His "lack of defense" just doesn't make any sense to me. Anyone that has watched him consistently knows that's he's actually pretty good defensively. Far better than Krug in his own zone.

He's looked weak at times but it's mainly due to injury, he's had mobility issues. If Karlsson can get healthy he is a formidable force. His speed and puck handling skills are top tier, there is no one who is as good when healthy.

With that said, that contract looks scary long term.

Guess this dispels the rumor that was floating around about his wife being home sick and wanted to get back to the Ottawa area.

Yes I know he was hurt in the playoffs, quite seriously. In fact I thought the Sharks should have kept him out of the last 2 games he was so ineffective. But even when he's healthy he's not a good or even decent defender.

Disagree I think hes solid. I judge guys who are that good offensively a little different mind you. Think of all the praise being heaped on Krug's defense this postseason by our fans yes it was good but its from a different lense given what he brings offensively and what we saw from him 2018 playoffs.

That blue line is great Karllson/Burns/Vlasic/Braun/Dillon. But they aren't young and that contract sort of kills them.

Can SJ even afford to pay Meier and Pavelski and give Joe 1 mil/1 year the rest being vet minimum/ELCs?

And thats assuming the 2 Joes play ball who knows what Pavelski and Thornton want.

GOOOOOOODDDDBBBYYYEEEE LeBlanc+Donskoi+Nyquist.

Great team to trade with IMO. Give me a Gryz+Heinen plus for Dillon and one of Meier or LeBlanc. You can plan the freakin parade next year immediately if we do that.

Lot of negative off ice chatter about ROR and Duchense. Think they proved a lot of that wrong this playoffs.

But its great to pay character guys who are teh slowest in the NHL like Backes instead.
Exactly. I can't believe there are people here that want Backes to stay. Same with Kevan Miller. It's insane.

For those mentioning Ferland, how about Nick Ritchie? Four years younger, scored at over .5ppg this season and seems to be on the outs with the Ducks. I'm not pining for either player, Josh Anderson is the only guy I really would love to have that plays that physical style of game. But if we are going to add someone like that, Ritchie is younger, shouldn't cost much to acquire and is much cheaper salary wise than Ferland. He was a high draft pick and has some untapped skill.

I would hate to see the Bruins overpay Ferland.

Reason he's been traded 2x?

He was traded by Ottawa simply because they wanted to shed all contracts, not because of him personally. You also have no idea whether or not CBJ has extended an offer.

I'd take Duchene in a heartbeat. Instead, we're saddled with the useless Backes for another two years.
If you actually think that Duchene trade was a simple contract dump you're naive. Also, if Columbus were interested in retaining him then they'd be vocal about it and from what I've read, they seem content to let him walk.

Sorry but Matt Duchene is the antithesis of what a Bruins player is

I still look at Bennett. Physical, likes the rough stuff after whistles. Fights.

And I still expect him to round out his offensive game. If all it took was one of Gryz or Clifton, I'd put a lot of thought into it.

hes also 8th at best on the depth chart, and at 2.5 thats a contract you move 10/10 times.

same goes for Moore at 2.75

Thats an easy 5.25 freed up

I don't agree that he's 8th at best, but that's fine if you think so. If they move Backes, they can comfortably fit both of those guys. I'd rather keep them both. We've watched defensemen drop like flies year after year now. I want as many NHL caliber D as we can fit

I mentioned this in another thread but I would absolutely kick the tires on Matt Duchene.

Marchand, Bergeron and Krejci are all over 30. Marchand and Bergeron both battled injuries in the playoffs and Krejci has had his share of issues in the past. When 3 of your 4 most important players are over 30, you’re bound to have injury problems.

It’s rare for a point per game center to hit free agency, especially one in his prime. It’s an opportunity I wouldn’t let go by without seeing if there is mutual interest.

Yes, and CBJ is in cap hell. An intriguing proposition.

Sweeney indicates he's not buying out Backes, and apparently suggests #42 will have to compete for fourth line minutes. I still think a buyout would not have been a bad idea. Not sure any club would bite on a trade.

FWIW, I believe they should explore dealing DK#46. Think Johansson is gone. Move Kevan Miller.

Sweeney may again look to the farm to fill critical roles. It didn't work out very well this past season. Not until the final quarter of the season, anyway.

Miller is often injured and has fallen way behind others on the depth chart. With Lauzon and Vaak coming up, you have to deal him. Clearing Miller & Backes clears $8 million. That's money that can be used to bring in an impact player.

Yeah, I wasn’t too keen on Miller before this injury. You have to wonder what his skating will be like coming back from a twice shattered knee.

Why is CBJ in cap hell?

And it's been stated before, sending Backes to Providence saves the Bruins more cap then buying him out. $1,050,000 versus $333,333

11 million for Karlsson. Given his injury history and lack of defense I can't believe any team would be that stupid to sign him for so much money & for so much time. Torey Krug's agent must be drooling over the prospects for his client. I don't buy that he would take less to stay here, this is going to be his only chance to hit the UFA jackpot. Even if by some miracle he takes less to stay, Karlsson's contract has set the market for offensive defensemen & Krug will get more money than he would have if the benchmark was lower.

But -- I believe the B's will sign Torey to a team friendly but significant $$ upgrade.

You never know, though. With the Karlsson signing, Krug's value has never been higher.

BTW, given Sweeney's comments, Backes will be back haha, and DK isn't going anywhere, either. So, I don't know. Matt Duschene (sp) sounds right to me.

I just hope Sweeney doesn't sit on his hands. Nothing crazy, but improvements are plainly necessary. And I would at least experiment with breaking up Patrice & Brad, or placing #88 on line 2.

He's never been known as a strong defensive player. He's been injured a bit too. Remember Cooke stomping on his Achilles heel (sic)? What a guy!
