Yeah me too.

Byfield will play as long as he stays healthy. Guys who are that big, fast and work as hard as he does will carve out a long career in this league one way or another. For the upside alone, I personally wouldn't rank him out side of the top 5 (or 4) but if you go back and look at these project picks who either don't pan out or don't completely put it together, the thing that holds them back is almost always hockey sense.

I would be mildly surprised if he became the best player to come out of this draft but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Perfetti and Rossi end up becoming better players than Byfield, if that makes sense.

100% agree. Byfield to me is big project. Everyone raves about how he is a hard worker and he may fix his issues. But to me hockey sense is not something that is easy to work on. I am also not a huge fan of him on the boards. For his size he is very passive. I just always have more questions after watching him then answers.

Let’s say we end with the 24th pick when all is said and done. What if for the sake of argument we target somebody in the teens say 16-19 what would it cost to move up IYHO. I know when we moved up for Miller from 26 to 22 it cost a second rounder

I think moving up from 24 to 19 cost a second rounder in 2004. There is no second rounder this season, so I don't know what they'd trade.

"With that said my way too early top 10 of 2020....

1. LW: Alexis Lafreniere
2. C/LW: Anton Lundell
3. RW: Lucas Raymond
4. C: Quinton Byfield
5. LW/RW: Alexander Holtz
6. C: Cole Perfetti
7. D: Jamie Drysdale
8. LW/RW: Noel Gunler
9. C: Marco Rossi
10. C: Dylan Holloway

Best goalie is Yaroslav Askarov!!"

I love to bring this up usually a week before the draft to compare and contrast with what I predicted a year ago (always for fun). Crazy to think last year this was my preliminary guess for the top 10. I have to say, I didn't do too bad. The only thing I missed on big was Stutzle, but I forgot Stutzle was ranked in the early teens before the season started. Lundell and Raymond fell, but I do think Lundell could still sneak into that top 5 somehow (depending on team's lists).

Any thoughts?

Fun indeed.

My September 2019:

1 Alexis Lafreniere
2 Lucas Raymond
3 Quinton Byfield
4 Noel Gunler
5 Anton Lundell
6 Cole Perfetti
7 Tim Stutzle
8 Alexander Holtz
9 Martin Chromiak
10 Jamie Drysdale

Now:

1 Alexis Lafreniere
2 Tim Stutzle
3 Quinton Byfield
4 Lucas Raymond
5 Seth Jarvis
6 Noel Gunler
7 Marco Rossi
8 Alexander Holtz
9 Jamie Drysdale
10 Anton Lundell

I have to say, Peterka is just — really — underrated this draft from my POV. There is some systematic error behind not one of the scouting services listed at EP having him higher than 17 and most in the mid 20s.

I am watching Canada-Germany in the U20 WJC right now. His ranking is odd.
Gotta figure theres probably at least a few organizations that are higher on those dudes than the rankings suggest. People definitely said Moritz Seider was a reach but whats hes done in the DEL and AHL as a teenager is impressive. What these kids are doing in a top mens league should not be overlooked

To your point, I will be shocked if there aren’t “reaches” that disrupt the so-called consensus.

That happens every year. This year feels especially ripe for teams to do their own thing.

I can make a sound argument for two guys being the second pick.

I could point to another 10 players ranked between 4 and 14 who could each be the best of that particular bunch.

I could make an argument that the guy picked 35th is just as good as the guy picked 15th.

The guy picked 45th could better than the 10 guys picked prior.

It’s fairly wide open.

Interesting. From what I have been reading most reports say his skating is generally fine. So wont necessarily be what keeps him back but also isn't going to be a tool that he can get by on in the NHL.

He's giving me a Derek Stepan vibe, not necessarily going to stand out but in the right situation can be a key cog in letting everyone else do their thing.

Not necessarily. I don't think he could step up in a way like Stepan has. His skating is fine for the juniors, but he's got to develop that extra step. Stepan was still able to gain speed with his clunky stride. Think Zary's game is reminiscent to Kerby Rychel. Similar styles and both had issues trying to reach their next step with their skating.

I would look elsewhere with their second 1st round pick, but I wouldn't hate the selection....

