Forget Karlsson, I'd offer to take Campbell's contract straight up (assuming SJ isn't one of the 10 teams on his no trade list) for a 1st and a 2nd. We need to start getting paid to fill out some of our roster spots.

I'm fully onboard with getting paid to take a goalie from another team to fill out Reimer's spot. I think between Campbell and Murray, there should be a deal out there to be made.

Gotta reach the floor and fill out the team. Time to take on bad 2-3 year contracts during the rebuild. Not gonna need the cap space until 2026+. Who knows, maybe some of the bad contract players get better and they can be offloaded for picks later.

I see no benefit to trading EK without retention. The sharks are not in desperate need of cap space and the point of trading EK is acknowledging they are in a full blown rebuild. Maximum the assets coming back by retaining as much as Hasso will allow (should be 50%) and get the best return possible.

Otherwise keep him to help inflate the value of everyone else.

Definitely agree with this. Karlssons inflation in points and his partners makes him valuable to us. I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping him if we don’t get a great offer. Hopefully if we don’t trade him he can keep making Dillons, Middletons and Megnas (to be traded for picks) and inflate forwards numbers who are then traded for picks.

That said I would be willing to trade him for a late first and a B+ prospect at a 30% retention. Or something along those lines.

Totally disagree with the value on that trade. Karlsson is about to win the Norris and was nominated for the Ted Lindsey. By definition of the award he should have been in the Hart conversation. The only blemishes on the consistency of his career are the covid years, which is also when his wife lost a child and then had a successful delivery, and he had injuries.

If i'm evaluating his value i'm tossing out those down years as anomalies. Trading him for a late first and a B+ prospect with 30% retention is selling low on an asset you can absolutely sell high on

Consider that if the Sharks had traded Karlsson at the deadline, they're likely holding #1 overall.

To write for The Athletic as a Sharks beat writer, do you inherently have to try and piss off the fanbase by being condescending on Twitter? Like is that the first question on the application?

Corey comes off as clueless here. PDB is solid in coin flip games that are a lot of luck. He also is notorious for being a crappy coach that has his teams playing in Game 7’s when they should’ve been closed out way before then (2016 Nashville, 2019 Colorado, and 2019 Vegas).

Corey should ask why he keeps ending up in game 7s

They can "weaponize" the cap space

Y'all can hate Kurz as much as you want but I've been an Athletic sub for a number of years and Corey's insight and access (for lack of a better word) is miles behind what Kurz provided when he covered the team. Been super disappointed with him since he took over

With that said he's not wrong. PDB maybe isn't a good long term coach but he gets teams deep consistently

Horses for courses. I like Corey - I think he's a much better writer.

I truly don’t understand the vitriol for Pete. He got us to the franchise’s only Stanley Cup Finals ever and he’s a pretty solid dude. I have nothing but respect for DeBoer. In completely unrelated news, I am definitely not Dylan DeMelo.

(Seriously, I like Pete and I won’t apologize for that.)
I hated Mclellan and Woodcroft far more than any feeling I had towards Deboer. It was the right time for us to part ways with Deboer though.

I liked PDB and was a pretty big supporter of him. He was one of the few coaches the Sharks have had that I felt improved their playoff chances.

With that said, his defensive system towards his end with the Sharks was terrible. Also, it seemed pretty obvious he had zero interest coaching a bad Sharks team and lacked effort his last season. I’d say the vitriol is somewhat justified, even though he is a good coach.
