There were no issues.

Literally, none.

You talk to anyone who knew this kid, coached him, played with him, talked to him, they ALL raved about him.

That's what has made this entire debacle so shocking. Something, whatever it may be, went very wrong at some point.

Lias should be a cautionary tale when it comes to any prospect. At the end of the day, these are still teenagers we're talking about. Their resume can be impeccable but there's absolutely no way to tell how they'll react along the journey to the NHL. Some kids feel on top of the world but crash back down to reality when they hit their first setback. Some of them never recover. Things only get harder when you're a 19 or 20 year old living in a new country surrounded by people you barely know. It's a very, very hard path to walk.

With Laf most likely to be in the mix for captaincy, does the team just wait another year and give it to LAF?

Also, is this kid giving of an Ovi vibe?

(I don't know which thread to use, lol)

My reading of Lafreneire's scouting report was that he was seen as a tier above Hischier, Johnson, Hughes, but a step below the Ovechkin, Crosby, McDavid level.

More like the Taylor Hall, Nathan Mackinnon, John Tavares level.

Hall is kinda in a class of his own... not as good as Matthews/Tavares/Stamkos/ Mackinnon, but better than busts like Yakupov or even RNH.

I’d say the optimistic takes have Lafreniere at least in the Matthews/Tavares/Stamkos/ Mackinnon range.

WTF? Really?
Let the kid develop, NO reason he gets C for at least 4 years, or longer. Give it to prob 20, maybe 8, but let the high skill guys just do what they do.
And let Laf adapt, he's got enough eyeballs on him already

Maybe I'm wrong but Lias seems like he's in same boat as Dylan McIlrath. Drafted way too high for a limited skillset based on toughness and intangibles. Not a cautionary tale at all, these types of picks this high rarely pan out.

And it seems hard to believe, but we haven't gotten a skater of that quality right out of the draft since Brian Leetch. That's a tier well above Savard and Zubov, and probably Amonte.

The only thing that holds Hall back is that he can't stay on the ice. That kind of applies to Stamkos as well who has missed a ton of time over the last few years.

I'd put MacK in a group above the rest of those guys but below McDavid/Crosby level. Patrick Kane would be in that group too.

I think Laf can end up in that tier right below generational, but everything has to go right. He'll have a hell of a supporting cast to help him out though. He's stepping into a better situation than all of those guys.

Yeah, I think Laf will settle into that general MacK/Kane level

Christ I’d be happy with Huberdeau while you guys are talking about MacKinnon and Kane lol

Is Lafreniere really that legit?

I think there are some comparisons to draw but it's tough to get a clear picture of things. I don't think the Rangers drafted him with the expectation that he was going to top out as a 3rd liner who could be a leader on the team. I think they saw legitimate top-six potential in his game, plus all of those other things. Now whether or not their estimates were correct are another story, but I really don't think they were like "This guy's character is off the charts, let's take him in the top-10." Same goes for McIlrath. I think they genuinely felt like he was going to be a top-4 defensemen who could change the momentum of a game with his physical play.

That being said, my post wasn't at all about his talent. It was about how these are kids that we're selecting in the draft and you never really know how they're going to act as they turn into adults. We're talking about a kid who had an impeccable resume of character and competitiveness who quit at the first sign of adversity. That's a massive curve ball that I don't think anyone could've seen coming.
