What Makes a Prospect?​

A player will be considered a prospect until he meets the following criteria:

If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.

An NCAA player who signs his first contract at or above the age of 22 has three years to meet the above criteria (65/45), while those NCAA players that turn pro under the age of 22 will be subjected to the criteria above.

European players who sign their first NHL contract at or above the age of 22 have three seasons from the time they sign that contract to meet the above criteria. Those European players below the age of 22 that have signed a NHL contract will be subjected to the criteria in section one.

NOTE: These are general guidelines and should be followed the majority of the time but certain players may still be listed as prospects if circumstances warrant.

We hold his rights for 4 years because he was younger than 20 when drafted out of Europe, unlike Virta in 2017 who was 20 so it was only 2 years (until he moved to the KHL, extending his rights indefinitely. It's a weird system, but this is what the CBA states:

A player's rights aged 18 or 19 when drafted will last 4 years
A player's rihts aged 20 or older when drafted will last 2 years

That is all it says about it. I can't find anything in the CBA about the situation Virta is in now. Maybe we can find a player with a similar trajectory in the past few years to compare.

What bugs me, is that there's still no word on Virta's rights. He went from KHL to SHL which would mean his rights go back to the limit of 2 years, but I wonder if it will be extended by a year due to him being in the KHL this season. I guess we are 6 months away from finding out and clarifying this very confusing bit of the CBA

At the beginning of the 2016/2017 season, Tarmo was considered a low end first round pick. He had a freak spine injury, IIRC, that limited his play to only 11 games that year. He showed promise last season, but TPS had a stocked defense core. He's proving he's better now with Lukko. Very happy to see him prevailing!!

You got the years wrong but the rest right, at the start of his draft season (15/16) he was seen as equal or even ahead of Juolevi, then he lost almost that entire season to an injury.

Also, TPS defense while good wasn't stacked, they just handled Reunanen poorly imo.

I don't think I ever did find out what the injury was that caused him to drop; I think the majority of speculation here was that it was a concussion.

Since returning from injury, Pajuniemi has 1-2-3 in 5 games and is +2. This is good, considering he had 1 goal and 1 assist in his first 15 games. And the TOI is hovering around 13:00-14:00 minutes, which is better than it was for him.

I don't know this for certain but I assume he's getting more of an opportunity with Kaapo Kakko at WJC camp. Honestly is Kakko wasn't on TPS, I think there's a chance Pajuniemi could be there himself (injury aside).

Yeah not sure about the past couple games, but the first 6 he was their 1C. This after being the 4C and getting demoted to a lower league with White Tigers.

I remember he was thought to have a lot of upside but really struggled to find icetime these past several years. I was ready to write him off...

If the Rangers could sign him but leave him overseas for another year I feel like that might be best. Let him establish himself this year and follow that up with another good year before coming over.

Well, the Rangers have to sign him before June 1st, 2020. I don't think that'll be a worry by then.
