Now that we have effed ups the generational QB, let's not screw up the generational OT selection, Sewell.
Thankfully we can't do worse than 2OA.
Had we won first overall, could have offered Darnold + SEA 2021 1st + NYJ 2022 1st unprotected to Jacksonville for 2021 2OA and couple of future 2nds.
The issue is not throwing Darnold under the bus or not; the issue is adding signif dif makers esp on OL. I would have risked Sewell to take Lawrence but not now.
Darnold is fine 'enough', he is adequate to good/+. Possibly he can excel if there is enough time to throw, and a better supporting cast would help. We effed up and obv should have taken Allen with that pick, as he looks like the return of John Elway. Instead we went with the safe consensus and Bills look good this year.
That's what can happen when those in charge do not consider bern when he says
think outside the box.
I can live with Darnold who may/may not grow to spectacular but seems with enough reasonable support to be solid. Use draft resources to get high end. After Sewell, think higher impact players.
One alternate scenario:
IF 29 yr old Garapolo (sp?) is no longer a fit in SF [think he has a short term deal], then...
something around
Darnold
for
SF 2021 (projected 14OA) + OT
Mike McGlinchey + Garap.
that gives Niners a younger, stable building block likely firming up signal caller for 5 or so years.
Jets get an immediate 6'8" OT who would, with Sewell and Beckton, create serious protection. Add to that a value/impact 1st and an x factor in JG.
Ok, back to the real world.
