It's a B tournament as well by your standards since the best U20 players are not there. Before the vast majority of them was in the tournament, now with 31 nhl teams and even Euro players starting in the NHL at 18-19 it's really not what it once was.

One thing that is sorely missed is the contrast in playing styles, now pretty much every teams play the same brand of not very exciting hockey...

Yeah, so what.

as with the WHC....................doesnt mean people cannot value it a lot just because it isnt a total best on best.

How many will become NHL players from the gold medal team?
Likely as many as will from the silver medal winning team I would wager.

but it doesnt matter even if they dont...................they won, thats what matters today.

Most of the players playing yesterday wont have NHL careers, this will probably be the apex of their hockey lives.

Please stop with this medal nonsense, who cares. He should have played better that's what matters the most...
Agreed. Sweden should be the ones to worry if poor character is limiting their success (and this want even the worst example).

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I now see how annoying Canadians can be when we win this tournament. Not so much on here as on social media. And I blame this solely on TSN. I'm beating a dead horse, but they make this tournament out be more than it really is. Yeah, winning gold is great, but it's a U20 tournament. You don't see other countries celebrating like we do when they win U20 tournaments in other sports. New Zealand in rugby would be a good comparison.

Still, it's a Christmastime tradition, so it's not like I'm going to boycott it. I just don't get nearly as hyped up for it like I did 10 years ago.

I dont agree. Sweden and Finland go wild in recent years when they have won. However, Canada more than any other complain when they are missing players.

This was in particular clear in 2014 when Canadians complained that they lost so early because the did not have MacKinnon or Monahan. You did not hear anything from Finland missing Puljujärvi or Laine, whom would have been the best players in the tournament by an insanely wide margin.

I did, they werent exactly complaining but they were comments of the type.............can you imagine if we had so and so at this tournament. There was plenty of that.

None of this matters anyway, what matters is who won.

Jesus, its over, you lost, move on. There is always next year.

It was so good I'm watching the repeat broadcast with a couple of pops while waiting for dinner quests to arrive..the final Christmas thingy and then tomorrow it's off to the airport and back to work on Monday. Fantastic Christmas highlighted by the U20s.

I'd guess 5-10 become NHL regulars, that might be pessimistic. If I had to bet I'd say there will be more NHL points from the Swedish team. NHL games is a closer call. I'll be happy to follow all of them, though worried there might be some "Marchand" in a few of the Swedes that I'll find hard to like.

5-10 is not pessemistic, actually very high considering the average. Usually only 2-3 become real NHL studs, maybe a couple more have decent careers and then half or more of the team never really make it.

Won't respond to the underlying bitterness in your post but to an extent you are right.

I'd take a different angle.

NHL players won't touch the conference trophies. We've had the Russians skate off before an anthem. We've had Canadian fans boo the USA anthem and vice versa. Canadian fans, players and managers have all chirped when on the losing end of the officiating.

Tossing a medal or putting it in your pocket wouldn't be in the book of sportsmanship but let's not pretend it's unique to this player/country.

We are men. When we lose, we pout. That's what we do.
I think you are wrong on one point, tossing the medal and putting it in your pocket are two very different things. When I say Anderson take it off his neck right away I thought it was kinda of interesting but not really a big deal. Then he tossed he into the stands my first thought was "He is going to regret doing that one day". No it was not the peak of sportsmanship but I think one day he'll realize that was very foolish as it is the kind of thing he'd probably appreciate more and more as time goes on, especially if he does not go on to have a great NHL career or come back to win gold next year and/or never get to win a Gold for Sweden at any other international tournament.

Yes that's the one. I meant at 1-1 penalties. After this non-call Sweden had 5 straight. And I'll repeat I don't use this as an excuse just stating the obvious that the refereeing was bizarre. I'm Canadian and I had a bet on Canada, still you don't like to see that.
Ohh, you track a game by the penalty count? Interesting. I can agree that was the worst non-call of the game if you don't count the irrelevant (to the outcome) slash by Gustafsson at the end.

Anyway, sorry you couldn't enjoy what was by any sane standard a great game.

That was at their home olympics. Like Canada Cups for Canada and yesterday. Although it should be noted if I remember correctly in 2002 it was actually American referees. All 6 Sweden penalties yesterday were the correct calls but Canada for sure should have had at least 3 of them. Especially the holding in the 1st. That being said, the game was very average overall and to be honest neither team really deserved to win!

Someone's going to have to explain to me why Czech, Fin and Slovak officials are going to favour Canadians over Swedes. That's the only way it would be like a "home Olympics".

I'm not going to rip on Andersson for tossing his medal into the crowd, I get the competitiveness as well as the disappointment/frustration. However, I don't think he deserved to get the medal back.

I'd say 5 tops. Other than Makar and Hart I dont see them becoming star players (top 4D, top 6F, or starting goalies) in the Canadian team. I guess Steel and Kyrou could top out as second liners in their best years. Players like Thomas could potentially make a living as a third/fourth liner and PK specialist, but that is so hard to project. Sweden has a lot more players with "star potential", but at the same time players like Nylander will never be able to make a career as a third/fourth liner if he cant develop into a top forward.

Because the unbiased Canadian (with the Russian pseudonym) thinks so? Purely a coincidence than he wants to dump on a tournament that had an incredibly lackluster performance by Russia.

I can see that. Silver is an accomplishment. And something I'd bet no one on this board ever had the chance to compete for ;)

I think they got it back for him didn't they?

Ohh, you track a game by the penalty count? Interesting.

Got to give him a break.

Did you know that we threatened a boycott in our now famous '72 Summit Series when the brass felt they weren't getting a fair shake from the German ref?

Or you must recall the fervour over the USA-Canada women's Olympic final with the USA official?

When the score goes against you, Refs and penalty situations are the first targets. Check out a post game thread for any team after any loss ;)

Does anyone have GIF’S of all these dives Dahlin is referring too. I must’ve been really smashed because I don’t recall any blatant dives.
