We'll see what happens but I'll be very surprised if they don't grind out a 2-year contract even if it takes until training camp. If Edmonton doesn't want to sign him long term after that he can take them to arbitration and get on the fast track to UFA. Hard to imagine him scoring less than 60 points the next two seasons if he stays healthy. Barrie is gone so all the PP1 minutes and high leverage offensive situations with McDavid & Draisaitl will go to Bouchard. Also if the cap is $90 million then 7-8 becomes closer to second pair money than #1 defenseman money.
But that's where Bouchard would have the leverage on the Oilers. If you're basically opening Bouchard up to PP1 time based on previous production, why would he take less than players in similar situations even if it came to a bridge? If the belief is that he's going to score 60 points the next two seasons based on increased PP time, why wouldn't his agent bring that to the table to up his price or make the case that he shouldn't be taking a bridge and shouldn't? At this point, the Oilers have no alternative to take that spot with similar production.

Because the Oilers have no cap space. While that's not technically Bouchard/his agent's problem...it is if he wants to stay in Edmonton. It shouldn't be this way but until GMs are willing to be aggressive with offer sheets, RFAs without arb rights always get squeezed by teams with cap issues.

Not a perfect comparison but look at the contract Sean Durzi signed with the cap strapped Kings last September after a breakout 40 point season. Bouchard will certainly get more than Durzi on a bridge but probably not that much more.

Ehh I think that comparison is too far off for the situation. Durzi signed it after being an RFA after a rookie 27 point campaign. Bouchard coming off back-to-back 40 point campaigns while also unloading a player ahead of him in the lineup for him puts Bouchard in a much stronger position. Durzi plays a secondary position compared to Bouchard's premium position. I don't see what Edmonton could possibly bring to the table to squeeze Bouchard to a bridge less than 4 mil.

Alright y’all. Tis too quiet. Here’s my plan to pick up more picks this draft and tear down more.

To Seattle: Karlsson 3M retained
To SJ: Driedger, Schultz, 2023 1st, Goyette, conditional 2025 1st (based on playoff performance)

Seattle upgrades Schultz by a lot and doesn’t really sacrifice much.

To Buffalo: Couture
To SJ: Mittelstadt, 2023 2nd

Buffalo gets Couture’s playoff experience.

To NYR: Barabanov
To SJ: Goodrow, 2023 1st

NYR gets an upgrade on Goodrow and clears cap.

To Dallas: Ferraro
To SJ: 2023 2nd

Dallas upgrades on Suter.

Suddenly Sharks have 4 1sts and 3 2nds this draft. Take Carlsson or Smith, Simashev, Stenberg, Sawchyn, Lindstein, Molendyk, and Fisker Molgaard. Suddenly our future is set.

Eklund-Hertl-Zetterlund
Peterson-Mittelstadt-Goodrow
Kaut-Sturm-Labanc
Kunin-Lorentz-Lindblom

Knyzhov-Schultz
Thrun-Benning
Vlasic-MacDonald
Simek

Kahkonen
Driedger

None of this will happen but it’s fun to think about.

Way she goes I suppose. Speaking of Asian hockey, I remember years and years back we signed a Chinese born player to some kind of contract. Maybe it wasn’t for the big club or a tryout or something. I remember it kinda being a big deal and cool to see. I wonder how long until we see an Asian born hockey prospect that ends up breaking into the league. I just saw a highlight the other day of a Japanese player who made a super sick play in international play.
Timely post. Alex Kannok-Leipert just signed with the canucks. He is Thai-Canadian born here in Thailand.

Is there a scenario where Sharks could go for both Laf and Kakko, and what would it take value wise? I know they haven't really exceeded expectations and Quinn is not their best friend probably. But since we are going young, let's go all the way.

I had a scenario with Laf - Hertl/Couture - Kakko or
1st: Eklund - Hertl/Couture - Kakko
2nd: Laf - Bordeleau/2C - Barbie/Gusch/Peterson

I'm not sure how they match play style wise, but bouncing around with couple of scenarios.

As Sharks biased I think I would give them Hertl or Couture as the main 2C of the future, Labanc with 50% retention + something. That would push Trocheck to 3C which would make them crazy deep in center position. I would love to give both Laf and Kakko a solid chance at 1st/2nd line minutes to see what they've got.

Unrealistic but hopefully brings a good conversation. Getting one of them rather than both is more likely though.

Our signing him made a little sense in the context that he was the MVP of the Swedish league in 21-22, but he contributed basically nothing even at the AHL level for us.

By the way, the MVP of the Swedish league this past season? Antti Suomela.

He was very invisible almost always. It's always interesting how players can succeed in Euro roles and can't hack it in even in the AHL sometimes. The well-roundedness you have to have to play NA hockey is something.

I don't know if this is a good response to this post, but it is kinda related to how hard it is to make it to Mestis/HockeyAllsvenskan, Liiga/SHL, AHL/KHL or even to sniff NHL

This is probably a little offtopic and I think there isn't much of a new information for most of us, but it was awesome to me:

I had a long chat yesterday with a former hockey player that is my gf's best friend's boyfriend (now he is also my friend haha)
He never played professionally but had games in Finnish 2nd tier league (Mestis) We had a chat about the difference just from a division to another. It really opened my eyes how much bruises, pain and hard work it takes to even make it in amateur leagues. His role was more of a physical defenseman, with enforcer type of role in most of the games. Had bunch of fights for his team that probably doubled the bruises. It was quite a surprise to hear that teams actually do put some players (him for example) to play even if they had injuries in the lower divisions. Even though he loved the sport, it was best decision for him to retire because the heavy bruises/injuries and he said it was too long of road to actually make it big. But he said it was a lot of fun, there is nothing like team chemistry and getting new friends. Also having a good captain is more important than we realize.
He also admitted not having good hands, but he skated good, had great first pass and could lay some tasty hits. We chatted couple of hours non stop about hockey and it was quite a refreshing, learned a lot about the work behind it.

Ps.
There is nothing like Ice Hockey baby!

The jumps in skill and quality between one level and the other were jarring for me. I went from being Nicklas Lidstrom to Uwe Krupp...

I would prefer not to trade Barabanov together with Karlsson. I think he’s likely to get more as a pending UFA at the 2025 trade deadline. I’d remove Barabanov and Wahlstrom and whatever pick needed to keep it fair personally. Labanc and Gregor trades are fine. As for the Murray trade, the Leafs traded 13th overall to dump one year of Marleau at $6.25M. Though I’m sure they didn’t imagine it to be 13th overall at the time, I think dumping Murray and only moving back from 28th to 36th would be a coup for Toronto. 28th and 36th are practically the same pick.

That seems like a lot from NYI. I think it would really depend where they think they are.

The rest seem fine in value. I don’t love the Yamamoto swap because I don’t like him. I also don’t really like the Murray trade as I’d rather try to move a player there. If either of these were to happen though I’d be totally fine with it.

Not sure if 2025 deadline was a typo but his contract ends in 2024. I do agree about the rest though.
