And I think that concept is where we may have some wiggle room (and some debate on here).

Some people would say yes, but figure it will never happen. Some people say no, under any circumstance.

I'm not entirely convinced the Rangers don't fall into the former rather than the latter.

I fall into the category of I'm keeping the pick cause no team would actually offer enough to make me trade it...

That is exactly right. People on message boards can make fantasy proposals all they want, but the reality is that there is no way any team would make a Godfather offer to Gorton. Don't get me wrong, the pick can be had, but it would come with A LOT of blood letting.

There is a market clearing rate for everything. We know that. Time and time again, that lesson is learned. There is no completely untradeable player. The only thing that varies is the cost. And the cost here would need to be astronomical. Like I said, the Flyers came to Quebec with such an offer. Would be sort of poetic justice if Colorado became Philly and the Rangers became Colorado.

shame Mike Ditka isn’t the GM for Ottawa this year

I recently cancelled my EP sub and started a free trial with the Athletic.

Been reading Pornman's 2020-21 organizational rankings. He's up to 13 today (LA). Interested to see where the Rangers land.
The quality of writing in The Athletic is leaps and bounds superior. I only do EP because it's hockey. I actually think the writing kind of sucks.

I wanted to support them because I use them as a reference a lot. But yeah all the juicy stuff is on the Athletic.

I mean, I definitely fall into the latter. If OTT offers 3OA+5OA+Tkachuk/Chabot or LA offers 2OA+Turcotte+2 more top prospects such as, say, Kupari and Björnfot...? I'd probably have to pull the trigger. I just don't see either team ponying up that much.

EDIT: I should also add that that's my head talking. Now that we've won the #1OA and I've had a chance to get to know Lafreniere better, my heart already considers him part of the team. :)

There are a lot of names to throw out there, but some names I like as lower line options:

Reid Valade is a kid I love for later in the draft. He never stops hustling or moving his feet, and he's a damn good skater too so that makes him very projectible as a bottom six energy guy. I think he could fill a role very much in the vein of Hagelin or Fast if he keeps developing. Probably a candidate when you start getting into the fourth round and beyond.

Evan Vierling is an excellent skater, really good understanding of where to be on the ice, very good shot and ability to get the puck to the right person. Probably not the most creative guy in the world, but he's so smart I wouldn't rule out his ability to over-achieve in that area of the game. I project him as more of a Dominic Moore type. Might be more of a second or third round option though.

Daniel Ljungman has a great shot, very good hands. Average skater, but powerful and balanced. Has shown flashes of having higher-end talent, but it's never materialized consistently. He's a guy who hasn't really carved out a full identity yet, but he's a candidate for a bottom six role. Could anywhere from the second to the fourth round.

Parker Ford is another kid who could go later in the draft who projects as more of a bottom six forward who hustles and attacks for everything he gets. I could see him as a guy who plays a role on the PK, helps the team sustain pressure (even if it doesn't always result in points) and provides a spark. Like Valade, he's someone who might be more of a true late round pick.

Agreed, especially on Vierling. Had a serious injury during the season and was moved from a shitty situation in Flint to Barrie who wasn't that much better. Still finished the year above PPG. I think his vision and scoring touch are touch notch to be considered at least a late first. Skating is exceptional and knows how to blow by defenders. Think he needs better defensive awareness, but I have him in the mid 2nd round, ATM.

I have a hard time trading 1st overall straight up for Eichel. The value is in those ELC years, and getting a 23-year old Eichel at 10m a year is nice, but not the best value in that trade

I think in a flat cap for three years, Lafreniere is going to be the best asset to NYR. His ELC would end when the flat cap would hopefully be raised.

Wowza!

Bet there were plenty of scouts watching

Look, whether the board wants to hear or not, the Rangers have not told other teams a flat "No" when it's come up, and most people around the league don't view it as a certainty right now.

Everyone's in near universal agreement it would take a mega-deal to make it happen, but no one outside or within the organization thinks it is a certainty at this time.

I could debate until I'm blue in the face why the Rangers shouldn't go that route, but I'm not the one making that decision.

There's not much more I can say beyond that really.
There is no harm in listening.

I’ve read how Sam Pollock and Bill Torrey took a long walk right before Denis Potvin was drafted. I, like many others, would have loved to be a bug on the wall for that conversation.

Wow, I didn't realize the CHL was already gearing up for pre-season games. That's awesome news as long as they're following all of the necessary safety protocols.

It's been repeated a bunch already, but Lapierre is going to be a really hard talent for teams to pass over in the second half of the first round. The kid just has so much talent, and it's a shame his playing career has already been marred by so many injuries.

the Q is starting normal with preseason underway. but the WHL and OHL are planning to start in December more in line with the NHL and AHL.

I have decided that Holloway and Zary and the guys that I will hope falls to us, have a glimmer of hope, and then won't be there because they got picked shortly before. Similar to Pettersson/Glass.

Those are the ones I have on my "do not draft" list in the 1st so it's interesting to see someone voice the opposite on these two. Could be an interesting debate

Zary I understand, but the Holloway hate mystifies me given a) his profile, b) how highly he was regarded going into this year, and c) what an utter clusterf*** Wisconsin was for EVERYONE on that team including a slew of other top prospects and recent draftees. (Especially since one of those underperformers was our own K’Andre Miller, who then went on to impress everyone who saw him the moment he left the program to join the Rangers.)

He was 15th or so on McKenzie's list so NHL scouts seem to like him a ton.

If he stays healthy for the next month, I expect him to be gone before the Car pick.

Foerster would be a guy who would worry me a lot to draft because I don't like the way he skates. The draft dynasty guy was pointing out among other things how his stick is off the ice and swinging from one side to the other way too much as he's powering up the ice. It's kind of reminiscent of the stick balancing thing that players go through when they first start to play--kind of the stick is used to keep them from falling. He (the draft dynasty guy) was pointing out the same thing kind of with Roni Hirvonen who is agile in small spaces but is another with his stick swinging back and forth as he skates up the ice and it almost looks like when he's moving forward he's stepping on burning coals with bare feet. Kind of waddle skating. It's weird and it's not going to work. Don't draft him either.

I like guys who can skate well--forwards, backwards, laterally with agility--use their edges etc. Foerster has a great shot and good offensive instincts but he's going to be too one dimensional and too much of an issue to develop and if I were to guess IMO he's going to bust.
