There are a few surprises in the Black Book - Jarvis, Persson, Robins all ranked way higher than the consensus.

Jarvis was kind of mid teens to early 20's. Robins I was thinking of as a 3rd/maybe 4th. Ridley Grieg as probably a 2nd and Persson didn't really seem to be much on the radar. He's a sleeper for them.

But really I think consensus from scouting sites is all over the map here. Almost anyone could pick their top 31 and they'll be doing alright if 18 or 19 actually do go in the first round.

The Rangers are notorious for not always going with consensus. This year might be somewhat different in a lot of ways though--as leagues all over the world shut down early and playoffs didn't materialize. As well I'm doubting there is going to be a combine. There will probably be interviews though--those can be done easily enough.

So getting away from hypothetical lottery wins and the guys we know the Rangers like.

I am trying to figure out who the Rangers dark horse candidates are.

Jarvis might be on there
Amirov might be a candidate

Strange that I hear nothing about Quinn from the Rangers. You'd think he'd come up like Mercer, or other guys potentially in that range. But nothing.

I might be misremembering, but wasn’t Kravtsov a guy that wasn’t mentioned much, if at all, by them before the draft?

That would be amazing

Kreider - Strome - Buchnevich would be one of the better third lines in the league.

Lemieux - Barron - Gauthier could be decent.

I don't think i want to pay Strome and Buch to play on the 3rd line though. Bad enough Kreider will be there but i guess you can switch him and Laf out to give them both chances in the top 6.

Jarvis and Schneider are two kids I can definitely see going higher if the right team comes up in the draft.

I honestly think Jarvis goes higher if he's coming out of the US program (never thought I'd say that).

Everyone likes him, but not everyone views the skill set as being up their with the top guys. But I think he's going to be in some conversations once you get past some of the very top guys.
Sounds like Joel Farabee

Not too much said there. He was discussed around here, and cited as someone who, from a skill standpoint, was near the top of the class. But he wasn't a guy who came up much from people near the Rangers.

They really liked the American forwards that year. But, when you have Kravstov as the second best forward in the draft, it doesn't really matter if you have Tkachuk third, Farabee fourth and Wahlstrom fifth.

I seem to recall photos of Kravtsov visiting NYC and posing with a nude, painted red white and blue lady. Could have sworn that was pre draft and looked at as a tip-off by some. Am I misremembering that?

Frankly, there's a lot of that of Farabee in Jarvis.

I think Farabee had slightly better straight-away speed, maybe utilized his linemates a bit more and had slightly bigger frame, but Jarvis has the advantage on shooting, relentlessness and edgework.

As I said to someone the other day, Jarvis might be the victim of a little bit of a stigma against under-sized WHL kids with high motors and impressive point totals, who don’t necessarily score among the top prospects on a skill by skill checklist.

So what seperates going 15th from going 10th?

Probably offensive ceiling, position and skill level.

If you him as a RW, and more of complimentary offensive player, that probably pushes him into the teens.

If you view him as a potential second line center, that pushes him up the rankings.

There are some questions about how much is him busting his ass and over-achieving, versus how his skill level compares with the top tier of forward prospects in the draft. His shot percentage this year was unusually, and probably unsustainably high. Does that come back down to earth?

Jarvis rates as good to very good in most areas, but he's not a kid who comes off as being super high IQ, or a physical speciman, or a guy who has blazing blow by you speed against capable defensemen (he's incredibly shifty though), or amazing hands, etc.

On skill, he probably rates closer to guys who typically go in the second half of the first round. But he outworks most of his competition, and gets every drop out of his attributes, so his results are closer to guys projected to go in the first half.

So how do you assess his tools compared to higher competition levels? How far can hard work carry you? What type of NHL player does that make? Is he a center? Are you looking at a Brayden Point? A Marc Savard? Is he a winger? Are you looking at a nice support winger with a high motor and the ability to contribute some points? Are you looking at Zach Parise? Are you looking at Travis Konecny? That's what some teams are going to be debating.

Everyone likes the kid. The question is do you take a likable and easy to root for 20 goal/45 point player ahead of some of the other options that might still be on the table? Or do you believe you have a guy who honestly could be a higher-end option that everyone looks back and says, "Crap, I should've known this was the kid to bet on."

Yes he was posing with one of those ladies from Times Square lol

It was quite the photo

Ok if we don't win number 1 and Laf/Byf/Stuz go 1-3 we should come away with one of...
Drysdale
Perfetti
Rossi
Raymond
Sanderson
Askarov
Holtz
Lundell
Quinn
Jarvis
Gotta figure Sanderson, Drysdale definitely get taken top 10. maybe even Askarov or a Schneider.
Will the Rangers pull another Lias and go off the board or be smart this time and select a Quinn or Jarvis or if by some luck Perfetti/Rossi

I think the last 3 have the highest odds of still being on the board when the Rangers pick - Lundell, Quinn, and Jarvis. I'll add Mercer to that list as well.

So that might make an interesting poll for this board.

Shit good call forgot about Mercer. Would definitely put him in that 9-13ish range. I know most Ranger fans wanting a center would take Lundell over him but I think its close.

These are the guys who end up becoming difference makers.

There are a ton of players who may be supremely skilled but lack that drive to really take over, some call it the "it factor". He has it in spades and the rest of the skill set is pretty high end. Not upper echelon bring you out of your seat dynamic like say, Lucas Raymond, but more than enough to be a true impact player.

Hes a personal favorite of mine and I wouldn't blink if the team took him with their top pick. As things stand, he may not even make it to us. I'd be very surprised if he isn't on the radar for them with their top pick if it ends up in the low teens.

I can't say I'd bat an eye if he went top-10 or if the Rangers grabbed him.

Couple questions for people who follow prospects much closer than me.

A. Who would you guys say is the most polarizing prospect?
B. Who is your guys sleeper, boom or bust type

Most polarizing would probably be Kravtsov now that the ship has pretty much sailed on Lias.
Boom or busts would be guys like Barron and Henriksson, could be solid middle-six guys or never make the league.

Meanwhile guys like K'Andre Miller and Nils Lundkvist could be the next Seth Jones and Nick Lidstrom-lite, or they could turn into Brady Skjei and Anton Stralman-lite.
