Its a lot of hockey for NHLer's. Seasons are so grueling and just long. Not to mention injuries, players need time to heal, recover and post season workout. Just gets to be too much

Hockey used to be a winter sport and winter job. Now it's year around

I won't support any "world cup" that only has six countries and a bunch of makeups.

Do it properly or not at all.

wtf, bad news imo.

i would prefer if olympics with nhlers AND world cup existed.

the world cup 1996 and 2004 where fantastic.

such an ugly rigged (in favour of the na teams) tourney with a couple of frankenstein teams in it. good riddance.

Rigged in favour of North American teams? Canada was not able to select the Art Ross and likely Hart winner for this season and USA was not able to select multiple players due to the very rules of the tournament. The rules were terrible, but they certainly didn't favour Canada or USA.

This is a negative overall. The World Cup can be a great tournament when the people in charge let it be a best on best instead of a joke tournament with gimmick teams and unfair rules. That is apparently a big "if" though given how idiotically the NHL handled the tournament in 2016. This is also a worrying trend for international hockey in general. The NHL seems increasingly committed to using international hockey as jut another bargaining chip, and give the labour history between the NHL and the NHLPA that is obviously going to lead to a negative result for fans.

By definition, aren't the World Championships pretty much hockey's equivalent to the FIFA World Cup?

Can the IIHF just make it in the offseason or something?

To think that we could have had a best-on-best International hockey tournament every 2 years...instead we got a glorified all-star tournament, and no NHL players going to Korea. Next Chance we get to see a Crosby/McJesus team Canada will be 2022 and Crosby could possibly be retired by then...great job NHL....

USA finally has 4-5 elite players and they won't play for years.

Awesome!

Next time they were probably planning on letting guys with german names play for germany, etc.

I believe they were gonna do away with nationalities all together and make the teams based on the players zodiac signs or favorite flavor of ice cream or some ****.

Tagline... World Cup 2020: Come out and see the Stars!

Think of all the super cool jerseys the NHL can design and sell with zodiac signs, bruh!
Scorpio can have like a scorpion on the front, taros can have a cool angry bull, cancer can have the Owners on the front. Lots of new revenue to be made there.

Perfect world:

World Champ every season AFTER the NHL postseason to give every NHLer the option to play.
World Cup and Olympics alternate every 2 seasons.

We get our handicapped World Champ every season
We get out gimmicky World Cup where every game is competitive.
We get our Olympics.

Really makes it hard to be a fan of this business organization after the years of this clown show they've been putting on with lockout after lockout, asinine franchise expansion choices (short term gain, long term financial disasters), revenue sharing and complete disregard for the international game for the sake of pure billionaire greed.

All we can do aside from whine on a forum is put our money where our mouth is and boycott the league until they clean house on the BoG. Not possible or realistic for a lot of us I know, but we follow Junior and international hockey now and have tuned off NHL programming entirely and frankly am less aggravated by the entertainment product I get.

Frankly I don't trust them to put on something worth watching with the World Cup anyway, so this may be good news.

This is not good news. We like international hockey, hence why we're on this board. We want to see good international hockey, international hockey done right, not the elimination of it.

Think of it like this. We love gluten-free frozen yogurt. A gluten-free frozen yogurt stand is set up across the street, only, the frozen yogurt isn't gluten free. What we should want isn't the stand to shut down but rather for them to start serving gluten-free frozen yogurt as advertised.

The World Cup is not a true international tournament and the mere existence of it is harmful to international hockey so yes, this is good news.

Just because in its current format it isn't an international tournament doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be reformed, see the prior analogy. Neither is it harmful for international hockey as it seems the Olympic participation is affected more by venue than by the coexistence of another event.

How is it affected by venue? I seem to remember that non-hockey Nagano/Torino had similar overall participation to Vancouver/Sochi
