His value is that of other top-6 players from previous trades.

Stepan went for a freaking 2nd round pick last deadline. So did Lias Andersson. Mantha went for Vrana, Panin, a 1st + 2nd. Foligno went for a 1st+4th.

Do you not see the difference between those moves?
Stephan at 31, mantha at 26.
Which one do you think 26 year old buchnevich is closer to?
Also if you think stepan is a top 6 player anymore you've stopped watching hockey.

Top 6 players get 1st round picks +, buch got a 2nd and a bottom 6.

I’m assuming those 1st rounders were in the 20s. In a horrible draft. But why do we need to keep trading for futures? A bottom 6 forward who still has RFA years and a 2nd round pick in a good draft seems like similar value no? There does come a point where we need to make trades for the here and now.

i don’t. I just feel like this could be potential a trade that we look back on as one of those we traded for a lesser play but he was the right play for this team

We traded the best home drafted / homegrown forward this franchise has seen in a long time for a bottom 6 LW and an 2nd.

Plenty of cap room this year. We could have resigned him. Maybe dealt him later if necessary?

We dont have room for a LW.

Now we also dont have a first line RW.

Some more shit better come down tonight, in a vacuum this deal is completely senseless.

Kakko and Lafreniere will change this very soon

I can almost guarantee that Lafraniere will move to the RW and the top six to start will be something like

Panarin-Strome/other-Lafraniere
Kreider/Zibanejad/Kakko

it is absolutely not the same value. The bottom 6 player isn't going to magically become a top 6 guy, and the 2nd is worth less than a first.
Its not about trading for "futures" its about value for value. Maybe you get a first, and flip it for a top 6 center.

I would've tried to jettison Kreider to keep Buch. People say we don't win with someone like him but he was a top 6 with some grit. Not like Kreider and Strome who are 1-ply tissue that disintegrates in tough situations. I enjoyed Buch making Marchand his bitch.

Too early to tell. You said think so it's not a fact.

It may blow up in his face but it may turn out to be quite good.

Even if it turns out great that doesn't mean that it was the right deal to make. Atm it seems like quite the underwhelming deal and I don't understand why it needed to be done now if thats the best that they couldve gotten

Lets put it this way. As someone who follows the Sens a ton. The Karlsson trade. Sure it turned out absolutely great for them. But was it the right deal to make at the time? No!

Buch as Rick Middleton? Uh no.

This fanbase loves making good second liners into first line legends.

We shall see. I think Buch has some very good years ahead of him.

To your second point I concur. Like all fanbases, we tend to over rate our players. I'm guilty of that myself.

I think the Buch trade was handled bad so far

but you have to consider hes been shopping Buch for weeks now.. and Buch's next contract is $$$
i'm underwhelmed by the deal. don't understand why we dont get a first back...
but to carry on (not you) like there were better moves that Drury passed up on?
plus this is a salary dump for .. gulp what comes next...

Blais is not a very good hockey player. Buch is coming off a great season. Trading a top-6 winger for a 4th liner and a 2nd is awful no matter how you slice it.

What would have been the cost to acquire Blais? A 3rd? If we wanted him that badly you could have acquired him, or someone like him without sacrificing Buch. And I get we had to move Buch. All I’m saying is Drury got shit value for him.

My list, for posterity.

Beniers
Power
Eklund
Hughes - I think NJD does it
Guenther

Clarke
Edvinsson
Johnson
Wallstedt - Could go anywhere 5-15
MacTavish - Would LOVE to move up 5 spots for him.

Lucius
Sillinger
Lysell
Svechkov
Raty - I would take anyone in this range besides Lysell and call it a day.

Cossa - Could go anywhere 10-25
Coronato
Lambos
Stankoven
Bourgault

Bolduc
Chibrikov
Ceulemans
Robertsson
Olausson

Pinelli - Underrated pickup.
Rosen
Othmann
L'Heureux - I think he makes the show and it's gonna suck playing against him for a long time.
