Wagner showed some really good things in the 18/19 season.

He scored 1.3 goals per 60 minutes of 5v5 TOI. That was the best on the team.

His point totals per 60 minutes were also by far the best on the team at 2.31 (Kopitar's was 1.55 for reference).

He created a lot of scoring chances all on his own. He had all the makings of guy who could be a quality middle 6 forward and top notch PKer, but when things stunted and it was clear he needed more time to work on his game in the AHL, the Kings for some reason held him up in the NHL while his game flat lined.

By the time they finally made the right move and sent him down, there was a bunch of other players ahead of him on the depth chart.

Really annoyed me how he was handled after showing so much promise in 18/19.

He averaged less than 9min per game over 62 games that year.

A guy with his speed isn't still there to be taken in the 4th rd unless something is missing. It's possible that his peak as an NHL player, which was already unlikely considering where he was selected, was those first games of a rookie season, no matter what. If he had hands, he's not still there at 99th overall. Vilardi is the opposite, all hands, no speed, and even with an injury problem he went in the 1st rd. Maybe everyone figured him out, and he didn't have the necessary talent to push any further. Minutes went up, stats went down.

Is it a development thing, or was there just not a lot to work with?

Yes. That's what makes that production so impressive.

It's certainly possible that he wouldn't have panned out regardless.

I'm just saying he showed good things and I didn't like the way he was handled.

Part of the reason I bring it up is because people around here always want to shit on Wagner for some reason, without acknowledging some of the very good stuff he showed in his rookie year.

FYI, I also did not like the way Vilardi was handled. I thought they threw him into the NHL too soon. Again, I don't know if it would make a difference or not. I can only speculate.

Wagner was instant offense and speed and some grit at a time when the roster had none. I actually think that version of him would be a GREAT fit now, especially with the emotional engagement up.

HOwever, somewhere along the line, his hands went bad--which is ok--but his decision making made him a liability and he's done a lot of the same in the AHL.

I'm not as done with him as some are I think he's a useful depth player if he can sort out those issues but there's just too many bodies in front of him right now of similar wins-above-replacement and just slightly different skillsets. Lizotte for example. Not nearly as mean or gritty, but more tenacious and a better offensive IQ. But similar ability to get in quickly and be a pain in the ass. That' when Wagner is at his best, flying and throwing the body around, being disruptive.

That being said, 1-1-3 is absolutely terrible for a guy like Wagner, he would look better this year imo.

Who was he doing it against? How many of the goals were on those famed Wagner breakaways?
Can you accept that he did some nice things his rookie season and flashed potential? That's why the Kings kept him up in the NHL for so long because of what they saw from him initially.

Does it bother you that I didn't like the way he was handled?

When posters criticize Kings management or development, you always make these implications that posters are being unrealistic. And you're often right. But here you're doing it to me, and nothing I've said about Wagner or his handling is off the rails.

We all know his Qcomp is going to be lower because he's a rookie playing on the 4th line. And you know it too. That goal scoring rate at the NHL level is still impressive regardless of competition.

Can the Kings doctors just swap Vilardi’s torso on Wagner’s legs?
