Why? Broberg would be perfect, Guy is so damn good every-time I have watched him play.
People thought Sergachev had rocks for brains also.
I would be completely fine with broberg, excited actually.
At #10 I want a forward, if we trade down the pick then sure, take Broberg.

Broberg at 10 is a reach, other players appear to be better right now. BPA over positional needs.

I feel like a broken record, but I’ll say again - I feel most confident in our Swedish and American scouts. So any of Broberg, Soderstrom, Boldy, Caufield, Zegras, etc - I’ll be a pretty happy camper and feel pretty confident about it.

As for Benning’s quotes, he’s talked about listening to offers on picks in each of his drafts in his tenure here. Hasn’t happened yet. There’s always a first, but I have the feeling he’ll end up standing pat at 10th overall.

I don't think the front office's approach to drafts is materially different from anyone else's, and all GMs listen to offers on picks and rarely trade them. Benning just seems to talk too much.

He seems like a guy who can’t really stand a silence, or dead air - and he just feels the need to fill it, even if what he says to do so doesn’t always make sense.

I’m way more scared of Benning trying to trade up than trade down.

Benning had an interview today and his first remark when asked about possibilities at 10 was “if we keep the 10th pick”

God save us
Give me a f***ing break. If you think they are trading their pick when they host the draft you should delete your account

Serg does have rocks for brains

Broberg is a very good hockey player with great potential.

He has good potential, but he's like the Jake Virtanen of defensemen. He's biggest weakness is supposedly his hockey IQ. Additionally, he's ranked in the mid-teens. The team should draft BPA which is Newhook, Krebs or Boldy in the drafting position we are in.

I take Caufield or Newhook at 10 if available ainec. Over pod or zegras and possibly cozens.

Can you explain why you have Newhook over Zegras and Cozens? I get the Caufield hype because he's the best scorer in the draft, but I'm unsure where the Newhook hype comes from?

LL traded the 9th overall pick when NJ was hosting the draft in 2013. There is precedent.

Hi, on Zegras yes I did say that, last year and even a bit at the start of this year, he seemed to have a hard time getting anything accomplished. As the year went on he began to look stronger and more confident and started winning battles and making plays at a much higher rate. Because of his outstanding vision and work ethic, the upside is enough for me to gamble on, despite deficiencies in his shot, strength and top end speed.

Boldy is just really well-rounded scoring winger, with the combination of size, elite shot, skill and vision, and without any deficiencies (really good defensively, skates well especially for his size). If you like Timo Meier or Filip Forsberg he's that kind of player. Cozens is good, it's just that I don't think there's any chance he's a top line type player. He's a skate and shoot player first and foremost but he's not as good at it compared to say Podkolzin, and probably has less playmaking ability as well. Byram I've never loved as a prospect, a lot of points come from being very aggressive positionally for someone who's not an elite skater, and he's porous defensively against junior players. Very good offensive skills and instincts however.

Newhook and Dach are close, I've just had very mixed viewings on Dach, I don't know if he is as high end a playmaker as some think, but has terrific hands. His engagement is also inconsistent. Seems to get injured a lot. So he could be a future Getzlaf but you're taking on some enigma there. Newhook showed his game is helped by playing with better players, seems to have a real quickness and creativity to his ability to make plays which you love for the next level. Great shot, great wheels, combined with his hands and mind I think he has top line upside even if there's a bit of sloppiness occasionally.

I view Zegras as a top end skater. Shot and strength I agree, but skating is a definite asset for him.

Somewhat agree on Podkolzin and Cozens, though I think Cozens has 1st line upside.

Byram I really like. He's not an elite skater, true. I don't think he's porous defensively.

What do you think about Newhook's consistency? Or, how he uses his linemates? Let's not allow a short sample to completely overturn the critique on this player. Next to Zegras, he's the only player that I think compares in terms of creativity, skill and speed. Yet, I question his decision making.

Dach will go early. The potential is worth the enigma for some team.

Funny how HFBoards was convinced the Canucks would screw this pick up by picking for need. Yet, the entire management team is going off about taking the best player available and NOT picking for need (unless both line up).

Juolevi?

Feels like our management team wants Newhook, Krebs, or Cozens.

Speed and skill. I think Zegras can be added to that group, while Boldy, Caufield and Dach would be outside of that group.

Boldy would be an absolute perfect pick. Would fit our needs and be BPA. Fingers crossed!!

Boldy is not a top end skater. That's something that holds him back from being the perfect pick. Well, perfect in terms of the team's apparent wish list.

Of the names mentioned, only Newhook and Zegras combine speed, creativity and skill at a high end level. All other regularly discussed options are inferior in one of those aspects by comparison... to my eye anyway.

Like Jim said yesterday. If we keep the pick we are going to get a really good player and another piece to the puzzle.

Free Agency is where Jim Benning head is at. The Family wants to make the playoffs. there is a minimum of $5 million dollars sitting there in two playoff games. They need the money for the winery .

3 weeks and 1 day away !

I'm hearing more and more chatter between season ticket holder buddies that they've been told there is a big reveal happening on draft day.

Speculation is, The twins will come out to announce our selection while wearing the new jerseys.

This is just one scout's opinion, but Craig Button was on 1040 and rated Zegras ahead of Newhook. He warned not to overrate Newhook's upside.

With that said, I get the hype. He certainly has the skills package to be a top 10 calibre pick, but the question is whether he will end up being better than a Zegras or Cozens etc.

I'd argue that opinion is probably in the minority and Horvat has higher value. Especially given his contract. But I've been debating Marner vs. Matthews with my Leafs buddies and do not wish to rehash that here, so will leave it at that.

Yea Horvat most definitely does not have more value. Just not in the same class of player.

Horvat for 4th overall if Byram is there is something I'd probably do. Provided we get a Zegras/Krebs/Newhook at pick #10.

But zero chance it happens as Benning needs to make the playoffs next year.

there will definitely be a new jersey reveal.

In the end I'm happy with 4-5 players. It gets really interesting in my opinion, however, if the draft goes as follows (in some order):

1. Hughes
2. Kakko
3. Byram
4. Turcotte
5. Dach
6. Zegras
7. Cozens
8. Boldy
9. Krebs

I think the Canucks are hoping one of those guys in the 5-9 range falls. If they don't, you end up with a choice between Podkolzin, Caufield, Newhook, and one of the defensemen. I'll be very interested to see what they do if the order falls that way. This is where I suspect they might explore trading the pick outright.

And actually looking at this right now I think this might be the most likely top 9.
