I mean what's the other option?
If you're serious: try to trade him for a younger 1C on a cheaper contract. Either directly or indirectly. Is Barzal available for the right return?

If Mack is asking for 13M+ I'd consider it. That's enough AAV for a 1C and a 2C.

Trying to win again is more important than rewarding players for what they have done like Chicago and LAK did after their cups.

Mack should return enough assets to turn around and trade those assets for a 1C and a 2C.

Craziness, yet I kinda agree that the team would be stronger with the money split between two centers. We still have some absolute elite talent in the team. Thing is, are those centers going to be on the market?

I still want MacK signed of course. I was right that his high number was 13M. That's full UFA price.

Not overly surprising. Mack at $13M, is still a "discount" as well.

He could easily get $15M on the open market if it went that way. He'll reset the UFA market just as the hard cap starts to lift and big paydays for players really start to come out.

IMO $13M will sink this teams chances, but what else can you do really? Can you really trade him?

EDIT: Didn't see it was a Dater article... Hardly any legitimacy to it... But I dont think people should be surprised if a 8x13M deal is what we end up seeing. And then Matthews/Draisaitl will follow with 8x13M next summer before McDavid eclipses everyone again with a 8x14M sort of deal.

I'm more worried about finding a team willing to pay full price for Mack.

This isn't a case of Matthew Tkachuk who wanted to get out and facilitated a trade, it would be tough to do a sign and trade deal with Mack to get full value. Then find a team that can afford him.

I do hope people can see a little of what myself and Henchy and a couple others have been talking about recently though if Mack does end up getting $13M.

The reality of that situation is actually even worse then what we'd have thought. You almost certainly have to go into a small re-tool after this season if that's what Mack ends up getting. You're losing 3 good players to fit him under the cap next year essentially.

I mean you're losing that trade 99/100.

Right right because one of the greatest playoff performers in history and our franchise center is only worth, what, like 10mill? 10.2?
He’s worth more than that.

A team letting their franchise player go after a Cup win would be unprecedented in the cap era, no?
Makar is our franchise player. He’s the best player on this team.

Lots of strong opinions about MacKinnon already. And this is based off of what is most likely pure speculation from Dater (who the majority here routinely trash).

What’s so hard about wait and see? Not everyone has to be like Pierce.

I wouldn’t pay MacKinnon 12.5+. I even struggle to get to 12.

If you go that high, you really have to move Rantanen, or Landeskog soon.

MacKinnon is one of the all-time great players to ever wear an Avs sweater. If the cap was irrelevant, I’d have no interest in seeing him ever leave. But, you have to think about how you build a competitive team and whether, or not MacKinnon is worth McDavid money.

That being said, all these other dudes that are not even close to MacKinnon’s level are re-signing for high value this off-season. Pretty much all of them got market value. It’s kind of annoying that it has to be MacKinnon that needs to take less.

Pretty much. If you're Mackinnon, and you just saw Huberdeau get $10.5M.... There's no way you're accepting under $12M at that point.

I disagree. It's not only the hockey trade, it's the cap space and what you do with it.
Are the assets you get really more valuable than Mack? I'd have to see the offers we'd get for him, but trading Mack would be.... a real issue I think for the future of this team.

Cant recall exactly what was said, but didnt mack say in an interview a year or 2 ago something bout taking less money/team friendly deal?
