The first goal completely took us out from the game. It had a big effect on the players, that was clear to see. I'm still pissed, but oh well... it's only the first game. In 2014 we didn't start well either, but ended up winning the whole thing.
no matter how controversial it was, a 1-0 lead 5 minutes in shouldn't be enough to make a team quit

First time poster, long time lurker.

Overall, I think Canada deserved to win: less mistakes, more structure.

My personal problem is that when reffing is like this, it destroys the whole game for me, no matter how it ends. First goal, penalties going only one way... I feel I was robbed from a game between two of the better ice-hockey countries.

Regarding the first goal, I haven't checked the rule-book myself, but from what people seem to have pasted (which they claim is IIHF rule-book), it definitively sounds that the call went wrong.
If that goal doesn't count, I bet the Finnish captains very mature rage-penalty (and following goal) wouldn't have happened and we'd be at 0-0. But that's speculation, who knows. This game might have ended 5-0 for Canada for that matter.

Otherwise from 2nd and 3rd period I saw rather even hockey, entertaining at times and better capitalization by the Canadians.

Finns always need a small wake-up, I hope this was it.

I don't think the first goal should have counted. I can understand how that would both rattle the Finnish team and posters. I also think the refs were trying to balance that the entire game with some really soft penalties. I don't think there was conclusive evidence of the puck crossing the line, and the play with the glove was legal based on the rules as they're outlined; the decision to not allow it was the correct one in my opinion.

I think both teams played as expected for the first game of the tournament. Definitely some sloppy and disorganized moments. I don't in any way think this game is a true reflection of the potential of either team.

Cheers to the fans and posters on both sides that didn't let their emotions get the best of them. Also, to the moderators who did their best to somewhat clean the thread up.

On to the next game.

Both teams played really well today. Two of the best teams in the tourney for sure.

Either of them would have steamrolled any of the teams that played earlier.

this over hyping canadiens is fun to watch when in fact they know Finland is gonna beat them later on :DDD

That first goal killed whole game. Canada took after that momentum and game was basicly over after second goal. Canada was better team? Yes. Maybe... result could be really different without that freaking goal.

It should not be a penalty shot because he didn't close hand on it. I'm sure the goal will be posted soon by someone who recorded it. TSN showed it.

Agreed on the first part

And for people arguing about camera angles, the only angle that matters is the overhead angle and that showed the puck not crossing the line.

I don’t see how blaming the refs is a productive assessment of the game. It’s a consequence of the game that’s out of the teams’ hands, I’d rather just focus on how the players played ice hockey. Finland wasn’t horrible, but they clearly got the small ice cold shock treatment from an incredibly fast team who are all used to playing in that type of rink. Finland won’t learn from scrimmages, they’ll learn from these games.

Many glimpses of promise, Finland isn’t out yet.

The Finnish fans on this board over-hyped this team like I've never seen an over-hyping n my life. Tolvanen was invisible. Who knew he was a little shrimp?

Yeah you can't see it from overhead. The crossbar obstructs the view. You can see it from an angle from the front where the puck is on it's side fully over the line.

Overhead is not the only one they look at. I remember a world championship final decided on a forward angle. I think it was against Sweden and might have been Canada who won. It was looked at for 15 minutes in OT.

Neither team played great, although Canada had the clear edge in play. The Canadian forwards did a nice job of attacking off the rush, but I thought the execution could have been better at times. The defence played well with the puck but were far from great without it.

Finland looked pretty dispassionate and ho hum. Not sure they have the determination or Laine-like swagger to win the tournament.
