I rather not draft a player too high simply for his funny name. Add a 2nd rounder and target Wiesblatt that way

I think he’s a 1st round talent.

22 is too high for him though. It wouldn’t piss me off because I love the player, but I’d be a little annoyed at all of the available talent that they would undoubtedly pass on.

I think it comes down to philosophy. When it comes to forwards, size is literary a flaw 9/10 times. The guys 5’11-6’1 just do better than the taller forwards most of the time (of course not always). What you gain in reach and strength cannot make up for what the law of physics takes from your acceleration/agility. I love going back and check like rankings of top prospects outside the NHL because it really opens your eyes to have wrong some of these notions can lead you. Button has Barzal 28th in his top 50 like a year before MB started to destroy the NHL. Why? His size is a down side. Guys like Joel Eriksson-Ek, Adrian Kempe, Vlad Kamenev, Timo Maier and the likes are ranked way above him because they have “awsome size”. Why is size even a factor? It doesn’t even remotely in any significant way help someone that is big to compete with someone that is smaller but that can skate.

BUT, on the defense, I am far from convinced that the same is true and I think that many GMs out there are far from convinced of it also. There is of course no general rule that you must have 6 guys on the blueline built one way or the other. But it can definitely be that we a few years from now find it quite clear that to contend, you need 4 guys built one way and 2 guys the other.

When it comes to finding someone that is big, can play with an edge, clear the crease, be effective along the boards defensively, step up high defensively, they aren’t made that much better than Guhle. He — really — fits that bill.

There are players too small to justify an early round pick. Guys like St. Louis and Zuccarello are real rarities and neither of them were drafted. Fleury was a later rounder who made a positive out of a battered and angry psychological profile. To me they're kind of one offs.

To me size matters quite a bit as far as you don't want a defense corps too undersized that it can't control opposition activity around the front of your net. And it matters for forwards further down your lineup--at least some of your bottom 6 forwards should have a real physical component. It doesn't hurt in your top 6 either if the guy is a real player--Ovechkin, Malkin, MacKinnon, Matthews, Benn, Zibanejad, the Tkachuk's etc. etc. are all horses and being big helps enhance their games whether or not they're running around hitting a lot or not--they're all tough to handle players.

That makes for one of the forwards that we described to potentially drop into the range where one would consider a move. Especially if Askarov goes before 15.

I think at least one guy this board covets will end up within range. Question is whether the other team is willing to move the pick and if the Rangers feel it is worth it.

I can see someone like Mercer sitting there at 16 or 17. But does Montreal or Chicago want to make a deal?

While I think Mercer is a player who would fit the Rangers like a glove, and be a hell of a player, I honestly have no idea where the Rangers have him rated right now. For all I know there are several guys ahead of him and the Rangers are content to wait their turn.

Personally, I would love for Mercer to be the guy who slides a little, and the Rangers come in and make a reasonable deal to move up.

A Lafreniere/Mercer first round would make me incredibly happy.

I wonder what the Rangers would do if some combination of Lapierre, Perreault and Holloway are sitting there at 22.

My guess is they'd take Holloway. I feel reasonably comfortable saying they'd have him ahead of Perrault.

Lapierre is a wild card. I know they love the skill, but the injuries were a concern.

Are those concerns mitigated by taking Lafreniere? I don't know.

@Edge how up to date is your most recent insight into the organization? You keep mentioning earlier in the season. Is there a specific point of time you’re referencing the interest in certain players?

COVID and shutdowns in the east put everything into disarray in March.

So a lot of knowledge and opinions are through late February/early March.

Doesn't seem like that long ago, until you stop and realize it's 6 month old info.

I've had follow-up conversations since, but things are more scattered. Should have more insight this upcoming weekend.

Holloway

read (i’m sure many have) that Lapierre had three concussion in consecutive seasons. I’d say he drops

Wouldn't JL Foudy be a cost-controlled Hagelin?

Yes or even better. Kid's a A+ Plus 4th liner imo. Perfect pick in that 40-70 slot. I think he can end up going higher. There is going to be a team out there that says, I'm taking a sure handed pick. Think OTT or LA with one of their 2nds. Makes the overall draft successful for them.

Fooling around on draftsim--traded our 22 to Detroit for 3 2nd's--32, 45 and 55 + the 155 and 186. Then simulated through the draft from that point:

1. Lafreniere-LW
32. Reichel-C/LW
45. Greig-LW
55. Torgersson-LW/RW
71. Cuylle-LW
90. Evangelista-RW
102. Robins-C
133. S. Johannesson-RD
155. V. Persson-RD
164. Fowler-C
186. Valade-RW
195. Biondi-C
196. Oden-LW
205. Loof-LD

It’s been found out that it wasnt actually 3 concussions. He had a spinal injury involving twisted vertebrae that was causing headaches and other issues. So he actually had one concussion and one spinal injury.

Lol a 1st for three 2nds, 6th, and 7th.
22 for 32 + 45 is pretty par for the course. I don't think I've ever heard of a 5-for-1 draft pick trade. Maybe you also get the 7th there.

You mentioned potentially getting some info next weekend, are Mercer and Perreault and Lappiere guys that you might ask about by name to get some info on them?

I try to get an idea of who they like or how they feel about certain guys. I know Sanderson and Lundell were guys they loved and both were top candidates at the Rangers original draft position.

At 22 things will be cloudier and less specific because there’s so many variables.

It didn't work very well when I moved on Anaheim's #27 and an early 2nd. The #22 wasn't enough for that. When I tried Detroit--it just kept adding and adding. A late 1st and a 2nd is more valuable to the site than 3 2nds.

Yanic Perreault (Jacob) is a development coach for the Blackhawks and Mark Greig (Ridly) an amateur scout for the Flyers. Either of these guys could be 1st round picks and one wonders if Chicago might take a leap at Jacob whose main weakness is his compete and two way game. He's a talented guy otherwise--very good skater and a lethal shot. Greig makes some sense to the Flyers too as a later 1st rounder he's not really a big reach.

just loving it that we are talking what to do with #22 with Lafreniere in pocket. not sure how this season could have turned better. Zib was unreal to close out before covid, don't recall the stats but was en fuego. watching panarin on ice, magical at times. If Chytil can turn the corner, look out.

Opinions on value, or input on likeliness of the following swaps:

Ottawa #28 (Isles) and #33 for #22
Anaheim #27 (Boston) and #36 for #22
San Jose #30/31 (Tampa) and #34 for #22

Lots of wrangling to move up in discussions lately. With the evenness of the tier #22 is in and the lack of a second, maybe moving the other way is the option.

Great post, yeah I mean- if you trade down with the 22, and trade a player (ie Geo for 2 2nds), I think the build can go in a very fan friendly way if you know what I mean.

Say it's the Anaheim Deal & Geo goes to LA for 51 & 61, not saying it will happen, but just in terms of an attainable scenario. I would go for the following:

1- Laf
27- Wallinder
36- Greig
51- Johanesson
61- Foudy
74- Jurmo

I highly doubt some of those guys are there at that slot, but if so... whew boy.

Still; no thanks. I hope the kid has a long and successful career, but I'm not taking a chance on him. If he burns the Rangers on the ice in the future, so be it.
