Not counting Abruzzese who's a year and half older, Newhook is the best freshman in the NCAA with 36 pts in 30 games.

That was he of the most incredible performances I’ve seen from Byram last night. As you can hear in the clip it was 5-2 when he scored that goal in the beginning of the third and they went on to win 6-5. He was the catalyst for that whole thing. He desperately wanted the puck on his stick that period and made plays every shift. His hands don’t get enough credit, he has so much puck skill. He also was rock solid in a late game PK.

Those are the things people know of him by now for the most part. It’s the type of emotional leader he is that you have to see to understand. When the games get physical and heated it seems to fire him up. Calgary was taking cheap shots this game especially on their best forwards. There was a bit of a line scuffle at the end of the game because Calgary decided to elbow one of the forwards after the final horn and Byram went in to challenge him. The official escorted Byram off the ice and the camera followed to show him by the door greeting every player. Each and every one of them got the biggest bro hug greeting. Just a little example of why the coach says he drives their room. Byram’s competitiveness reminds me of MacKinnon and he’s driven by emotion. He’s always good or normal days but can elevate his game to take it over and impact his entire team when it matters and for that I believe he is a special player.

thanks for the wonderful write up! I like to hear he has a similar competitive nature to MacKinnon.

I love that we have the calm cool collected dman in Makar, who very seldom shows any flashes of emotion and that he will soon be complimented by the firey emotional dman, both who seem to thrive under pressure.

No high end skill tho.

If that’s the point you want to make, he’s made a number of plays lately that are better demonstrations of “high end skill” than a fluttery, short angle shot that snuck past a WHL goalie that didn’t have his post covered.

That's not an example of a skilled play? He had the awareness to recognize the goalie was just barely off his post and slickly snapped a split second shot top shelf after successfully carrying the puck to the ozone.

Still think Mutala could prove to be our best value pick out of the 2019 draft.

Kid continues to carry the corpse of the Tri-City Americans on his back and keep them competitive in some games they have no business hanging around in.

For @tigervixxxen or anyone that catches many Eagles games...

How would you have rated Kaut’s NHL-readiness a week ago? How about Bowers’?

Having seen Kaut get a couple of games, how close or far would you say Bowers is from being useful depth?

After last night's game, Byram has caught up to his point production from last year.

Due to the WCJs Byram has 11 less games remaining on his schedule than he did last year at this point. So I seriously doubt he matches the remaining 10 goals 11 assists down the stretch to match his regular season totals last season. But he does have 12 games left, maybe if he keep rolling like this he can make it close.

I've always really liked the Mutala pick but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting more excited about him. What he is doing on a very very bad Tri-City team is very impressive.

I wrote a tome about Kaut in his thread on the prospect board a couple weeks ago if you want to see what I said about him then. But to reiterate I thought he was ready and showed all the things we have seen thus far. Good on the boards and forechecking, defensively responsible, makes smart plays and can pop in some offense. At nearly 100 AHL games is the perfect timing for an opportunity. I don’t think he’s gonna get much more out of the AHL at this point. He will need time to get fully comfortable and adjusted to NHL game but those things will occur in the NHL.

As far as Bowers, he’s not quite there yet. I would not have been against a callup and think some NHL time would benefit him take the next step in his development as he’s also a smart player, good defensively. He could get stronger on the puck and more consistent defensively. I’ve liked his offense with driving to the net and being a net front pest/threat. The hot streak he was on has subsided and they put him in a more 3rd line role with a bit less special teams time than Kaut who was also in more of a 2nd line role. So to answer the Q, he’d be useful now. Ideally I’d transition him early next fall I guess.
