2019 Redraft: Mo Seider goes #2OA

I would say Zegras 2, Seider 3

Its an unpopular opinion on a Wings forum for sure but I'm with you that it's at least very close.

I lean Seider slightly because I don't think Zegras will be a top 10 C in the league...I see his ceiling more in the Aho/Hintz/Larkin/Zibanejad/Miller/Barzal sort of tier, which is a 1C for which the blueprint to build a cup winner around is extremely tough and has only happened two out of 18 seasons post lockout (Boston 2011, St Louis 2019). Meanwhile Seider's ceiling is top 3-5 dman in the league.

However Zegras *could* exceed my expectations and it's not unrealistic to think he might. If Zegras at all becomes more of a Pettersson/Eichel/Hughes tier center, then Zegras would be above Seider IMO.

I would take Seider 100/100 times over Zegras now and in the future. I'd rather have a 6'4 smooth skating/long reach/skilled/punishing RH #1D over a center who may be pushed to wing once McTavish and Carlsson are established at C. No slight to Zegras, I just value the Seiders so highly.

Zegras is in the tier above mentioned and IMO Seider will remain in the Pietrangelo tier for another decade. Personally I value having a minute munching D come playoff time and the fact we'll have two of them... 🤌

OK, but why are we spotting Zegras "if he gets better" and Seider just what... he's already peaked as a blueliner at age 22? The position that historically players get better at with time and experience more than any other position.

Seider came into the NHL on a lottery team, immediately was the #1 defender, plays all 164 games in 2 seasons, scores 92 points on an anemic offense, and is a tremendous physical presence and 2-way player. He does it all and did so with very little help while cutting his teeth against NHL competition.

What Seider has accomplished on the Wings is nothing short of exceptional. The start to his career is better than Hedman, who took 4 seasons to find his footing the way Seider did. We have one of the top young players at a premier position and he should only continue to look better and better as he gets more help from his partners, the team scores more goals, and the goaltending improves.

Seider is going to be Norris finalist sooner than later. So I'm sorry, if you're over here flipping a coin between him and Zegras, I'm asking you to turn in your gun and badge, you're reckless and you're going to get somebody hurt! You hear me? You're off the case!

also it's not really his fault since lots of guys won't be as good as Carlsson but now that Anaheim has him Zegras probably won't even be the 1C on his own team long term

I prefer to do my trolling on a lake, but I suppose they don't have kokanee in Michigan. Not anymore at least.

The same guy that introduced salmon to the Great Lakes planted kokanee in inland lakes including Cass Lake, so the state record kokanee was caught in the Clinton River. The other wild part of the story is that they were considering striped bass in the Great Lakes as well. That would have been pretty epic.

Because I'm telling the guy I replied to that I can rationalize and understand his point, and frankly it's wayyyyy you early to take a "2019 redraft" too seriously at this stage, anyway.

Great pick for sure.

Anyone else kind of bummed that Hughes isn't a bust? I like Seider but presuming we get the top pick and land Hughes, the franchise is looking much better with a top centerman.

I was originally expecting Seider to be a Mattias Ohlund-esque number 1/2 guy that puts up 30 points and lays down the hammer. After we saw Seider in Rogle nobody on this board should be surprised to see he became a player that's in the argument for top 10 D in his first two seasons.

Taking Zegras over Seider is like taking Texas Pete over Valentina Black. Spicy take indeed.

Zegras is heading more towards a wing...

It's either:

Zegras - Carlsson - X
or
Zegras - McTavish - X

No, he's becoming my favorite American player and possibly one that unseats Pat Kane for my favorite American to watch all time.
