Man, it's going to be grueling waiting for the season to re-start. Might be another 50 years before we get to draft another first overall, let alone draft on after picking #2 the season prior

Panarin-Zib-Laf on the PP... holy smokes that's going to be fun to watch. I almost feel bad for the other teams

I'm sure players like Brian Leetch, Mark Messier and Adam Graves couldn't have cared any less about the Rangers growing up or before they got here as players. After they spent their time here, they are some of the organization's biggest cheerleaders.

Almost always, no matter what your allegiances were, everything changes once you step through that door. Lindros was a special case. From a Sportsnet article:

Lindros, naturally, was the obvious first pick in the 1991 NHL entry draft, but did not want to play for the Quebec Nordiques, who owned that pick. It was less about the culture and the city as it was about co-owner Marcel Aubut and whether they could maximize Lindros’ marketing potential in that market.

There is more that went into it but I look at this way. Do you think Sidney Crosby wanted to play in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania of all places!?!?

Yup and McDavid in modern Edmonton.

I think that's a real honorable thing and players know that. You deal with it if it's not a great spot and try your absolute hardest for your new team. True champion shit from a young man.

But you're talking about OUR power play, which can implode instantaneously for no reason at all.

Yeah, but ours tend to do a lot of 2 minutes of nothing, no entry, no zone time, not shooting. Those types of things.
Yea PP failure isn't just down to whether you score.

Truly abysmal PP's deflate momentum in the fans and the team.

If you don't score but you get great opportunities and keep the PK on its heels the whole time it helps instill confidence and can lead to the next few shifts keeping that momentum. Not to mention the advantage that comes with completely wearing out the four guys on the ice.

Do that to a PK unit a few times and by the 3rd or 4th they're already frazzled like "Oh f*** here we go again"

I’m going to say 40 points from him this year. Sort of keeping my expectations in check. That’s better than some recent 1OAs but not going off like Auston Matthews.

I was thinking about this before.

Where does Lafreniere rank amongst the top draftees from the past 10 drafts?

Obviously not as good as McDavid or Kane but better than some others like Yakupov for sure.

Theres an exact Athletic article about this.

Spoiler alert: NHL execs did a mini draft of the last 11 first overall picks (including Lafreniere this year). He was 5th behind McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon, and Dahlin, but he got serious consideration over both Dahlin and Mackinnon so i have to think he’s right there. Next came Hughes then Ekblad, then Hischier, then Nugent Hopkins, then Hall.

Couple of the drafters seemed to really skew for position.... in fact the MacKinnon and Dahlin picks were made with justification over Lafreniere because of the position they played or that they had already produced in the league. Multiple said “If Lafreniere was a center it’s not even close, it’s Lafreniere.”

So he’s probably right there.

Hopefully the fan base at large is prepared for the possibility that he doesn’t light the world on fire in year 1. It is certainly possible that he ends up exploding onto the scene, but we should be ready for him to struggle at times. Hopefully the focus can stay on how he looks and his work ethic rather than on how many points he puts up.

I think what he has going for him is the talent around him now. I mean worse case he’s playing on a third line with chytil and kakko maybe??

It's a good starting point and especially for his Rookie season where he'll be leaning on other players and finding his way in the NHL pace, his point totals will be highly dependent on PP time and line placement. In the last 10 years, 18-19 year old forwards have averaged 39 pts per 82 games.
