Okay thats immediate impact as in this year.

What about next year? What about his game would keep him from legitimately competing for a spot?
The current, better options at his position stuck in front of him; which obviously can change but as of now his best case scenario is what like 5th on the depth chart?

Sure but the team still needs to make room for him. Obviously that can happen later, but I’m not a fan of the pick. Drafting 1st enables you to take a big swing at 19/22 which would have been getting a center like Lapierre or Marat K.
I think this could also qualify as a big swing. Our main concern in this draft is #1. We're so used to drafting one pick in this range that I think we put too much emphasis on it in this sitiuation. Honestly, it doesn't really. It's all around the same at that point.

If he's Mclirath, who cares. When we picked Dylan McIlrath we didn't have the 1st overall pick as well.

Also, the fact that the Devils were about to pick him makes it all the sweeter.

If this kid busts, he busts. But if he busts, it's not like he was our only shot in the first round.

Only thing I don't like about the Schneider pick is the number of times I am likely to refer to him as "Mathieu" Schneider in my elder moments. Lindgren was a steadying influence on Fox. McDonagh thrived when paired with Sauer. The team has a ton of puck movers on the back end. A guy like Schneider gives them the freedom to take an extra chance or two.

Avs fan here. I’d like to compliment you on your A+ draft. Yes, you got Laf but that was predictable.

Where I was especially impressed was the pick after that. With all the amazing puck moving defensemen, it’s logical that the stay at home, shut down defenseman will make a resurgence. In many ways, Braden Schneider represents that. It was an absolute and total boss move to jump NJ to get him. I was big on Schneider (for the reasons I mentioned) but as I watched NYR jump NJ, I was fascinated to see why. Then when NJ massively reached and took their next best D on principle, it became obvious NYR outplayed NJ. Total boss move of the first round. :thumbu:

Thank you! Please sign Henrik to do a tandem and go all the way!

I have a huge amount of respect for him. If he was the back up, it wouldn’t bother me. Last year, Francouz allegedly was injured during the playoffs but he performed so poorly, Im not sure you can say injury was the entire reason. Henrik is obviously more battle tested. I’ve wondred if H would be a better back up than Francouz.

I don’t think the Avs management agrees with me though.

he didn't say he wants to play center. he said he'd be open to trying...basically he'll do whatever the team wants him to do.
“That’s something I’m really hoping to try, I’ve played center a little bit, for sure it’s different a little bit, but for sure you can adjust as a player. And that’s something I’m gonna — I’m really hoping to and we’ll see what happens”

If you said you’re hoping to have pizza tonight does that mean you want to have pizza or you’d be open to eating it if you had to? Lol, it came across more as if he wants to than just he’ll do whatever the team asks of him, sounded almost as if he’s had this discussion with the Rangers brass before

I think Henrik has his best chance, backup or no, with you guys, not the Caps. Like I said, wish you luck next season either way, but would love for you guys to take our boy all the way.

What can I say. I wouldn’t hate that either as long as Henrik can be on his game for spot duty. I’m not completely sure where his game is but I’m not convinced he doesn’t have more in the tank.

I like Schneider himself as a player, I just don’t like trading up for him when he could have been available at 22. I don’t care that NJ took a defender right after at 20, they took a completely different type of defender that they needed more than Schneider. I also don’t like passing on Lapierre after trading up.

I get why they picked Schneider. They wanted toughness. I just have McIlrath parallels in my head. Not saying he’s going to be like McIlrath, I think he’ll be far better, but there’s some similarities in these two scenarios.

The Rangers believed, correct or incorrect, that Schneider wasn’t making it past both New Jersey and Columbus.

Fo the cost of a third, I can live with the trade up. That’s about as small of a price as you’re going to pay to move up in the first.

With Lapierre the concern is always going to be health. The talent is there, and maybe he shines for three years. But there’s also the risk that he’s knocked out of the sport sooner rather than later. For whatever reason, right or wrong, the Rangers were spooked by the medical reports. That’s where that decision came from.

My concern with using “toughness” is that it’s become a derogatory term that gets applied liberally and without appropriate context.

Is Schneider tough? Yeah. He’s mean and he’s aggressive and he is difficult to play against. But he’s not a guy going out of his way to make checks, or dropping the gloves all the time. He’s tough in the sense that McD was tough - he’s all over his opponents and smothers them.

I think most people’s problems with Schneider is that they were focused on other players. That’s fine, but that’s not a reflection on Schneider as a prospect. He can’t control that.

If we’re judging him on his play, and not our preferences for the Rangers, there’s actually nothing wrong with him at 19. Hell, last week we had no problem voting him as the 15th player off the board in our mock draft.

He said it was something he was "open" to try.

Holy shit you guys are obsessed with the Devils lol
it makes quite the read!

Us Devils fans seem to do the same with the Rangers so reading both boards is equally entertaining and just fuels the future rivalry

Jack vs Alexis, Holtz vs Kakko, Im loving it! Nico vs... ah shit okay only one shot at the Rangers tonight lmao, its your guys' night winning Lafreniere

Good luck tomorrow!

Devils huge reach prob bc we took Dchneider
Turns out NJ didn't have Schneider high on their board

We had Mukh as our next best available dman and looked to trading down, but couldn't. Wasn't necessarily cause Mukh didn't deserve 20th, but just to acquire extra assets. He's setting a few KHL records at 18 so he is impressive, even if he didn't get ranked high past the ISS (they had him 22)

I personally wasn't a fan of Schneider but the Rangers clearly like him, and enough to trade up too! I dont doubt they thought NJ liked him as well as we have a history of drafting bigger, physical dmen in the last 3-4 years.

I think at the end of the day, the Rangers did what they’ve typically done - they went ahead and got their guy and didn’t leave it up to chance.

Maybe NJ takes Schneider, maybe they don’t. Maybe Columbus takes Schneider, maybe they don’t. But moving up also prevents either of those teams from trading down with another team that liked Schneider.

I can’t help but feel like whoever we took at 22 was going to get mixed reactions. There’s literally not a guy on that board who we haven’t heard fans express both praise and concern about.

That’s what happens with later picks.

But the truth is that no matter who they picked, people were going to be upset. For every possible player we could’ve taken there exists a follow-up line from a fan lamenting the player, the organization, and most likely both.
