My question is why was he a candidate in the first place? I know they pick 3 goalies, but surely there are better options, not currently in the playoffs, than Darling.

Hopefully Darling has a good showing and we can trade him to an idiot, like Edmonton

Of course, there are other US goalies, but you have to want to go. I'm sure Bishop, Miller, and etc. didn't want to attend to prevent injury. Darling wanted go to hopefully regain some form in a game setting.

In the most “of course he is” moment of the WC so far, Derek Ryan was centering Johnny Gaudreau last night.

All jokes aside and putting aside my view on them as Carolina Hurricanes, you have to feel good for Ryan. A lot of guys would have given up on a hockey career and he goes that long, circuitous route to even reach the NHL and now gets to represent his country.

Same for Darling.

I’m just now putting 2 and 2 together with Ryan being an American. It took like 2 weeks after he was named to the US for me to have that realization. I just assumed that WHL to Canadian college hockey meant he was from Western Canada.

Austin Levi is even weirder in this respect. Born in Ohio, moves to Michigan then plays in the OHL there for Plymouth, plays pro for both Florida and Stockton (ECHL), also has a stint in Charlotte (AHL), retires from pro hockey, then goes to play Canadian college hockey at University of Prince Edward Island (QMJHL territory).

When he goes onto become MVP of some obscure European league after university then finds his way back to the Hurricanes in the NHL, what a story that will be.

Of course Darling will look good. There's no real pressure, and it's less challenging. We won't be lucky enough to have him be traded. Darling traded, and getting the #2 pick? That's just lunacy.
