True. I was thinking more like regression from their players not off-season moves. Only time will tell. they certainly have been fortunate with their goaltending.(I don’t mean luck but going from Hank to Igor is pretty fortunate to not have to worry about the position)

Absolutely, and in many ways Hank covered for a very mediocre management group. They made all kinds of terrible mistakes and it didn't matter because Hank was so amazing and bailed that team out on the regular. Drury has that safety net now, hopefully for Rangers fans he doesn't squander it like Slats did with Hank.

To me, Roy and Sakic seemed to have a fundamental misunderstanding as to why they were successful, handed out bad contracts, made a horrible trade, and then doubled down by making what ended up being a terrible free agent signing. Drury might make some of those mistakes, but I don't think he'll make all of them. We'll see...to me the Copp acquisition was addressing a fundamental need while also telling Ryan Strome that he might want to think twice if he's planning on asking for the moon this offseason.

I don't want to lay all the blame on Roy's laps because Sakic was at fault as well but to me it seems like they came into the job on the same page and diverged after that "lucky" season. I think they both came in wanting to be patient with building the team but that first season blinded Roy on where the team stood. I think he thought they were closer then they were in reality and he convinced Sakic from there. Sakic's mistake was to believe him or not stand his ground.

Stolen from the main board thread. I didn’t know how bad he had been the last few years. I think we should stay clear and stick with Kuemper.

Maybe I’m biased, but the current stretch (Especially with Bo back) is clearly showing how the team might very well thrive without Girard. This summer Joe needs to include him in a “hockey trade” for a 2C with term

Yea JJ finished 3rd in minutes played. He may have passed EJ in the depth chart. Bednar trusts him a lot.

I also think that other teams will notice and it's going to cost more than 800k to bring him back next year.

Has JJ passed EJ on the depth chart or does he prefer to shuffle him up with Makar because he's a LD? Especially since Toews has struggled a little lately.

Bednar keeps trying to play EJ on his off side this year, but it's not really something he looks comfortable doing IMO. His reads and timing of when to be aggressive defensively are worse on the left side.

Yeah he’s been on that side a lot more lately and I don’t think he likes it either. He’s ending up there a LOT on the PK and I wonder if that’s by design. He can get more sticks in lanes and possibly clear it a little easier, but it also puts him at a disadvantage when he has to try and battle for it on the boards and clear it. Either way I don’t love him on the left side.

My theory was that Bednar/Pratt wanted their D men on their off side to clear rebounds easier on their forehand. Possibly because Kuemper has had issues with rebounds this year, and seeing pucks through traffic. Both of which happen often on the PK.

They intentionally did it though, because they didn't need to with Toews-EJ, which was their top PK pair for most of the season. After that they went with Toews-Makar as the top PK pair, but they still had them both on their off side at times.

Haven't looked recently to see if they're still doing it, but I'm not a fan of it. Esepcially with EJ.

They've even had him play a fair bit on the left side 5 on 5 too. Some guys can play on their off side like Toews and G, but EJ's never really been one of those guys. I think the only other time they've really tried it was briefly with Barrie, and it didn't work very well then either.

JJ fits this system well and deserves that ice-time, he's been solid the past ~10-20 games. It's too bad he was taken advantage financially because he's definitely going to be chasing the paycheck and I don't blame him, but usually guys his age are happy to chase a cup and sign cheap deals with contenders.
