Just from a frame perspective they look exactly the same at the moment. Laf is already Huberdeau sized though so he'll end up playing heavier.

A big difference between the two is that Hubereau is a bit more slippery as a player where as Lafreniere is more willing and able to physically push the action in those high traffic areas. In a way Laf is a blend of both Huberdeau and the guy taken ahead of him in 2011.

Every so often Huberdeau gets a bug up his ass and has a pushy side. With Lafreniere, that bug is persistent and he brings it on the ice. That speaks to some that difference you’re pointing out.

We talk about Barkov, but Huberdeau is almost quietly a 30 goal, 90-95 point player. If a scout sees that, with a more horsepower under the hood and an aggressive streak, I’ll take it.

Kessel is one of those guys who people almost forget how supremely talented he actually is.

They remember his personality, they remember memes about his physical conditioning, but he really is an elite level offensive talent.

At one time, he was seen as a potential top pick in his draft class. Questions about his commitment to the game is partially what dropped him.

Even now, you regularly hear scouts and people around the league question just how good Kessel could be if he actually dedicated himself completely to being his best.

Because for as good as he is, there’s the perception he could be even better if his work ethic matched his natural ability.

This is kind of my point. Until the 80's everyone showed up to training camp out of shape and really didn't get into what people today would consider game shape until the playoff push. Seems like the players made no bones about it. In that league Kessel would be a legend period. In the current NHL he is the butt of a lot of jokes despite being a very good player. Always makes me wonder who was the guy who flipped the switch and made NHLers more health and fitness conscious. Gary Roberts certainly is a big voice, but there must of been someone who pushed him or was further ahead of him on the curve. Did it come out of the Soviet system?

It’s a good question and one I can’t really remember. The turning point I remember was the early 90s. As the movement toward bigger, stronger players took hold, it seemed like you couldn’t get away without the extra work and a lot more coaches started demanding it.

You also started to see guys like Messier and Brindamour who really upped the training and dietary considerations - and in some cases influenced those around them.

Basically, the season would need to start January 15 to fit in a 48 game schedule plus playoffs before the Summer Olympics. The Summer Olympics matters because of NBC.
56 games equals 4X per week over 14 week season. Add a week for possible COVID disruptions. Playoffs start w/o May 3. With two game series and much less travel, 4X per week should be fine.

Brindamour is the first guy I really remember seeing in street clothes and thinking this guy is an animal. Not a juicer, but his mom was putting creatine in his rice krispies. Definitely late 80's early 90's is when the change over took place.

Messier, Brindamour, Stevens comes to mind.

There was always specimens in every era, but that era is when it seemed those guys started to become more of the rule than the exception. Mike Richter was the first goalie I can remember seeing who was pretty jacked as well. Prior to that, many of them looked like MLB pitchers.

There is a line at the end that really caught my attention.

I had a friend who works for a team other than the Rangers tell me that Lafreniere reminds him a bit of Huberdeau, but with all the offensive attributes cranked a level.

Yep, caught my attention too. Can't wait to see if he uses the same cucumber on the Rangers.

Do we know if the Rangers have him living with anyone? Saw a pic of him and K'Andre together for Christmas and was wondering if they're staying with any vets on the team.

Fantastic article in the Athletic.

Miller and Laf are quickly becoming best friends, living together in what seems to be a truly magnificent home in Connecticut - Almost too good to be true - the Rangers really know what they are doing here trying to build a winner. 10 minutes from the Prentiss gym too.

Kudos to Drury and the family taking these kids in to make their transition to the NHL the best it could possibly be.

Man, I am so f***ing pumped to watch Laf, Kakko, Shesty, Fox and the rest of the kids. Still cant believe they were able to land him.

Camp starts Sunday!!!

Is MSG doing any sort of camp special again this year?

Can you or someone provide the cliff's notes for those who don't want to hurdle the paywall? Thanks in advance.

