it’s about the players. One guy gets it like in the NBA, you have to quarantine that entire team and staff for 14 days. You can’t finish a season like that.

Yep, not to mention the staff/arena workers and you can't control what these guys do off the field either, who they come in contact with at a bar at night, etc. Anyone could unknowingly be a vector.

What are sports stations gonna do with nothing to show? There's maybe 2 or 3 days in the whole year with no sporting events at all, which is manageable through Top 10s and stuff like that, but this might go on for a couple months.

Time for the PBA to hit the spotlight.

I've been wondering that myself tbh...and it's certainly a small concern in the grand scheme but for the next 2-4 weeks at least you pretty much have to suspend all sports shows now that the NBA, NHL, NCAA, MLB and MLS have all gone dark. Vince with the XFL will probably be the only thing that'll try to swim against the grain and play games in empty stadiums cause it's Vince, and it is a vaccum where some non-mainstream sport can get viewers. Or you'll get even more stupid NFL offseason/draft previews.

Lost season for us anyway so it’s whatever with ten or so games to go, but it really sucks for the teams that are in the mix to have to wait. Philly for sure riding a hot streak coming back in a month or two could just ruin their chances at making a legit run

There wont be any coming back in a month or two

Unless my some grace of God this blows over before a month passes by - the season will be cancelled

No way they let this affect next season when it doesnt have to. Let the season sit with an unprecedented reason for cancellation and start fresh next year. No need to drag these problems over to next year just to make everyone happy.

Trust me - major sports fans will have a lot to talk about even with no active sports games

It may get slightly monotonous at times but the ability to discuss the future seasons as well as discuss what was happening during these seasons is still there.

I don’t disagree with the idea of just like forget the season and move on with the next one but I can imagine player unions and owners would be pissed unless they get compensation for it. Lots of missed box office revenues, players lose bonuses, all sorts of issues with just cancelling it outright. That being said I don’t think it’s off the table yet but a last resort for certain. I don’t think anyone wants to do that. Playoffs in July would be funny though.

I honestly wasn't watching every game anymore anyways, so I won't notice that much.

It'll be all NFL offseason and draft talk 24/7 after the next few days until the NHL and these other sports come back, which will be nauseating even for NFL fans.

This is actually kind of good for the Devils because it will lead to a much lower cap next year than expected. Can maybe poach some cap casualties for cheap in trades.

I think there's going to be some form of 'adjustment' to the cap both sides agree on as a one-year patch cause it doesn't really serve either's interests to have a lower cap.

Lots of questions to ask:

-Do players still eventually get paid for the rest of this year?
-Will the league make up any regular season games and if so, how many? I feel like they will try to get everyone to a round number like 72 or 74.
-Any chance of a player-wide rollback on salaries next year to account for lost revenue, like in 2005? (This is doubtful and no way players sign up for it if option 1 also happens)

Option 1 will be worth watching for a shortened season. I bet there's a chance the Devils lose money on every game at this point with how cheap tickets are getting. A lower cap can still benefit owners if players like Hall have to sign for less money because there is simply less to go around. But since it's a one-time thing, a one-year adjustment is also likely. Strange times.

Hope y'all and your loved ones are safe.

Unchartered territory here. If this passes after a month (which NHL seems to be planning for) and there's no way to finish the regular season I'd like to see a tournament where the 3 top teams in each division get a bye, and all the remaining teams have a single elimination tournament for their division's wild card. That would mean the Devils make the playoffs!

Yeah this is gonna be a crazy offseason. My understanding though is the cap is based on projections so if they do a full 82 games next year and NHLPA uses full escalator it may not necessarily be lower, but what the players' take home from escrow this season is going to be tiny. In other words the main hit is to HRR in this season, not next.

Lessons Learned, don’t share stadiums with the NBA. Honestly, the regular season is done. Depending on how long this goes on for, the only hope is playoff hockey. Maybe they find a way for 8-10 seeds to do play in games to make it fair.

Hockey is an international sport. Many are players have homes/families in other countries, and they essentially stuck in the US. I can’t help feel bad for the players. It’s such a expansive experience.

Kind of creepy that almost 100 years ago exactly the 1919 Cup Finals were canceled because of the Spanish flu.

I think the crappy 2005 lockout and no season at all due to greed was way worse. At least these were due to an act of nature.

XFL season looks like it will be officially suspended soon too...

That would also mean that Nas is retained by Ownership should the Devils get in.

You really want that? :whatever:

Thats what I thought also. The cap numbers is an estimate of the revenue for that year. This year their estimate is going to be way off so it should be a mess now, not next year.

1. technically yes. But the players are guaranteed as a whole 50% of the revenue, no more, no less. So those remaining checks may end up going fully into escrow until the books can be balanced.
2. Depends on how long the suspension is.
3. See point 1. A “rollback,” no because there is already agreed upon split of the revenues with escrow withholding to ensure the revenues are split 50-50. As for the cap my guess they will go with a cap off of projected revenues. However if there is if they can’t make up the 50-50 split of this years revenues through escrow then I believe per CBA the cap gets adjusted next year to adjust for that fact.

Expected but the AEW show at Prudential is canceled as well...

No AEW Blood N Guts War Games...I’m not surprised :(

If the regular season winds up being done, do the Devils finish 6th worst? I know we are tied with Buffalo, who has more ROW. If the NHL goes by winning percentage, will this change anything? I had a strong inclination last night would be it after the NBA cancelled its season. I was rooting for Anaheim to get two points against St Louis and leapfrog the Devils in the process but it was not to be. Let’s hope a team that places 7th or worse does not win a lottery ball. That will ensure the Devils land one of Stutzle/Drysdale/Rossi/Holtz

Chicago may have wound up passing Arizona (and possibly Montreal) but just ran out of time. Conversely, if this is it, Arizona didn’t squeak past teams like the Rangers, Panthers, Wild or Canucks. The 10th pick still has to be viewed as a huge win considering where the Coyotes were in the standings at the time of the Hall trade.

Of course this is all trivial in the grand scheme of things here. Just thought I’d post to talk something hockey related and get my mind off this crisis.

Take care and be safe, everyone!!
