I was looking at the list of free agents for this coming off season and I think there is some solid bottom 6 for wards to go after this year. I could see us possibly moving on from Freddy this off season if Campbell keeps performing well and I don't think it would be bad to run a tandem. Here's what I had in mind barring some of these guys don't re sign with their teams.

Hyman Matthews Marner
Robertson Tavres Nylander
Cogliano Kerfoot Mikheyev
Bennett Cizikas Anderson
Korshkov

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl/Dermott
Sandin Savard/Liljegren
Lehtonen

Campbell
Halak/Raanta/Rittich

That 4th line would be a pain in the ass to play against. They all bring skating ability, grit, heart and a little skill. Plus Bennett is a hometown boy and grew up a Leafs fan. Cogliano is a battler and ultimate team guy. Savard bring some size and stability to the right side. Likely one of Dermott or Holl gets claimed by Seattle. Could possibly see Kerfoot moved as well. Obviously the goaltending will be a little suspect but if you get 2 guys in there who battle like a Campbell/Rittich behind a team that is harder on pucks, it could be a good formula.

Thoughts?

After we win the cup this year we should just keep the same lineup next season, no?

Yes and no. I don't know if that's ever the best idea (a player or two probably would have overachieved). I also don't know that it would be viable from a cap perspective. I ideally wouldn't be contemplating wholesale changes though. A player will likely be lost to Seattle as well. In all honesty, they could change half of the team and other personnel if they win the Cup and I probably wouldn't even notice until the games start back up again! ;)

Next offseason is pretty much sign one of Hyman or Andersen and then sign a bunch of bargain contracts to fill out the rest of the roster

Hyman is one of those FA on other teams shopping list
Ya there's a chance he leaves but I think both Hyman and the Leafs won't want to part ways. Unless he decides that he wants too much money but I'm not sure that's in his character. He seems like the guy that would take a hometown discount to help the team win. Fingers crossed

I figure we re-sign Hyman post-expansion draft and protect Holl, leaving Kerfoot/Dermott exposed. Unless we make a trade with Vegas of course. For me, priority one is goaltending, then center depth, then winger depth. Cizikas is a good add, I doubt Lehtonen returns unless his roles increases. I wouldn't mind seeing us move one of our quality D/W prospects for a quality NHL player.

Up front, the issue looks like 3C with risk that Kerfoot heads out via expansion.
My hope is for a Dermott for young/exempt defensively aware C trade, making Kerfoot the best available Leaf, effectively killing two birds with one stone.
I’d like to see Holl protected from the draft, unless someone better is acquired.
I agree on keeping Hyman and the tandem goalie approach.
The overlooked part here for me, pre-free agency, is infusing the team with internal youth that’s at the put-up/shut-up/overcooked stage. Sandin and Lili should be phased in next year if not before.
There’s also Anderson, Korshkov and Hallander who should be ready, with Brooks/Robertson/Engvall/Malgin in the mix.

If Holl continues his current play, any chance he is protected over Muzzin? Or do they protect Muzz thinking Holl is carried by his partner

Edit, I suppose they could protect 4 forwards and 4 D, and expose Kerfoot or Mikheyev as well

There's flexibility with the Muzzin and Brodie contracts in that neither has to be protected. I'm not sure Dubas would do that (leave them unprotected) in either case, but I do find it interesting that both players have NMCs for this season only. Mikheyev is exempt.

Leafs probably re-sign Hyman, let Andersen walk and pick up a capable goalie to run a tandem with Campbell. Alternatively if Woll and/or Scott impress with the Marlies you could see the team give them a shot at a backup/tandem job. They also likely protect 4 forwards and 4 D. Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin, and one of Holl or Dermott get protected while the other gets taken. If Holl keeps playing like he is though I don't see why you wouldn't protect him even though Dermott is a lot younger.

If I were to guess at what the roster looks like next season:

Hyman-Matthews-Marner
Mikheyev-Tavares-Nylander
Robertson-Kerfoot-Engvall
Hallander-Brooks-Anderson
Korshkov

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Liljegren

Campbell
Halak

They are definitely not exposing Muzzin. If Holl continues his current play the Leafs expose Dermott as much as that would suck.

not sure you can make this fit under the cap

Ya I didn't do the cap friendly in it. Figured I'd we could get all the additions for 2M or less it might work but looking at it now you're probably right. Would likely have to scratch the Savard and Cogliano additions. So something more like this?

Hyman Matthews Marner
Robertson Tavares Nylander
Bennett Kerfoot Mikheyev
Korshkov Cizikas Anderson

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Sandin Liljegren

Campbell
Halak

Yeah the only way Muzzin would get exposed is ifnhe looks physically destroyed by seasons end. And that's not likely to happen.

Irs Dermott/Kerfoot or they pay the extra assets for them to take Engvall

In net, I think you're looking at going with a 1B type if they don't re-sign Andersen.

Some options:
- Raanta
- Halak
- Reimer

It's a bit of a crapshoot since goalies are too plentiful.

Otherwise, on defense there's a bit of a log jam with the top 4 under contract, and Dermott/Sandin/Liljegren/Lehtonen. At this point bringing Bogo back makes sense. Depends on if they make a trade. Names of interest based on affordability:

- Denis Savard
- Stephen Johns
- Matt Niskanen

Up front, better wingers would be a plus.

- Brandon Saad has had a rough start in Colorado, if he struggles this year he would be worth a flier on a short term deal
- Nick Foligno (though I have a hard time seeing him leaving Columbus)
- Nick Bjugstad
- Adam Lowry
- Zack Smith might be a worth cheap flier
- Barclay Goodrow
- Mattias Janmark

That’s how I see the D and G next year too.