Article opens with how Laf and his agent had to get through customs. They drove down from Quebec and one of the customs agents who was a big Rangers fan apparently noticed Laf before he got into the states.

The billet family (also big Rangers fans) in Darien have 3 boys (11, 12 & 15) who also play hockey and they have 2 on 3 games in their backyard rink against Miller & Laf. How freakin amazing is that for the boys? Talk about lucky!

Apparently Miller has been there for 6 months before Alexis arrived and he's been there since November/Thanksgiving.

The home, quite simply, is magnificent. The walk from the driveway through a beautifully lit and decorated breezeway leads to the backyard and an outdoor rink the size of a tennis court that is maintained like an indoor rink, complete with boards and a small ice resurfacing machine housed in a shed at the far end of the structure.

Think Field of Dreams, but for hockey players.

At the end of the rink nearest the house, Muskoka chairs line an upper viewing area. Inside the back door is a small changing area with NHL-style dressing stalls, a skate-sharpening machine and a stick locker.

Adjacent to the changing rooms and laundry is a two-level recreation area with televisions, couches and chairs on the lower level that look out onto the backyard rink. Upstairs is another comfortable sitting area dominated by a massive stone fireplace.

There is a ping pong table, a pool table and, against one wall, a golf simulator.

The simulator features top golf courses from around the world and fits nicely with Lafrenière’s newfound affection for the game, which he took up in earnest this summer when the pandemic closed down rinks and gyms. He is left-handed and already scores regularly in the 80s.

Miller and Laf have hit it off apparently

“It was actually kind of funny. One of the first dinners we had we sat down and that was one of the things that came up that we were both a little nervous,” Miller said.

“It’s grown almost like a best friend. Being together every day, training every day together you kind of grow that bond really quickly. That first night it was almost like we were brothers to some degree. That bond grows really quickly. We both have a very high compete level and we push each other quite a bit and it’s just made the transition for him moving in really easy.”

One of the topics that came up almost immediately was a shared moment on the international stage.

“I think one of the questions at the table was what were some of the coolest moments in your hockey career and the play where he actually picked off my pass and went in and scored,”Miller said. “Everyone was laughing. It was a great, funny moment to be a part of and obviously we give each other some crap being from Canada, being from Minnesota. It’s all fun and games. We chirp each other a little bit here and there.”

Then they go into how Laf did some photo shoots and autograph sessions with Upper Deck and how he's handling the transition to the NHL. Apparently UD had a secret photo shoot with him wearing a Rangers jersey a few weeks before the draft and everyone at the school where they took the photos had to sign non-disclosure agreements to not leak that he was going to be drafted 1st overall by the Rangers.

Lecavalier and Lindros also added some quotes to the write-up. Noting how important it is for Quebec.

For those outside Quebec, the distinction may be a subtle one, if it exists at all. But for those who understand the deep connection between hockey and Quebec culture, well, it’s not so subtle at all.

It’s why you will see an accent on Lafrenière’s jersey above the second “e” as it would be written in French. It was a request made by the family and the Rangers obliged, even though it rarely happens in the NHL.

Mods, if I posted too much let me know and I'll take it down.

Man I hope so. I know it’s different but feels like camp isn’t a few days away from starting. Hope we get some coverage and videos starting Sunday.

This is what I love so much about hockey and the family culture that is born out of the sport.

These two kids living together, for even a few months - they will remember that for the rest of their lives and it will only help the Rangers down the line. My parents served as billets for a couple of my teammates when I played in College and those bonds last and it helped to build us into a winning team.

Just today in fact, I spoke with two coaches (husband and wife) who ran several clinics in the NJ area back in the 80's in 90's. We've stayed connected for over 25 years, sending Christmas cards and talking on the phone from time to time. Its that special bond you have with good people in the sport that is hard to really put into words.

So to hear that two future Rangers who are projected to be major parts of this team are living together in a special setting makes me really happy and even more excited for what is to come.
