Add in that, from the info @Edge gave us, Mercer wasn’t on the Rangers radar where the Devils selected him.

Which surprised me a little because I really like Mercer.

But at the end of the day, I think they saw him as more a second/third line tweener. A potentially good one, but not necessarily a core, top-six forward.

I would have thought that FLA & TOR would have taken Schneider. Every "source" or friend that I talk or watch hockey with had Schneider in the top 15. So he slid. But I think it's a pick that is symbolic as well.

If Brady Skjei was Bizarro, Braden Schneider is Superman if you get what I mean. When you're trying to establish a culture and build the type of identity is competitive in playoff hockey, this is a good move. I would say that there are similarities between Braden and the McIlrath pick yes. But the former can skate.

That being said- this is a player who may have 4 years of hard mileage on him before some of his other draftmates get a fraction of the amount. In other words, his body might not be built for a career that's in the 12-15 year range. So you have some concerns really far down the road, but that's okay. He can make his bones in the meantime.

McIlrath had more work to do on his skating than I think Schneider has now but it was something that should have developed much better had not Kyle Jean f***ed up his kneecap. On the eve of his first pro season which was a critical year and that injury screwed up his first two/three years of pro. McIlrath was also drafted to be a policeman.

The one thing I'm wondering is if the Rangers would contemplate moving Schneider to LD because he's more that stay behind type who is less likely to get caught out of positioning and because he has size and strength to handle the extra hitting that would come his way. Otherwise I really don't know what we're going to do with all these RD's.

From the HockeyProspect Black Book

"We didn't see a single poor performance from this prospect this season, and we had a good number of viewings of him by the end of the season.

"I have him ahead of Drysdale on my list. Great kid too" - NHL scout from April '20

"Teams need to have defenders who can match up against the top scorers at the highest level."

And on a 3-9 rating scale...
Hockey Sense: 8
Compete: 8
Skill: 6
Skating: 7
Miscellaneous: 8

JD's reaction was spot on. Loved what I have seen from Schneider. Nobody knew who Lundkvist was in 2018, either.

That's not true, I knew who Lundkvist was in 2018. I knew he'd be a player to potentially give Sam Rosen an aneurysm if he and Hank managed to get onto the active roster at the same time

Also want to reiterate teams out west and teams that scouted the WHL heavily all had Schneider in their top 10s. Those western teams don’t always get a ton of eyeballs on them. But those teams all loved him. That should tell you a lot. And one team in particular out west that has done a tremendous job scouting and drafting lately loved loved loved him

Put me down as sleeping better tonight knowning I have 18 and 19 year old Matthew Robertson and Braden Schneider in our pipeline

Not your flashy options. Not your sexy options. Not the guys who jump to the top of fans' prospect lists.

But valuable support players who project as the type you win with. You've heard me mention guys who would've fit right in on Colorado's defense back in the 90s and early 2000s. Those guys are Lindgren, Robertson and Schneider.

Those guys round out our defense nicely with Miller, Nils, and Fox. On top of Trouba.

It could be a domino that frees up another RHD for a trade. But that’s also not a great reason to draft someone necessarily either.

Good thing we didn't draft Laperriere after drafting Lafreniere. That would have cause Sam to retire.

And look no further than the blueline JD had in STL he knows the type of bodies you need back there

I love those types of players too...if they pan out. But I don't just assume they will because they had a high draft grade and have a physical profile.

I really don't think at this point the Rangers have any intention of moving Georgiev. We're going to sign him. The guy that they're looking to move is Strome. We may move DeAngelo too or we may wait a year. Of the reasons for moving both of them--they're both at the point where they're looking at both term and serious $'s.
