After one year of hockey, who do you think would be picked 1 to 5 in last year's draft.

I think it's a good time to ask the question now since NCAA season is coming to an end and most of the top 5 are playing in the NCAA.

I think Power, Hughes, Beniers and McTavish could all have a case.

What do you say ?

Power
McTavish
Beniers
Sillinger
Zellweger
Edvinsson
Hughes
Elkund
Kent Johnson
Wyatt Johnson

1. Edvinsson
2. Power
3. McTavish

4. Sillinger
5. Johnson
6. Hughes
7. Beniers
8. W. Johnston
9. Eklund
10. Coronato/Wallstedt

I'm curious how Michigan fans compare Johnson, Hughes, and Beniers. I don't really have much difference between them, I'm just tie-breaking based on upside.

Dud of a draft. McTavish I like a lot and would take him #1, Power tracking fairly well, Beniers is pretty safe to be a real solid player, Luke Hughes should bring a comparable impact as Quinn does. Not too much to really be excited about after that.

Edvinsson looks amazing, and Johnston is tearing up the OHL...

I don’t think he has massively outperformed expectations like the players I listed.
Has preformed similarly to a guys like Josh Doan, Carter Mazur and Sean Behrens who were taken in the same range Knies was but I wouldn’t say those guys are “Big Risers”
Josh Doan and Carter Mazur were overagers and in Josh Doan's case he's playing in a significantly worse NCAA division. Behrens should have probably made your list too. Knies is around ppg in the best (?) NCAA division, was a standout on the US world juniors team and played well in the Olympics. Lots of smoke around him signing his ELC and getting into NHL games as soon as his season is done too. He's had an unreal D+1 year for a late second rounder.

I know he is an HF darling, but I am not so high on Edvinsson as most people are. He's huge obviously and skates well so should be a good shutdown type, but I do not love how he processes the game to be that #1. Just my opinion. I have only seen him play under18s and wjc so my conviction is not super high on this one but that's how I see it.

Johnston does look good and is very talented. I thought about mentioning him as a 5th. He's got a 1b center upside IMO, but has a ways to go to get there. He is an impressive prospect though I agree.

So Guenther just decided to bide his time and not play that well in Edmonton this year? He's not bad but he's getting outplayed by a lot of these guys.
Hmm? He played 2 games and had 2 assists. Don't think he played bad at all. Made some good plays for the limited ice time he had. Gave him a short leash as if he wasn't going to improve as the tournament went on.

He's got pretty darn good 35/35+ potential and he's easily still a top 10 pick. Many have had him in the top 5 and still do. I think everyone drafted in the top 9 (sorry, Boucher) have trended upwards in some way actually.

You are joking, right?

You want to know my honest opinion on Knies?

Here it is:
I think Knies is one of the most overrated prospects in hockey. Just like Robertson, Scott, Bracco, Grundstrom and Finn before him. Leafs fans tend to latch onto one or two of their prospects and massively overrate them and set expectations for these guys that they likely won’t reach.
Did you know that Doan, Mazur and Knies are all ‘02’s? I don’t think it’s too far fetched to compare these 3 players like you’re implying since they’re are in the same age group.

Knies doesn’t posess the high end skill nessasary to be the high end prospect Leafs fans claim he is, I also find he is lazy in the defensive zone. He is a “safe” pick, he’ll either be a passenger on a second line or will be a good 3rd liner.
You can disagree with me all you want, but I think Knies was drafted right around where he should have been.
