A good litmus test for Flyers fans:

- if they think Giroux sucks
AND/OR
- if they think Raffl is terrible

.....It’s likely that their ability to understand the game of hockey is limited at best
the lack of Ghost/Hagg is disturbing

Looking at the players the Flyers will need to expose to meet the minimum requirements.

Seattle Expansion Draft Simulator - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

JVR meets them already. Laughton would need to play 6 more games, and get an extension. Raffl would need 3 games plus an extension. NAK needs to play 21 more games.

Hagg needs to play 9 more games. If he doesn't leave, Ghost needs to play in 23.

Sandstrom qualifies as a 2021 RFA.

what scares me about the D and Goalie situations are injury potential, and nobody to expose. Hopefully we can sign some cheap vets to additionally fill the ED requirements.

I really hate the expansion draft. It's bullocks that the LVGK are exempt too. Be glad when this BS is over.

I'm not obsessed with size, but as Martel showed, there is a minimum size below which the probability of NHL success approaches zero (in a league with 400+ forwards, there's always an extreme outlier or two). And young undersized players often struggle for a year or two before they get strong enough and experienced enough to handle the NHL.

Fourth lines are generally energy lines for a reason, they don't get regular shifts so they're not going to have the chemistry of a line that plays 14-16 minutes a line, and they don't have three skilled players, so they're unlikely to generate much offense (A player who is talented enough to play a regular role in the top 9 will soon be in the top 9). So HCs want players who hit the ice flying, willing to forecheck and hit and cause turnovers and make things happen, not patiently set up scoring chances for non-existent scorers.

That doesn't not describe Frost or Brink. Farabee could play a 4th line role once he filled out, as could Lindblom, but why would you waste their talents there?

Third lines are often compromises, look at Goodrow - Gourde - Coleman, Gourde is a skilled center who has accepted more of a forechecking role and thrived, the other two are career bottom six types:
Gourde, pp/60 ES, 2.65, 2.08, 1.49, hits/60, 2.38, 4.59, 5.00
Coleman, pp/60 ES, 1.38. 1.59, 1.69, hits/60, 12.26, 11.80, 12.13
Goodrow, pp/60 ES. 1.69, 1.23, 1.54, hits/60, 8.81, 9.54, 10.74

for comparison purposes:
Raffl, pp/60 ES, 1.39, 1.46, 1.70, hits/60, 5.62, 7.91, 6.61
NAK, pp/60, ES 1.95, hits/60, 13.19
Laughton, pp/60, 1.41, 1.76, 2.62, hits/60, 9.28, 8.47, 10.28
Pitlick, pp/60, 1.64, 1.18, 1.76, hits/60, 7.15, 9.67, 11.15

Frost, pp/60 ES 1.61, hits/60, 1.08
Bunnaman, pp/60 ES 0.62, hits/60, 9.01
Grant, pp/60 ES 1.88, 1.40, 1.79, hits/60, 5.83, 9.73, 5.20
Thompson, pp/60 ES, 1.30, 1.28, 1.14, hits/60, 9.94, 6.10, 9.50

See I look at this and see Laughton and nak and I wonder if that would actually be a really great spot for frost to learn to play at an nhl pace and initiate contact.
For me the fourth line is aggressive on the forecheck and able to disrupt plays in the neutral zone. These guys aren't untalented it's just that they don't have scoring as a primary skill set.
It was pretty frustrating watching the playoffs and wanting them to work a cycle but this just isn't a team that is built that way. You have to allow your talent to shine and not try to fit square pegs into round holes

I sense that the Flyers will make a major move in the next two weeks. Their surplus on the wing along with Gostisbehere being on the block puts them in the position of being able to do a deal or two. Gaudreau and Lucic? for JVR, Laughton, and Gostisbehere? Probably not but something major will go down.

Add to this Elliot signed to a 2 year deal to qualify. Seems workable. Don't have to trade anyone but if they offer something favorable then sure.

Wow, Patrick would need to play 40 games to meet the requirement. While I really want him to play, I wonder if they keep him out half the season so he's automatically covered?

I thought it as well. Maybe. Or he gets shut down for anything. It just screams can we pull this off type of thing.

Edit not advocating for this. Just that I thought it.

I would think the Flyers want him to play if he can, and Patrick would want to as well. It would be a hard sell to sign him to a contract this offseason and then prevent him from trying to push his next contract higher by sitting him for the year. I also assume that he would have to be on LTIR at the end of the season, ie, no sitting him until he can only play 39 games and letting him finish it out.

I guess if we love a player, we should trade them because they'll win elsewhere?

Just f***ing fix this f***ing team. Hagg is a step in the opposite direction of said fixing... f*** me it pisses me off so much...

If Haag was a 6-7 D man I wouldn't care too much about this, but you know that is not his role. He is a 4-6 guy on this team and that is putrid

If he plays 30 games and wasn't protected, Seattle could still pick him. Players don't need to meet these requirements in order to be eligible to be picked. Teams just need to make sure they expose 2 F, 1 D and 1G who meet them.

Minimum Exposure Requirements

Teams must expose a minimum number of players that meet the following criteria for selection in the upcoming Expansion Draft:
Position#Criteria
Forwards2
  • under contract in 2021-22, AND
  • played in 40 or more NHL games last season, OR
  • played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two seasons
Defense1
  • under contract in 2021-22, AND
  • played in 40 or more NHL games last season, OR
  • played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two seasons
Goalies1
  • under contract in 2021-22, OR
  • who’s contract is expiring & is an RFA in 2020-21

He was the #7 in the first half of the season, and the #6 in the second half. He hasn't been near the top 4 since Hak was fired.

In the playoffs, the top 4 averaged four+ minutes more at ES than the three 3rd pairing dmen.

I'm pretty sure he is only exempt if he misses the last 60 games of the 20-21 season.
