Semantics. The truth is you feel comfortable projecting Lafreniere based on his pedigree but not Newhook.

Well, I feel differently.

But neither of them are proven.

I feel it’s likely that Newhook ends up better than Chytil.

Lafreniere deserves to be selected as high as he should because the only other player to be as good as him in the same league (at draft time) was Crosby. So yes.... I feel INCREDIBLY comfortable in saying that he'll be better than Newhook.

Think you're just picking an argument, now....

Owen Power's name fits him perfectly.

Buys outs are allowed every year, you just have to carry whatever the hit is post buyout.

Amnesty buyout? I doubt we get one.

I mean if they obviously make a move for Lindholm Staal has to go somehow. I don’t think with a buyout we save all of Staals 5 plus million so I’m thinking besides letting go of fast it’s gonna then be hard to sign both ADA and Strome. Strome shouldn’t cost us more than 4-4.25 but who the heck knows

I don't see how he would get more on a QO.

Id give him one and then let him walk or upgrade midseason if necessary (it will be necessary.)

This draft seems pretty weak at the top. Kinda like 2011 ish vibes early on.
2011 has aged well tho. zibby, couturier, schiefele, huberdeau, rnh, landeskog, dougie hamilton, strome, larsson, and brodin. 5-6 1st liners and a top pairing D. no crosby, ovy, mcdavid, eichel, mackinnon tho.

That trio of centers (Zibanejad/Schiefele/Couturier) that went in the middle of the top 10 is impressive.

Depth on defense is real good, though!!

Physically and skillwise I think Chytil has a lot of commonality with Zibanejad. He needs to realize better how strong he is but he's a smooth and powerful skater with very good hand skills. There's still a bit of the kid about him but his two way play improved quite a lot last year and should get better--I thought it interesting that the Rangers used him a lot on the penalty kill against Carolina. That's a positive. He also needs to get better at face-offs. Would I trade him for Newhook? No.

I really think we have to see how Chytil looks as some of these franchise level wings come on board and progress. It would be a waste if we've invested this much time only to bail now.

I still dont see chytil as a C
RW is his best position
And i think he'd end up being a better RW than kravtsov so if im trading anyone for newhook its kravtsov +
I have higher hopes than most tho on henrikson and barron so im not sure i even trade for newhook

I don’t disagree that Lafreniere will be better than Newhook but that doesn’t change that you are projecting. It’s not proven.

I was doing the same when I said I think Newhook will be better than Chytil, that’s all. If you have an argument for keeping Chytil instead of trading for Newhook, fine, but it’s not because anything is proven.

Perhaps you have a different projection of Newhook or Chytil than I do, but then back that up with evidence instead of trying to just end the debate by saying Chytil is “proven.” He isn’t.

Zibanejad as a 21 year old had a 33 point season and Chytil spent the first month of this year in Hartford and ended the shortened NHL season with 23. I want to see some offensive contribution but I'm not swept up in the points thing with Filip yet and FWIW he doesn't get a ton of power play time. His play away from the puck and defensive zone coverage improved a lot from last year to this year but he's still a work in progress. Filip has a lot going for him--he's big and strong and a smooth and effortless skater and he's got excellent skills--he's just still a bit raw but for me he puts everything together his upside will be about what Mika has turned into and having Mika to watch every day should help him towards that. Filip does need to learn how his size better. I think a lot of people don't think Mika is a physical player but he really is even if he's not trying to lay players he does hit and he's burden to defend when he leans in on people which he does all the time. Filip needs to do that a lot more.

There's a pretty decent chance too that he'll start having better linemates to build chemistry with as soon as next year--also I think giving him penalty kill time will be good for him. There is satisfaction and confidence building that can come from doing that well and it says your team is relying on you more.

And the Zibanejad trade is a prime example of what happens when you move on from a forward too soon.

Chytil is still so raw that I feel like we need 2 or 3 more seasons from him before we see what he might become, Mika is a prime example of moving young players too soon. Would be huge mistake to move him to rush the rebuild, we have time to wait it out.

Yeah but again that Ottawa trade was for end of his prime Brassard. What’s being proposed here is for another player with just as much unrealized potential as Chytil.

I think Newhook is a fantastic prospect, I just don’t see any reason the Avs would make this move, they have no need for Chytil. I think he’s still a really raw kid, a bit of a man child still where you let him develop in the nhl and figure it out. You have capital in Buch, Strome, Carolina 1st, maybe even Ada to fill out roster.

I don’t either, i was posing a hypothetical.

Forced to defend against the accusation that it was a terrible idea.
