The contract won't age well, but he should be serviceable for another 2 years, after which you simply pay the price to move him.
That’s what I’d do with it for sure… we haven’t seen the Avs go down the path of trading futures to get rid of a guy yet. So a bit hard to say they’d actually do that… and if they’ll even have the futures to do so…

Avs and Flames are pretty much ranked #1 and #2 best defenses in the league. I think we’re slightly ahead personally.

They are deeper upfront and much deeper at center. I think their forward group as a whole is slighly ahead of ours.

In net it’s not close at the moment.

So yeah…

Slightly? Avs have the best D in history right now

You rating Kadri as a 80+ point Center in Calgary? Cause I’m certainly not. The Center position will be addressed lol. Avs are better than Calgary. A D core that doesn’t have a clear cut pp quarterback doesn’t compete with ours. Flames are no different than they were last year.

I take our forward group over there's any day of the week. x 10 for the defense, they have a good D group but still nothing compared to ours.

You’re casually ignoring 3 middle 6 forwards who are very, very good players too…

Flames have arguably the best center rotation in the league now.

I hope so, he's the best 2C available at this point.

Newhook + Olausson + 1st for Miller(50% retained) + Hoglander

Landy - Mack - Nuke
Lehky - JTM - Mikko
JTC - Meyers - Hoglander
Cogs - Helm - LOC
Sedlak

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Byram - EJ
Hunt - MacDermid

George/Frank

450k leftover to bank for whatever move is needed at the deadline. Besides the unknown of goaltending, that would be a very deep lineup up and down on both Offense and Defense. The only possible area that would maybe need a deadline upgrade would be the 3C spot, depending on what happens with Meyers/JTC.

No chance I'm trading our top two forward prospects for a rental we won't be able to afford after his deal is up. We will need those cheap ELCs to compete

In theory the Flames plugged the holes created by the departures of Gaudreau and MT but how are Hubbie and Naz going to fit in CGY is a question. Let's wait and see if they are as good as last year.

On our end we have stability and a team that is fully gelled. We are still on top baby.

Newhook and OO will have zero bearing on whether we will compete. Having no #2C will prevent us from winning the cup.

We’ve lost Bura and Kadri. Are we better than CGY on paper?

Forward, defense, goaltending?

Colorado is better for sure.

Calgary has a great defense on paper, but the high end doesn't begin to touch Colorado's thanks to Makar; yet the Avalanche still have great depth.

Up front, even with Compher in the mix, I'm taking Colorado's top-6 over Calgary; pretty easily to be honest. The Flames third line with Backlund is obviously way better though.

There's no need to comment on the goaltending, we know who's better there... Georgiev :wg:

Assuming they make a few deep runs, I give the Flames a ton of credit. You can't always draft superstars and sometimes fate deals you a bad hand. Considering all that's gone down, Calgary seemingly has one of the best teams in the West, and it has largely been accomplished via trades and free agency.

If they're lucky, they'll be the next 2019 St. Louis Blues.

I have more faith in how the Flames rebuilt their team than how Holland has the Oilers constructed going into next season.

And have the cupboards completely bare after this year?

We are still on paper a top 3 team in the league. Get to the trade deadline and add a 2C if we need.

Unless we get a guy like Dvorak or Bennett for cheap.

Plus Sutter is 100x the coach than what's his face in EDM.

Their defensive play and goaltending is something EDM can only dream of.

Yeah totally agree with that… Flames are more balanced and stronger down the middle. Overall talent isn’t that much better… but better at key positions. Oilers just took a chance on a starting goalie (that could be enough if McDrai stay healthy through the postseason)

Deadline or now, that is likely the cost for a 2C and you’d be doing well to get 2 seasons of a player for that cost.

f***ing finally, all this crap for a 7x7 deal. Lol.

Good for him, glad he got a pay day.

Know we can focus on the important things like getting 29 signed.

And filling the 2C gap.

Are they worlds apart or are they almost done and finalizing things?

Good thing we have good journalists covering this team to dig into this and find out why he isn't signed yet even though Sakic said at the draft that he was a priority and was hoping to get it done quickly this summer.

Still crossing my fingers for Horvat (with extension) for a Newhook package. Either now or at the deadline. The Vegas series showed us the Avs aren't winning shit without two true top six centers.
I don't see Horvat leaving, he's their Landeskog.

I think Miller and even EP are more likely to leave.

No way I would have given Kadri that deal. He had a career year last season but let's not forget he was pretty brutal the year before even before he got suspended.
I love Naz, but imo it was a bit of a gamble to give him that contract, too. I’m glad someone else took it

I don't think it's far off. I think Kadri was holding it up. We'll see something reasonably soon. At least that's what my gut tells me.

Here are the conditions associated with the first-round selection acquired by Montreal:

In the event Calgary's own 2024 first (1st) round choice is selection 20-32 (inclusive) (following the determination of the 2024 NHL Draft lottery results), then Montreal shall have the option, exercisable until 48 hours prior to the start of the 2024 NHL draft, to exchange the conditional 2025 or 2026 first round choice to become Calgary's own 2024 first (1st) round choice); or,

If Florida's 2025 First (1st) Round Choice Transfers to Calgary (pursuant to the conditions on an earlier trade)

2. In the event the conditions to trigger Montreal's option as noted in #1 above does not occur, or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail:

  • B) If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is a top-10 selection and Florida's 2025 first round selection (previously acquired by Calgary) is outside of the top-10 selections (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice).
If Florida's 2025 First Round Choice DOES NOT Transfer to Calgary (pursuant to the conditions on an earlier trade)

3. In the event the conditions to trigger Montreal's option as noted in #1 above does not occur, or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail:

A. If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice, and additionally,

  • 1) If Florida's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results); and,
  • 2) Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice has been transferred to another NHL Club; and,
  • 3) Florida's 2025 first round draft position is better than Calgary's 2025 first round draft position; then Calgary will transfer their own 2025 fourth round choice to Montreal.

  • 1) In the event Calgary's 2025 first (1st) round choice is the first (1st) selection overall in the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Calgary will retain its own 2025 first (1st) round choice and Montreal shall instead receive Calgary's own 2025 third (3rd) round choice and a conditional 2026 first (1st) round choice. Montreal shall receive the better of Calgary's 2026 first (1st) round choice or Florida's 2026 first (1st) round choice (following the determination of the 2026 NHL Draft lottery results) (previously conditionally acquired by Calgary).
