Grundstrom wasn't in the organization when they signed him, Luff was an undrafted free agent who had 12 whole goals in the AHL the year before, there was no teaching phase, and the dark cloud wasn't there yet. Luff and Grundstrom are 22 and almost 22. Both RFA's this year, so if they don't play, maybe you can keep them cheaper. Even if Kovalchuk is bought out in June, Luff and Grundstrom will be 23 and 22 at the start of next year. It's going to be ok. It sucks that IK is wasting a spot, they never should've signed him, but it's going to be ok. At least those two are playing in Ontario. For a team that has a good record so far.

That's the entire point - Kovalchuk was signed when Blake thought his team was still a contender. The argument against that was thst they were clearly not and that a 3 year deal was ridiculous because the club had no choice but to invest in it's future and reduce the amount of retirement contracts, not add to them. It didn't matter what the kid's names were, because there were going to be kids needing that space to develop. A year and a quarter later, and here we are.

It worked out exactly like those who opposed the signing said it would.

I don’t think that’s accurate.

It’s not, like saying Kovalchuk would take ice time away from players who weren’t here or were unknown to anyone.

Might as well also call the Jeff Carter trade from 2012 an awful deal as well since he’s stopped trying and caring.

He completely gave up on a lot of those goals against Chicago and made direct turnovers that resulted in goals. And he’s blocking prospects from playing on a garbage team!

I am not advocating the signing, but Dude, let's at least be fair . The Kings were a 98 point team the season before. They lost 4 close games to the eventual conference champ and the powerplay and a sniper were their most pressing needs.
Once again, I am not saying that IK was the guy but had Blake done nothing there would be a flood of posts about how last season could have been avoided had he signed a guy like Kovalchuk in the offseason

When Kurtis MacDermid has more goals than Adrian Kempe and Blake Lizotte...one that is getting buku PP minutes and the other is centering line 2....you've got problems...and that's not addressing the bigger problems, for that matter.

yup I was very critical of the signing as it i was going down and right afterwards however I least understood the thought process on it.

I remember I was at a wedding and this was my process:
Twitter: LA is signing Kovalchuk
Me: Hopefully it is not for more than 2 years (I was concerned about expansion draft, not an issue but was not sure)
Twitter: 3 year deal
Me: hopefully it is below $6M
Twitter: $6.25M
Me: Christ hopefully does not include a NMC (Again I was worried about the draft)
Twitter: NMC
Me: Well lets get drunk

Line Rushes this morning:

Grunny-Kopi-Carts
Iafallo-Kempe-Brown
Cliffy-Lizotte-Wags-Lewis
Porky-Amadio-Kovi-Toff

Interesting setup honestly. I like the idea of a Porky-Amadio-Kovalchuk line and it's nice to see Grunny being thrown right on the top line with Kopitar. Pretty excited to see how it shakes out on Wednesday.

In retrospect, while I was annoyed at some of the personnel choices through the first 12 games of the season, TMac can certainly say “I gave you every opportunity. Now you have to earn it.” I’m excited to see what changes are coming down the wire.

For real though, who do we think sits? Prokhorkin, Amadio, or Wagner, or does one of Toffoli, Lewis, or Kovalchuk sit?

Pick two, really.

Can I pick more?

Personally I would sit Kovy and Wagner, but all that means is it's not going to happen. I could see Wagner and Porky though, outside shot to Lewis.

I still think A. Kempe will bounce back. We know he has some offensive skill and he’s not hiding, he’s still shooting, he’s still trying to make plays. His issue is confidence and he will snap out of it... some of the others however. He does need a look on the wing though.

Carter has really disappointed me, I though he showed a few good signs a few games ago but some of the mental lapses he has made the last couple of games are unforgivable. It looks to me like he’s given up and I’d scratch him. I’ve really tried to back him, but I’m done (not that he will care... lol).

Our blue line is just a disaster. It’s basically DD and a bunch of other guys fighting to establish themselves into 5/6/7 roles. Walker has some upside and MacD has done himself proud, past that it’s ugly. Martinez has gone backward when he needed to be a stabilising influence and we are in the horrible position of needing Forbort back to improve the blue line. Hutton has been better than we thought but he still shouldn’t be more than a #5 on a decent team.

I’d be protecting most of the kids at this point and leaving them in Ontario.

No, its dead on. You lack foresight here, same as Kings management at the time. The window closed at the end of the 2015 season, and the Kings had the choice of doubling down on the chase or rebuilding. Lombardi chose poorly and it cost him his job.

Blake came in, then tripled down on those mistakes by bringing in Phaneuf, Kovalchuk and only luckily failed at bringing in Pacioretty as well. His only future building was the signing of collegiate free agents instead of stripping the team down to bring in much needed draft picks.

I and others argued that Blake's hiring was the perfect opportunity to move Carter, Quick and Muzzin while they still had valuable years under contract. He missed out on 2 out 3, and only dealt Muzzin after his initial plan blew.up in his face.

The only reasonable plan was to go the youth route and avoid bringing in older guys who wanted to live in LA. He had to buy out Phanuef just for that reason, and is stuck with Kovalchuk for the time being.

None of this is monday morning quarterbacking. It was explained in.detail in real time, just that some folks are more interested in taking futile risks than properly building an organization.

I’m puzzled as to how Grundstrom is in the rotation. Isn’t Kovalchuk supposed to be preventing the Kings from doing that?
So you missed the part about needing to get Grundstrom some games because he wasn't playing? Not surprising.

What a load of bullshit. What draft picks did the Kings miss out on bringing in because of “short sightedness”?

I’ve been asking for a rebuild for years. Blake never dealt a draft pick or prospect for a quick fix. Lombardi did that for years and set the team up for future failure post 2014 Cup.

You’re just making up a bunch of things and getting facts wrong, but keep on venting if it makes you feel better.

You are really reaching with the Phaneuf part bro. It's not like Lombardi traded younger assets or draft picks for him.

Interesting top line for sure. First time we have seen Brown and Kopitar apart I think
