What if they just resigned Nazem Kadri? Is that completely off the table?

I dont think so. But he will have to take a discount to stay.

I think he gets 7.5M, maybe even 8M if he chases the money, I don't think the Avs will.be able to go above 6, maybe 6.5M.

But on a 3-4 year deal I'd take him back at 6M I think.

How about a solid, give EJ a front office job to retire. Sure he leaves money on the table but it could give him 10 more years plus with the team. I know its a stretch and probably impractical but would be great to keep all the others if this could happen.

$6m is going rate for starters… Campbell is in the range.

Taxes are complicated and those basic calculators are far from accurate.

Only 8 goalies make $6M though (a couple others sniff that number; Grubauer at $5.9 and Quick at $5.8).

I think Campbell is a fine goalie, but he doesn't have much of a track record and had a down second half. Does someone really give him the Markstrom contract?

Realistically they can’t fit all of EJ, Lehk, Nuke and Kadri on the team. Somebody has to go. The answer should be EJ, but I really doubt the Avs do that.
We pretty much all know that Kadri and Bura are 100% gone while Nuke, EJ and Lehkonen are staying.

Manson and Kuemper are likely gone too.

Lehk will play in the top 6 which means that we'll need only two major pieces: a 2C and a goalie.

All the options suck though.

Varly (lol)
Fleury (nothing left in the tank)
Kuemper @ 6M X many years
Campbell @ 6M X many years
Gibson with horrible numbers @ 6.4M X many years (+ will cost assets to acquire).

Good post.

Very bad situation.

If we win and Kuemper doesn't want crazy contract, he is probably our best shot. We can always probably move him later if something way better comes up though..

Gibson with horrible numbers on Anaheim*

I have no doubts about him being great if he was on the Avs.
I feel like Ana would ask too much for his numbers. I don't see the upside for a huge price.

I think it could but we'd be paying the price down the road, how much is Joe willing to mortgage the future?

So the solution is a young goalie who has yet to prove he's even a starter in the NHL, let alone a franchise goalie? A guy who couldn't even outplay V-Tech Vannacheck!?!?

I get there's no ideal option, them's the breaks. But Samsonov is not the best of those bad options. Not even close. Husso would be a better bet, and I'm not banging the table for HIM, either.

At least we agree the pining for Varly is absolutely ridiculous.
Hey now, HIM is a pretty good band.

The obvious argument is that Samsonov could take steps forward and be a long-term solution, but it's certainly not looking that way right now.

Makar was an RFA (with Avs getting only 2 UFA years) and MacKinnon is an UFA... So no, MacKinnon will get more, pretty easily.
You have an good argument there, but if you want the AVS to stay a contender, you dont pay him 12m as others said he will get.

Dumb. Cale was an RFA. Good luck finding a 1C that good (last time I checked a 1C is pretty important). Also, this stupidity reeks of the Duchene cap and we all know how well that worked our.

I doubt we trade EJ, more likely is he walks next season (lines up with the MacKinnon extension).
Continuing the discussion from the Montreal boards...

Am I out to lunch thinking that EJ would be likely to sign an extension with a severe pay cut? He has been with the Avs for 10 years, about to win the cup. He's made a good amount of money as well. He probably understands his belongs to the bottom pairing or maybe 4th D as an emergency at this point. I don't think it's unreasonable to think he would like to continue playing hockey for the Avs for say 1,5-2m.
