Assuming Mackinnon indeed wants $13M on an 8 year deal. For next year we would already have $70M committed on just the following players:

Mack
Mikko
Landy
Nuke
Lehkonen
LOC

Makar
Girard
Manson
Toews
MacDermid

Georgiev
Francouz

So just $13.5M in cap space(Possibly less depending on how the bonuses play out this year) and still 7 Forwards and 3 Dmen to be signed. Including RFAs Newhook, Byram, and Meyers. Simply put the Avs desperately need this rumor from Dater to be completely fabricated and not true.

Yeah. But I mean maybe he changed his mind. :dunno:

Also a very legitimate possibility.
And I'm just saying there's going to be a lot of people eating humble pie if this is wrong. I don't pretend to know which is correct. But I see people routinely trash Dater and his work. Then the second he posts this, you have a bunch of Avs posters treating it with absolute legitimacy. It's like watching a dog chase a car with some here. It's embarrassing. It's easy to see how many Avs fans are no more intelligent than a cocker spaniel.

I was talking more about the Avs re-signings, but yeah I definitely agree.

Ahhh, yeah for sure actually that point makes even more sense. Mack just saw Val, Lehky, Manson all sign for market value where none of them took any sort of discount(Maybe Val took a small one), hell even Cogs, Helm, and the new guy Georgiev got market value if not small overpays...

And now the Avs are gonna be the ones to ask him to take 2-3M less? Yeah I can see how that wouldn't sit well with him.

Barkov is at 10M, and McDavid is at 12.5M, so I'd put MacK at 11-11.5M.

This can't be real though. MacK's not stupid, so he has to know that 13-13.5M will kill us. Landy took a discount, Makar took a discount, and he's a better player than MacK.
Barkov and McDavid are old contracts.

Actually no Avs player took a discount this summer. Also I'd not say that Makar and Landy took discounts either considering the length of their respective contracts which lowered the AAV.

Rants didn't take a discount either. The fact is no one on this team took a discount.

What are the chances Dater has a legit source in either the Avs organization that revoked his press credentials, or with MacKinnon after his last press conference with him?

Also doesn't make sense to leak this from either the Avs or Nate's agent's perspective. It would only hurt negotiations and both sides know that.

It's God damn easy to tell when Dater is speculating or not. Can someone copy and paste what he said exactly? Doesn't have to be the whole thing.

Meh, I'll believe it if it actually happens. If MacKinnon wants to win more Stanley Cups he's no dummy. He knows that he needs to take a discount and probably a fairly hefty one while still getting a sizeable raise on his current 6.3M contract.

If he wants to be the highest paid player in the league, well... sorry Nate, but the Stanley Cup contention is over.

Barkov was like last year it's not an old contract and is actually a good comparison considering Barkov is one of the top younger 1Cs. I know MacK is better than a lot of the comparable contracts just signed but most of those guys have broke 100 pts now and MacK still hasn't 🤷🏼‍♂️. More playing devil's advocate.

Makar didn't take a discount, just like Mack for his current contract.

I can't remember a single time that a player took a discount to play for the Avs. They tried to force it with the Duchene cap, didn't work. This isn't Boston or Tampa.

The reason we have/had so many good contracts was mostly luck, good timing and staying away from expensive UFA's.

My concern with signing Nate to a massive contract is that he hasn’t shown the hockey sense to be a guy that’s still effective when he loses his athletic edge on the competition. That could be something that doesn’t happen until the tail end of the contract (where the Avs will likely have to rebuild) or it could happen much sooner than expected.

IIRC Nate had a conversation with Sakic when Landy's negotiations weren't looking good. Always seemed to me that conversation would involve whether Nate would stay if Landy was let go, which in turn would prompt a conversation about how they could afford Landy with Nate's raise around the corner.

It seems hard to believe that Nate went from being willing to take a discount, and then having that conversation about finding a way to keep Landy, to wanting to be the highest paid player in the NHL. Even after winning a Cup that doesn't make a ton of sense to me.

He could've wanted what Karlsson is making. It's a completely insane contract, but he could've pushed for it, or something close to it.
I mean he signed the 4th most expensive dman at the time of signing coming off his ELC and we only got one UFA year. On an 8 year deal he was clearly in the EK range.

Most underpaid player in the league wants to become the highest paid player in the league? If true, that makes sense to me. That contract he signed, which was fair at the time, has made him miss out on a ridiculous amount of money. I wouldn’t blame him.

I don’t trust Dater whatsoever though.

I mean I don't think he's actively pursuing being the highest paid player in the NHL. I'm sure his ask right now be around there but I'm sure it'll come down from there.

I remember some chatter shortly after the cup win? I can’t recall but they said they knew the number Mack was looking for and since he is not re-signed I’d imagine dater is somewhat close. We’ll see. Mack’s a great player but with that contract we’ll be the oilers :/

The contract he signed was market average and up tell that point Nate had somewhat regressed a bit before breaking out.

Byram is going to get paid. Big time. Newhook and Meyers will probably get raises. I would think the 13.5 mil would get eaten up pretty quickly by those 3 and we will still be 4 forwards and a dman short.

If Mackinnon wants 13.5 mil a year I don't think we have any option but to trade him. I don't think we could even ice a full team if he signs that kind of deal.

But it would be a Juan Soto type deal. 2 star roster players, 2 prospects and picks. Players like Mackinnon just never get traded.

If we want to go all video game:

C- Tim Stutzle (1 RFA)
RW- Drake Batherson (5 × 4.975m)
D- Jake Sanderson (2 RFA)
C- Shane Pinto (1 RFA)
2025- 1st round pick

For

C- Nathan MacKinnon

Then flip Sam Girard and our 2023 1st for a center like Dawson Mercer (2 RFA) and a 2023 2nd from NJ.

Landeskog- Stutzle- Rantanen
Nichushkin- Mercer- Batherson
Lehkonen- Compher- Newhook
Meyers- Pinto- O'Connor
Cogliano/Helm

Byram - Makar
Toews - Manson
Sanderson - EJ
MacDermid

$9.1 mil in cap space

I don't even think Makar necessarily took a discount either. It's certainly turned into one though.

He certainly did. He finished 9th in Norris voting as a rookie and was an injury away from winning it in his second season. He had like 31 playoff points in 35 playoff games. His numbers were absolutely absurd and basically compared to no defensemen in recent memory. Even EK had normal seasons in the NHL before his deal and Doughty regressed abit in his 3rd season. Makar could have pushed for something absolutely crazy if he wanted it too.

I think people just need to come to terms with the fact that Girard/Toews aren't here long term. If Sakic/C-Mac hits a home run with the returns we'll be fine. If they miss we'll be in trouble. The future of this d-core will be Byram/Makar playing huge minutes. Hoping Manson, Behrens, trades etc. can pick up the slack. If someone like Toews is here long term than it'll be Rants or a forward getting shipped out.
