Okay not a bad draft for the Jets. Really good first day, great second day, mediocre third day. Here are all of their selections....
1 (11) OT: Mekhi Becton (Louisville)
2 (59) WR: Denzel Mims (Baylor)
3 (68) S: Ashyton Davis (California)
3 (79) Edge: Jabari Zuniga (Florida)
4 (120) RB: La'Mical Perine (Florida)
4 (125) QB: James Morgan (Florida International)
4 (129) OG: Cameron Clarke (Charlotte)
5 (158) CB: Bryce Hall (Virginia)
6 (191) P: Braden Mann (Texas A&M)
*Also will count 4-year pro CB, Quincy Wilson, here. They traded their last pick for him and he'll be a good backup or third string.*
The Becton pick is as good as it gets for the spot, need and player. Think he really will thrive under Williams' scheme. Love the trade back and still was able to pick up a big time WR in Mims. Can easily be a top WR if not middle of this coming season then next for sure. I love the pickup of Davis. He's a freak athlete, did anyone see the hurdles clip? He plays safety, corner and is a return man. Solid pick up. I like the pick for Edge, but not necessarily the player. Wanted Weaver here, but Zuniga has some explosiveness to his start-up. We'll see what happens with him under Williams. Perine pick confuses me because he's not that fast, but he is really physical and can find the seams. Not sure how he'll develop, but he could be a backup some day. I like the Morgan pick, unlike most. I think that he can become a very solid QB some day (maybe like a Fitzpatrick). I don't think it'll be for the Jets if Darnold sticks around and is the obvious choice. He does have accuracy issues, so he'll need some time. A lot of the analysts were hyping the Clarke pick. Hopefully they are right, I don't have any insight on him. Most see him as a guard in the NFL. Love the Hall pick, great snag from a falling player in the draft, similar to Bless Austin last draft. Love to see what he can do if healthy. As for punter, sure, whatever. Seems like Edwards is not returning. FWIW, the analysts on ESPN were saying that he could be a pro-bowler and a chance to be a top-5 punter in the league. I will always commend a GM to flip picks for actually proven talent/depth, so a 6th rounder (No. 211) for a 4- year depth corner is a solid trade.
I'd give the Jets a B for this crop. Love the first 3 picks (Becton, Mims, Davis) as well as trading for Wilson and health of Hall, but I'm not sold yet on the others.
1. Thanks for the recap and solid commentary
2. Generally agree, I was a tad more generous, although little of this is a given in advance of how things turn out.
My grade is a high of A-B+
I like/love most of what was done.
I too have reservations on the Zuniga and Perine selections.
Not to suggest they are useless, just that I'm so damn disgusted w/this OL, I would have looked for more there, even tho our GM has obtained fresh blood, I'm not sure how good they are, but they can't be worse than the crap crop of recent seasons.
As for Morgan, he fills a niche.
Supposedly his heart was set on GB, and I wonder what their depth is at that position after Rogers and the heir apparent with this draft.
If a combo of events happens, we may be able to upgrade going forward.
Let's say this kid applies himself.
We know he's got the arm, but what about the rest?
Let's say he advances, but is not can't miss.
I could see Packers looking at Rogers as a #2 since Rogers I give 2-3 yrs max.
Now we should develop a guy behind Darnold, but we can get a yr out of Rogers before flipping him for a 3rd + if he's developed enough.
I'm sure some vets will also garner a look.
Like I said, we just need to be extra careful with our better starters, taking care not to have excess/avoidable injuries on special teams.