I've watched a decent bit of film on Zary and done some research on him lately and I'm admittedly not the biggest fan. His passing metrics also don't grade out well. Not sure if I personally see a very high upside with him.

Yeah I'm not advocating the selection, just seems like there are better options, ATM.

This is why if the cap ties them up and Strome or Georgiev go for picks I wont have a problem. This draft in particular theres so many interesting players all over the damn place. It seems like too many futures but if they go make a big move to bring some major piece in we could see guys like Kravstov, Chytil, etc. gone, and then we'll be glad we picked up some when we could

I must have done 60 sims over the past month. Even though Jarvis at 23 (or 24) is nuts, I really like this one. Elite playmakers at the top, big thick 2 way centers in the middle, and a few power forward and D prospects at the end.

I just discovered this sim because of your pic. I went on a Google rampage (well, 20 seconds worth, but still) to find it and it's so much fun.

I just feel that Alex Laferrière (RW) @ 134 if available is a missed opportunity, not because I've actually researched the guy at all, just because it would REALLY mess with Sam if he ended up playing with the Rangers.

Anyway, gonna have fun with this. Thanks!

edit: I love Sam, and will dearly miss him when he stops calling games.

edit 2: I'd love to make a deal with the Wild for #9 if Lundell is still on the board. Not because he's Finnish and I want Kakko to have a buddy but I just have a feeling about this guy. And the Wild need pretty much everything so we're good trade partners most likely... Carolina's first, Georgiev, another prospect and another pick next year? How'd you feel about drafting Lafrenière and Lundell? He's not gonna be our answer at C anytime soon, but no one is next season as things stand. Gotta look further.

You know what’s funny? Two of Laf’s most famous goals (the GWG against Team USA and the gorgeous goal against Sweden in Hlinka Gretzky Cup) occurred when his future teammates (K’Andre and Henriksson) were on the ice.

I would draft Laferriere because he's a good prospect first, the Sam confusion 2nd, and the fact that we share a birthday 3rd. But in that range (3rd round) he is a good one to target.

Give me Jarvis with the Canes pick then Eamon in the 3rd and the rest of the draft is just gravy.

Eamon Powell is easily my favorite prospect outside the first round. That kid would be a great addition to our prospect pool

Opposite direction, but Anaheim has #31 & #36.

That definitely seem interesting, Canes 1st for 31 and 36?

This will be a very hard draft to cover for everyone. Not all teams will have been able to do their homework. Good chance that a number of really good players are available at that range, basically mid 1st round quality. But OTOH, at 24, all of a sudden someone we have sitting much higher up is available.

Someone will blow a fuse over this statement lol, but really, the difference between Eamon Powell and like Jamie Drysdale is not substantial. Not saying that one of them shouldn't be picked top 10 and the other top 40. The devil is in the detail with a defender. Its not a beauty context, its all about getting the job done. RDs are rightfully valued more than LDs since there are fewer than them. Etc etc etc. But in many cases, the fundamentals are just at different levels between different tiers of the draft. A player in a higher tier can skate, stickhandle, play hockey whatever significantly better than a player in a lower tier. In a sense, the premium attached to some of these higher D picks cannot be sustainable for that long. Sure forwards can move a lot too, but its kind of like Cam York vs Zac Jones. For one guy to be picked 60 spots ahead the other -- there reasonably should be a bigger fundamental difference between the two. The later shouldn't be able to overtake the former a few months into their D+1 season.

Powell is of course behind Drysdale, don't get me wrong. But how much behind? Could Powell catch up if he grows and develops really well during 6 months? Connor Zary is never catching up Tim Stutzle. Its hard to say in many cases, between two players, who will have had the better career 15 years down the line. All of a sudden someone like Henriksson carves out a great career and keeps getting better long into his 20s and peaks at a high level. But I can at least guarantee that Henriksson isn't overtaking some of the top young forwards, say a Newhook, in like a couple of years. But with these Ds its much harder. How can that be? In a sense its because the top guys are as good as they ever have been, but the "depth" is catching up. Ultimately that will of course lead to the bar rising for the top guys. But the transition period for scouts can be darn tricky.
