The Lehigh Valley Phantoms and Philadelphia Flyers have announced the following transaction:

Adam Karashik (D) has signed an AHL contract for the 2022-23 season and a PTO for the remainder of the 2021-22 season

Karashik, 24, was captain at Notre Dame as a fifth-year senior in the 2021-22 season following four years at the University of Connecticut. He is the third collegiate player this week to join the Phantoms on a PTO joining Will Riedell (D) of Ohio State and Darion Hanson (G) of UConn. Karashik score one goal with 15 assists in 40 games for the Irish helping lead the team to the NCAA tournament and an appearance in the regional final.

Karashik played in 159 games in his NCAA career scoring 6-34-40. The Ridgefield, CT native with a righty shot was second in Hockey East with 53 blocked shots in 2019-20. The 6’0″ blueliner also won a Clark Cup with the Chicago Steel in the USHL in 2017.

UND's pair of fifth-year seniors will soon sign their first professional contracts and begin the next phase of their careers.

Connor Ford, a center, will sign an American Hockey League contract with the Henderson Silver Knights, the top minor-league affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. Ford will report to the Silver Knights immediately and will be under contract next season, too.

The Providence Bruins announced today, April 1, that the team has signed forward Joseph Abate to a one-year American Hockey League contract for the 2022-23 season.

Abate, 23, has played in 85 career games with University of Nebraska-Omaha, scoring 12 goals and adding 20 assists for 32 points. A native of Bloomingdale, Illinois, Abate joined the Mavericks after skating in the United States Hockey League with the Youngstown Phantoms, Omaha Lancers, and Bloomington Thunder. He appeared in 105 career USHL games, scoring 16 goals and adding 31 assists for 47 points.

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed college free agent forward Marc Gatcomb to a one-year AHL contract for the 2022-23 season. Gatcomb has also been signed to a professional try out agreement for the remainder of the 2021-22 AHL season.

Gatcomb, 22, completed his senior collegiate season with the University of Connecticut (Hockey East), ranking fourth on the team with a career-high 21 points. Over four NCAA seasons with UConn, the 6-2, 194-pound winger recorded 46 points (22 goals, 24 assists) and 50 penalty minutes over 124 games.

The Regina Pats Hockey Club is extremely pleased to announce that captain Logan Nijhoff has signed a two-year American Hockey League contract with the San Diego Gulls, the affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks.

Nijhoff, 20, is in his fifth and final season with the Pats, and has produced 43 points (20G-23A) in 52 games, his most productive year yet. He ranks fifth in the WHL in face-off win percentage at 58.3% and fifth in face-off wins with 741 this season. The Comox Valley, B.C. native is serving his second season as captain of the Pats.

The Detroit Red Wings, needing some help in net for the Grand Rapids Griffins, today signed veteran KHL and AHL goaltender Magnus Hellberg for the remainder of the season.

Calvin Pickard, the Griffins’ No. 1 goalie, was injured during a relief stint in the Red Wings’ 11-2 loss at Pittsburgh on March 27 and hasn’t returned.

Hellberg, 31, spent this past season with Sochi HC of the Kontinental Hockey League, posting a 13-20-4 record, 2.42 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and five shutouts in 37 games.

Hellberg (6-6, 209) was drafted in the second round by Nashville in 2011 (38th overall) but has appeared in only four NHL games (1-0-0, 2.70 GAA, .868 save percentage).

He has played for three KHL clubs in the past five seasons (Kunlun Red Star, St. Petersburg SKA and Sochi), recording an 81-64-14 record in 169 appearances.

The native of Uppsala, Sweden, also represented his country at the 2022 Olympics, appearing in two games and posting a 1-0-1 record, along with a 2.46 GAA and 0.933 save percentage.

Hellberg has appeared in 187 AHL games with Milwaukee and Hartford, posting an 84-71-28 record, 2.49 GAA and .914 save percentage.

The Griffins, in Pickard’s absence, have been leaning on Victor Brattstrom, who has struggled in his first season in North America (7-14-3. 3.43 GAA, .893 save percentage).

Matthew Wedman (Belleville) leads the way with 70 regular season and 1 playoff game. Logically, he should have signed a SPC but nothing was ever announced in that sense.
