there.

I have to admit, a non-insignificant part of me is mostly interested because I really want to get Zach Benson, and I think 14+36 could get him… but there will be a lot of interesting names available at 14th; Wood and Danielson would be two I’d hope to see available there.

But does Karlsson waive for Pittsburgh? They feel very Sharks-right-before-they-fell-apart to me. I guess if there are no other options, at least he’s got a likelier chance to play playoff hockey with them than with us but still.

I can’t see why detroit would want an aging 1C when they just re-signed Larkin for 8 years.

I feel like Detroit has been looking for a compliment behind Larkin basically since he was drafted. They are very close to being competitive. Tavares will allow them to insulate Kasper until he’s ready. If he’s ready before Tavares’s contract is up, he can play wing.

Who knows. I think that there is appeal to playing with Crosby and Malkin in their twilight years. Pittsburgh’s top end players are still elite, it’s the depth and goaltending that screwed them this year. If they jettison Jeff Carter into the sun, build a competent third line, grab Karlsson and get better goaltending, they’re right back in the playoffs. And once they’re in the playoffs, does anyone really want to go against a team with Crosby, Malkin, Karlsson, and Letang?

Seems like some mighty big ifs with 8 forwards signed, 6 D signed, and 1 goalie.

Seems like an awful lot for John Tavares? Can't see him being moved. We should be all in on William Nylander whom I feel will be the odd man out in TO.

I think it's realistic enough and I would definitely take this off-season

I don’t think it’s that much. Mid first and good prospect for a guy who was still a PPG and who still was a good two way guy.

I'm not sure if he didn't like him but I'm sure he wasn't a fan of Gooch's partying.

Yea Seto's off ice issues had to have been known by at least the Sharks by that point. He was a hard partier in his junior days as well but I think they hoped he would mature.

I think Seto has admitted as much after the fact but he is doing better now from what I hear at least.

I never understood the criticism of trading Setoguchi right after signing him. He was RFA, not UFA. If the Sharks had traded his RFA rights to Minnesota instead, his only options would have been to sign a similar contract with the Wild or wait for an offer sheet that was almost certainly never going to happen.

I think it took some people by surprise that the Sharks would re-sign him, and then trade him a few days later. My guess is that he wasn't initially included in the Burns' trade discussions.

This is a great post. I like all of this, Hodge.

Agree that this is a good deal for Karlsson - I'd be happy with slightly less if the 14th is in there as that's another top prospect in our system.

Again, Zetterlund should not be qualified. If Grier gave him that contract I would really lose all hope.

Sharks have 3 right handed defensemen in the entire organization (not including the reserve players and none of them will be signed) and 1(!!!) right handed NHL forward (not including Zetterlund), with a few more in the AHL being 4th liners at best in the NHL. I wouldn't even consider that NHL forward as being an NHL forward either. Been a problem for years that probably should start being addressed.
