Assuming the core is Mack, Makar, Landy, Rants and (possibly) Byram, I'm not even sure we'll be able to keep Rants long term. This very well could be his last contract with us, especially if he wants 11M+.

Avs will have tough decisions to make. Keep the elite winger or get two middle-of-the-road top 6ers for the same cap hit. Depth is so friggin' important.

We've basically lost an entire expansion team in 2 years.

Burakovsky- Kadri- Saad
Namestnikov- Jost- Donskoi
Nieto- Sturm- Aube Kubel
Bellmare

Graves - Barron
Zadorov - Cole
Timmins - JJ
Helleson

Kuemper
Grubauer

1 X 1st
4 X 2nds
3 X 3rds

And gained a Stanley Cup

The elite winger for sure.

Colorado would be so much worse right now if instead of Rantanen ($9.25M) they had Mason Marchment and Nino Niederreiter (signed for a combined $9.5M AAV this off-season).

As long as MacKinnon is re-signed and something reasonably decent happens at 2C, the Avs will be fine. The bottom-6 is going to look shaky unless they can hit on some draft picks though. If they can't they'll continue to harvest picks to add depth at the trade deadline.

This guy forgot how to play hockey they minute after he signed that 6X6 deal with Nashville.

Things went downhill fast after leaving Ottawa. By all accounts he loved it there and had deep connections in the community. Goes to show money aint the end all be all sometimes....but most of the time gimme the loot gimme the loot.

Good point too. We have been very loyal to EJ. It's harsh business in the end. When you stop performing, you need to be replaced.. Teams can't have cap anchors taking down the team. Especially if you want to be a top team.

EJ has value to the team beyond on ice statistics. Punchy McFacePunch shows that a team needs all kinds of roles.

As a friend reminded me, the salary cap is designed to prevent dynasties and so far that has been true. The Avalanche could repeat and they should be very competitive for a while but I think the best part of their story is the worse-to-first in 5 years and the remarkable job the front office and coaches did in building a winner. The reward has come and hopefully it won't be the last but guys like Kadri and Burky, etc. not fitting under the cap is how it is supposed to work.

Grubauer stole Game 2 and nearly stole Game 3 until he broke in the 3rd period and the rest of the series. That Nick Holden goal in Game 6....
There were many reasons why we lost that series against Vegas but I still strongly believe that goaltending was the main culprit. I believe that with .905 SV% or better in those last three games the Avs win the series. And nobody will ever be able to convince me otherwise.

Crazy part is that the Holden goal wouldn’t make the top 3 worst goals given up by Kuemper these playoffs.
While he certainly wasn't great the whole time I don't recall many awful goals. The one in OT against the Blues would be one. There were certainly others he probably could/should have stopped but I don't recall any that were like what the hell. And when push came to shove at the end the last two games we won in Tampa he held them to 3 goals in 2 games, with one being OT. Both on the road

Im going to miss Darcy Kuemper only because we have an even worse goalie now in Georgiev. The Avs are going to be goalie shopping before January.

Ruutu and Hedman come to mind. And probably half the goals in game 3 against Tampa.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that he will be worse than Darcy was this playoffs, because Kuemper was like one of the all time horrible goaltenders these playoffs.

But go on, instead of saying how bad Georgiev is, give us options.

Really Kuemper was Miska like 😰 during the playoffs, I was so terrified on every shot ! I still can’t believe how this team had to play at such a high Level just to cut the chances against

It is clearly expensive to move money right now... Lou couldn't/wouldn't. Monahan cost a 1st despite having only 1 more year left on a team that could absorb it.

I am curious on Monahan. If he can get healthy and even recover to slightly better than 19-20 form... he's a 2nd line center. If he plays like he did the last two, he may not even make the lineup routinely. It is interesting how quickly he regressed.

No options. We live with this for this season. Look to trade Georgiev next year, get a better goalie and make another run. For now keep that 1st for Bedard.

Best goalie this team has seen. 4 losses only. Not even Patrick Roy did that. Roy blew a 3-1 lead in 98 to the Oilers. #NotMyGoat

Well... know you've jinxed it. George can legitimately be worse than Kuemper was in the postseason... he has that ability!

Right. So basically confirms that the Islanders were never, ever in it. Like I said earlier. Not only did they not want to move money out, they didn't want to go to Nazem's preferred term.

Lou never had this in the bag. He never even got close to opening the damn bag.
Sounds like Kadri held out hope he could return until he couldnt wait anymore and chose the next cup champs in Calgary.

Did that regression happen because of an injury or what. I admit I stopped paying attention to him when it was clear Mackinnon was the better player.
