False confidence doesn’t help. Last year’s playoffs showed real growth, success at the WJC isn’t close to that at all. You don’t need to play a series against weaker competition to get conditioned properly.

Maybe, but, having fun and representing his country might be a nice change of pace mentaly. Also, if Lafreniere plays LW for Canada, the two can challenge each other on the ice and if we're lucky, in a medal game.

These guys are highly competitive Thorobreds. I'm sure they both have bantered the possibility and even a some ribbing about "what if" they are granted the opportunity.

I see it as a very healthy experience for both.

That is what he should be aiming for. 70-80 point seasons regularly with an outlier where he tops 90 or even close to 100.

That’s the dream, but I’d be happy to see him establish himself as a legit top 6 forward with 50+ points before I start reaching too high. That’s obviously the ultimate hope, but I hate to throw such lofty expectations on a teenager.

The person I really feel bad for is Ovechkin. Between 2004-05, 2012-13, 2019-20 and now 2020-21 he has had 1 season fully cancelled and 3 shortened seasons while chasing that elusive 894 record.

Similar sentiment for Jagr's point totals. Missed half of 94-95, all of 2004-05, part of 2012-13, and the years he was back in the KHL.

Really hope he ends up going to the WJCs...its looking like the chances the NHL in Jan are slim to none at this point.

Yes. This times 1000.

Playing 3 competitive games in 11 months (assuming a Feb 1st start is even happening) is not how you want your 19-year old, 2nd overall pick, to develop

Why? He played WAY too much over the past 18 months. I am fine with him getting a bit of a break and working on his conditioning and strength. Zero reason to just go and play games.

A bit of a break, sure. He hasn't played hockey in 7 of the last 8 months and the NHL season is probably still 2 months away

I haven't heard this. I have just heard a reduced schedule and a bubble for the divisions at the most. Likely some divisional travel and no bubble.
They were hoping to start Jan 1st, but the sides arent even talking to each other once the league gave the NHLPA their demands.

Definitely a bit disappointing when you look at the NBA who figured everything out quickly and have pre season games starting in less than 2 weeks.

Even if they were to begin hard negotiations tomorrow I dont even think there would be enough time to get everything ready for a early Jan start.

Agreed. Kakko looked completely gassed because of all the hockey he played before he even stepped on the ice for NYR. Don’t need a repeat with Laf.
How are those two circumstances anywhere near similar? Kakko was playing competitive hockey for over a year with barely a break, Laf hasn't played competitive hockey since March. He needs more of a break to recover from what exactly?

Basically, the season would need to start January 15 to fit in a 48 game schedule plus playoffs before the Summer Olympics. The Summer Olympics matters because of NBC.
