Dudes still basically elite.

Guy still took home the Selke and was nearly PPG. He's a fantastic player still, but more importantly, I think he'd be an amazing mentor for a lot of our players.

Well he just won the Selke by a landslide so I'd say he can still play.

He said several times that he has no intention to play anywhere else though. Boston or retiring.

No no, I know he's still elite defensively and put up points with Boston. My concern is purely in his skating ability at age 36. I know Boston uses a slower, more methodical system than the Avs. Just curious if you think he'd be able to keep up

I’d take a look at Samsonov.
Won’t cost what Gibson will, he’s younger, and has high potential. Looked good in the playoffs too. He hasn’t put it all together but I see the right ingredients.

I don't think it's realistic, but it's the guy I would want. In terms of situation, talent, etc, he's close to the perfect fit IMO. The small margin of hope that we may have is if he decides he does want to play one more year, sees that Boston may be in trouble next year, and decides that he wants to join the franchise that came from his childhood favourite team (Nordiques). He also has a ton of respect for Sakic, so there's this super small chance that it could happen.

Guy like that doesn't have to skate--he just knows where to be at any given time before anyone else. There would be no issue whatsoever with him fitting into the Avs system.

That said, moot point, he ain't coming to Colorado.

Yup, exactly how I see him.

I think 2C is a bigger hole than goalie and should be solved first. You only need average goaltending. Now if you can get a top flight guy, go for it. But beyond Gibson, is anybody else really out there to be had that could be top flight?

So I guess what I'm saying is priority Gibson > Any 2C > any other goalie.
You’ve been banging the Gibson drum here for a while. Given his traditional numbers and underlying analytics aren’t great for the past three years, what do you see in him other than someone who was formerly great? If it’s just the mental fatigue being on a team with no real shot, I’d be concerned about his mental fortitude.

Kuemper (or other FA goalie) costs nothing more than a paycheck. Gibson costs assets and a paycheck.

Yeah, I don't see it either. There are better options.
All the options suck though.

Varly (lol)
Fleury (nothing left in the tank)
Kuemper @ 6M X many years
Campbell @ 6M X many years
Gibson with horrible numbers @ 6.4M X many years (+ will cost assets to acquire).

Honestly think Fleury on a cheap 1 year deal would be just fine. Team has shown we don't need an elite goalie to win.

So the solution is a young goalie who has yet to prove he's even a starter in the NHL, let alone a franchise goalie? A guy who couldn't even outplay V-Tech Vannacheck!?!?

I get there's no ideal option, them's the breaks. But Samsonov is not the best of those bad options. Not even close. Husso would be a better bet, and I'm not banging the table for HIM, either.

At least we agree the pining for Varly is absolutely ridiculous.

It seems like we’re at a low point in the league in terms of quality goaltending - might be correlated to why scoring has shot up this year (cause and effect here is unclear). Who would you say are the great goalies in the league right now?

Vasilevskiy
Shesterkin
Saros
Sorokin
Hellebuyck?

I don’t think that it’s just the FA pool of goalies that’s disappointing. I think we might have to recalibrate what a good or adequate goalie is in the league. Outside of a select few, I see a bunch of otherwise interchangeable names or possible one year wonders.

Colorado is one win away from the cup with really shaky goaltending, so I don't think Sakic needs to overthink it this summer.

The Avalanche are so strong everywhere else and remind me of the late-2000's Red Wings, who had multiple deep playoffs runs (and a cup) with the corpses of Hasek and Osgood in net.

To be fair, Osgood was really good in the playoffs, but he was facing like 20 shots a night. But that's pretty much my point. The Avs just need someone who can sit back there and not allow some terrible matzo ball goal because they haven't faced a shot in 10 minutes.
