At What number does it make sense to bring Naz back? I’m definitely leery of paying him after his career year in a contract season, and especially given the fact he’ll be 32.

But with our window being what it is, I’m ok giving him the extra 1-2 years to keep him if he’d agree to a serious hometown discount (say $6-6.5m for 5 years?).

It’s probably unlikely for both sides, but something we shouldn’t automatically discount.

I don’t imagine Naz taking a discount. He already went through basically his entire career at a discount and he seems like the type of dude who’s going to cash in over try to win. Which is totally fine and I don’t blame him, but that won’t happen here

Has JJ passed EJ on the depth chart or does he prefer to shuffle him up with Makar because he's a LD? Especially since Toews has struggled a little lately.

Bednar keeps trying to play EJ on his off side this year, but it's not really something he looks comfortable doing IMO. His reads and timing of when to be aggressive defensively are worse on the left side.

I definitely think he has. Since 3/15 (last 10 games), Jack's playing almost 3 minutes more per night (18:36) than EJ (15:48), despite nearly identical PK time.

Like you said, a lot of that has to do with JJ playing up with Makar, but that reinforces the point. I don't think Bednar will take JJ out of the line-up when he's comfortable with him playing up on the top pair.

I'm sure Bednar is going to get screwed out of the Jack Adams, but JJ is exhibit A on why he should win it. Colorado were way thinner heading into this season, but he's getting really good performances out of the fringe veterans in the line-up. Even Darren Helm has turned his season around the last ~15 games.

Agreed. As I said it’s probably unlikely. But from Naz’s perspective when looking at the full contract amounts, he may prefer a $6.5m x 5 years ($33m total) with a winning, cup contending team, over a $7.5m x 4-5 years ($30-$37m) with a bottom feeder.

When you’re making $30m+, quality of life is probably more important than an extra $3-5m in the long run. If he wants, he can call up Gru and ask how much fun he’s having in Seattle lol.

I mean I’m sure Philly would give him ~7 over 6 or 7 years. They’re gearing up to do something really stupid this off-season.

It’s honestly comical at this point. They’ll just keep throwing big money at the wrong guys with 0 actual plan and a dream to be a bubble team forever. They’ve basically become the dolphins of the NHL.

Naz said that he worked hard for his next contract...he's not taking a discount.
I wouldn’t expect him to either. It’s his last chance to land a big contract, and he should get what he can.

Unfortunately it takes the Avs out of the running, but that trade was still a huge success.

It will be interesting to see the vision for the second line in the offseason. Since Cs are so costly to acquire, I half wonder if they'll go for the 3rd linish types of Cs and target a W (Forsberg for example). This would also leave the possibility for Newhook to step into that role.

One viable option would be to upgrade the bottom 6. That kind of a makeover would likely require jettisoning Compher, which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

There are some interesting options out there. I'd seriously look into Nick Schmaltz, obviously not an ideal option but he's locked in at a good number and has surpassed 20 goals and has 49 points with a handful of games to go playing on an absolutely atrocious Coyotes team. It'll cost a good future or two, but probably worth it.

A MUCH less enticing option would be to snag the guy the Hawks dealt Schmaltz for, Dylan Strome via FA, but...ugh, I don't like that guy's game at all. I think Chicago's going to keep him anyway.

Filip Forsberg will likely be staying in Nashville, unfortunately. Avs can't afford him regardless.

He'll be amazing as an analyst in the broadcast booth. The more guys like him and the less guys like Tyson Nash, the better.
Speaking of Nash, heard an interview with Antoine Roussel the other day and he confirmed that what Nash was saying was true. Yote players were actually mad at Zegras, which led to the beating.

Yep. Hockey culture is a rancid cesspool.

McDavid got a broken clavicle for making guys look like fools.
Crosby got a career altering concussion.

Tough titty Troy terry suck it up

I mean the only one of their prospects in a long time that seems to be panning out is Farabee - sounds like Provorov, Konecny, Frost, even Hart, etc., have all stalled in their development, and there's no real top end talent there on offense or defense

I'm curious to see how the Flyboys fare in the draft. They've always had a rep of drafting relatively well, but this last rebuild obviously didn't yield desired results.

Fletcher brought his boy (Prawn or whatever his name is) with him, the same guy who thought it was a good idea to draft Filip Johansson in the first round in 2018--they're already on record as saying they'll just take the compensatory pick on that guy. That pick was universally lambasted when it was made. And yet that is the dude who will be running Flyers drafts for the foreseeable future. Wonder who wins in the battle between Flyers amateur scouting and the Fletcher Brain Trust.

The issue is they just keep throwing good money after bad. They traded their first last year for Risto (big lol there), but besides drafting Nolan Patrick at 2oa who didn’t pan out b/c of concussion issues (that one’s just bad luck and not on them), they haven’t drafted in the top 10 since 2011. You can only get away with that for so long.
