Laf's Agent Emilie Castonguay, first woman to represent a #1 pick:

I LOVE to see this.

Who do we think the Rangers will take with their second 1st round pick (assuming they don't trade it away in a deal)? Do they take Gunler, Bisson, Greig, etc.. or do they go for defense and if yes, who do they draft. Do we think that second first round pick could be an impact player for us?
All good questions. It depends where the pick falls. As much as I despise Boston I want them to win so we pick 20-22. It’s a deep draft so you can get a real good player there especially is somebody falls a bit. I think it’s an attractive trade piece to package with something else to get a number 2 C too

That pick was an absolute nightmare for Ottawa.

Zibanejad put up a higher PPG the year immediately following the trade in both the regular season and playoffs than Brassard. In 2014-15 Zibanejad put up 9pts in 12 playoff games (37 pts in 56 regular season games) while Brassard put up 11pts in 19 playoff games (39 pts in 81 regula season games).

Brassard was with Ottawa for 2 years and a single playoff run. Ottawa essentially acquired a playoff rental by trading away someone who outperformed the rental in the short-term and to make matters far worse, who developed into a true 1C who is one of the league's best goal scorers at the moment.

That's brutal asset management. They could have got similar production from a deadline rental without trading away a player who became a franchise center.

They messed with Zib from day one because he came to camp a little over their ideal weight.

After Lafreniere I'd be angling towards Europeans.

If they keep the pick and Reichel is there, I'd be doing backflips.

Laf+Reichel is an A+++++ draft before even getting to the other picks. They can take a goalie with every other selection and I wouldn't care.

Or Kushnutdinov. Or anyone that I don't hate who may fall.

And Laf is like the A++ in that regard?

Reichel is another soft playmaking winger, no thanks ... I'd favor Peterka tbh, but would generally stay away from both.

Reichel would be a tremendous fit as long as they don't rush him. Let him marinate more in the DEL. Unfortunately, I think he is gonna be on a few teams first round radar. Having the Carolina pick at around 23 vs 28-31 would make a huge difference if we want him. he's a young 18. Not getting my hopes up because obviously even if he is available at around 23 the Rangers might take someone else.

I think he would be worth taking a shot with. I understand the desire for a little more grit/physicality but he could be tremendous talent as he continues to develop.

Why? If all things are equal take the north american who is used to the north american game, save yourself a year.

'save yourself a year' should not even be 0.001% of the consideration. the draft is for long term. if the right guy takes a few years to be ready that is part of the process.

I do not think that is the type of player that Gorton, JD or Quinn are looking to bring in

I'm starting to lean Khusnutdinov, myself.

True but could be other ways to find that player. I'm ok with grabbing a really physical middle/bottom six guy if they think waiting until the third round will make it harder to select someone like that. Just please make sure he can somewhat skate.

Really as long as they don't go crazy off the board or take Zary/Holloway at that spot, I'm good.

Even Holloway at that spot I'm not super mad, just annoyed that they will for sure pass on better players at that spot.

Is anyone else worried that they'll overreact to our series against the Canes and have a draft full of McIlraths? I guess it would only matter for the 2nd first rounder since the 3rd rounder is not a premium pick and we're taking Alexis with the first overall.

Yeah Lafreniere and Reichel in one draft might have me even believing in God again. I think Reichel could be taken anywhere from about 15 on. I'm not counting on him being around. I like Peterka though too.

No, however there are players such as Cuylle and Peterson who provide those elements while having skill who could be targets in the 3rd round. @Edge has said Cuylle has been brought up as player the Rangers have an interest in.

Not really.

I think someone like Cullye is definitely on the table, especially if he's there in the third round for them. But other than that, you might be looking at a team that pursues a balanced draft strategy.

Lafreniere is, for intents and purposes, a safe pick. So members can finally associate that term with something positive. As a result, the Rangers could take a pretty big swing with Carolina's pick. I expect there will be some interesting talent that falls to the third, and the Rangers could take a flyer on one of those guys and probably a goalie in the mid-rounds.

The pandemic in the United States does not respect artificial state borders and makes things here way too iffy.

Canadian leagues have a chance this year. I don't think in the United States we're going to have any live hockey for a while. I would expect no AHL or ECHL, no NCAA, no USHL in the coming year. These leagues don't have the resources to set up a bubble. Even with the CHL leagues I would expect some stoppages, some relocations, some rescheduling to get a season in.

So to me your European draft pick has a much better chance of actually being able to play this year compared to his North American counterpart.

I very much doubt the Rangers are going to make their selections (after Laf) based off that.

For our 2nd first rounder I am taking the biggest swing on the board. I don't care what position (besides goalie unless Askarov magically slips) nor do I care specifically what attributes the kid brings to the table.

Take a risk on a kid that has the highest upside and let him marinate for as long as needed.

Talking about not enough grit is ridiculous to me. In a few years, when we would expect this kid to start playing on the team, we have no idea where the strengths and weaknesses of the team might be. Worse case scenario this player is redundant and you can always trade for someone of similar value that fits what the team needs more when the time comes.
